Most American remakes of UK TV shows have been absolutely awful. The only decent remake I've seen is 'The Office: An American Workplace.

Most European to American film remakes were awful too. The worst offenders were 'Breathless'(A bout de Souffle), Vanilla Sky (Open your eyes)and the remake of 'The Ring'.

I thought the departed was pretty good though :D

The departed is quite a good Amercian remake. and Vanilla sky was an ok movie.
but I love Original films and I would not want movies like Brotherhood of the wolves or Vidoq be remade by americans.

This seems an awful lot like one of those flame-bait threads. I'd say bump it back to "Remakes" in general, because honestly, saying Americans are ruining television [http://www.mtv.com/] is only accurate for certain things, because it's not just American ruination of British television, but also remakes ruining originals [http://www.moviefone.com/insidemovies/2007/07/26/worst-movie-remakes/] in general, not just British-to-American alternatives.

I dunno, am I wrong to be a little offended by this?
...Well...to be honest, I can't think of any other country that has done remakes of other country's shows... I'm not saying that there aren't.. just that I can't think of any.
Ugly Betty was a remake of a Columbian show, and that wasn't too bad.
But America does have a tendency to remake british comedy shows (The Office, for example) since the network execs don't think America will "get" the originals. Which is ridiculous thinking, but there you go.

i mean the list of british shows the american has copied is endless, whats the matter they have no imagination?
We can't really complain on that...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._television_series_remade_for_the_British_market

Although...American remakes do tend to completely miss the idea of what made the originals funny. Look at Red Dwarf(US), The IT Crowd(US), Life on Mars(US) (With Colm Meany as Gene Hunt(!)).
Fun House? Blockbusters? My life is a lie...
I'm not sure some on that list count though, since reality show formats are universal, and make sense that each country has its own version (like Pop/American/Australian/Hyperborean Idol, and Big Brother *shudder*)

Colm Meany as Gene Hunt though? Ack.

Mostly the US ones remade in the UK aren't sitcoms - though the Golden Girls as The Brighton Belles sounds like one of the worst things in the world.

The Office is fine, Steve Carell pulls it off.

Maybe we Brits are happy watching American crap. I've got another one for the US to the UK - Curb Your Enthusiasm was lovingly ripped off by Jack Dee's Lead Balloon.

Can't we be happy watching each other's television? Why do shows that have barely finished syndication need to be remade? It's not like Spaced is chocca with Cockney Rhyming Slang.

Tyres might need subtitles though.
