Over here in brittyland, we get alot of out TV from our cousin's across the pond. And there seems to be a few things they portay American High Schools as which are abit odd to me. Anyone help me with which of these are true or not about american high schools?

1. People on sports teams always wear their "Letterman" jackets?
2. Cheerleaders always wear their outfits?
3. Social groups are very defined? (like where i am, it all really mixes together, lines of social groups blurr, is it like that over in US?)
4. People get away with alot?
5. Alot of fights?

If anyone can clear these up for me that would be appriciated.

1. No, not usually.

2. Again, no not usually unless they have practice that day.

3. Yes and no, there are definitely 'cliques' but it's not like they're micro-gangs or anything. Thing do blur across the social strata, but you do see some divisions with like the emos and nerds.

4. Not where I went to school at, oh hell no.

5. Depends if you're in a school in a violent area or not. Personally I only HEARD of one fight all my years of high-school.

As a Brit, it took me a while to get it.

not really.

but anyway

1: These are jackets that are awarded to students who participate in sports, if you earn your school's letter (in my case, a B), it signifies a certain "rank" of play. In US schools, that typically means Varsity-the highest level in high school sports.

2: Only the day of games, and even then usually only their shirts. SOMETIMES they'll wear the whole outfit but, again, only the day of games (unless it's a big game on the weekend, then they'll wear them on the Friday before).

3: True, again, usually. Nerds hang with nerds, jocks with jocks, art kids, et al.

4: Depends on the school. I went to Catholic School first, so i got away with NOTHING. When I went to High School, I could get away with not attending classes or doing homework. (Granted, I could be punished, but once I was 18, and technically an adult, they couldn't do anything to me.)

5: Depends on the school, really.

1. No
2. I wish that happened when I was still in school
3. Not that I could tell.
4. At school, depends on how smart you are, I sold drugs for 2 and a half years on school grounds and never got caught.
5. Where I went, kinda. Most of them were the standard pussy fights where there is a bunch of shoving and shit talking and not much else. Then you had the actual violent kids who would beat the shit out of people. I remember a friend of mine chasing a kid through the school following his blood trail, it was pretty funny.

I'm going to base my answers off of my old high school which I am no longer a part of. Nor am I a part of the American Educational System.

1. Yes they do and they look fucking retarded
2. For the most part or they're in their team's shirts/jackets. Its because they want to be defined as "sporty" or "preppy" and they dress accordingly all the time with no varying styles. Like this [http://www.kublermdk.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/4popped-collars.png] dumbass.
3. Sort of. Its really just the socially accepted and the outcasts then occasionally there's the third group of nobodies. Not outcasts or popular in any way.
4. Yes. If you're on the football team, you can do whatever the fuck you want. A kid walked in to school stoned one day but because he's captain of the football team, he got away with it.
5. Yes and no. Sometimes there are, sometimes there's not. It just depends on the school.

Hope I helped.

Well, if the movies do not reflect the highschools as they really are in the US. How are they?

Odd enough as it is, I find we students here in Canada get in alot of fights. Seems like there is a major one every other week, and my school isn't even one of the bad ones......

Pretty much anybody can do this in my school and no one seems to care unless they're acting like an idiot. And as far as the letterman jackets go only our hockey team has them, and we only wear them to games because they kinda look silly.

Not sure about that stuff. I went to a charter school, but I was pretty involved in the high school nonetheless, and every time I went over there it was just drug deals and baby making. I'm perfectly happy with my homeschooling: my high school freaking sucked.

Real American High School is probably pretty much like going to school in England. Except that we define public and private schools differently (but thats of little importance to this discussion). There are certain social groups, people who have similar interests hang out together. If you live in a rich area you go to a nicer school or a private school and have a lot more advantages in going to college etc. If you live in a poor area you probably get screwed and go to a shitty school with really bad educational standards and not very many opportunities for college etc. If you live in these areas there are probably more fights etc. But as all teenagers are prone to being emotional tensions get a bit high anywhere you go to school. As far as the whole letterman jacket thing from before in bigger cities a lot of times thats really old fashion and people rarely wear them (you see a few around). At my high school each team tended to have its own type of jackets/hoodies/sweatshirts/t-shirts etc. Everyone wanted to be a lacrosse player because we had the bad-ass jackets (I might be exaggerating this a bit but they are sweet jackets). It wasn't like TV where you could look at a kid and say yep he's a jock or he's a nerd. but everyone did have pretty controlled social groups. Mostly had to do with personality and where you lived and what classes you took together. Idk what else I can really say about it. High school is school. You go to class and they teach you shit, and sometimes you learn it and sometimes you don't care. The end.

Well, based on the OP's generalizations, it's a highly exaggerated portrayal of high school. It is exaggerated to help add entertainment value and so they can actually relate it to the plot.

I was in marching band, but there were football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball players who were also in concert band. A few of my friends were in the National Honor Society and Rotary club despite being in football; they weren't the stereotypical burly-dumb meat head. I was in graphic design and studio art, but I wasn't a goth, gay, or wear a beret.

I was given a letter for music and academics. I wore that letter jacket proudly because I worked hard to earn it, much to the distaste of the few athletes whom which actually did fit the stereotype.
