American Ultra - Stoner Comedy with 420 Seconds of Action

American Ultra doesn't lack for a creative premise, but it does have too few laughs and relatively poor action, stopping it from being a worthwhile theatrical watch.

Am I the only one who thinks that Adventureland is a terrible film. I like Jessie Eisenberg well enough, but him and Kristen Stewart don't really do it for me.

Good Review, but I'm not sure if it's going to be the film for me

In other words, this could have been a great DTD movie instead of a semi-good movie to see in theaters... At least it sounds better than Hitman: Agent 47, if you're one of those that chooses one movie out of the ones that came out on the same weekend...

Other than that, I'm not in a hurry to see this movie at home, anyway... Besides, those commercial spots came two weeks too late to get my metaphorical hype...

"Bottom Line: A distraction movie, American
Ultra is a movie to watch when you don't want to
think too hard and need to kill a couple of
hours."

I'm almost certain you could save yourself some time if you abbreviate that description down to; "A stoner movie." ;)

Good review; though, for me, all it seemed to be saying was "go watch Pineapple Express instead". Which I'm cool with because of what little of it I remember I think I enjoyed it. I think. Huh. They really don't stick in the head.

Wait, wait, wait...so this is supposed to be Kristen Stewart as a stoner? Wasn't everyone high as fuck in Twilight? I thought that was supposed to be a stoner movie, what with all the blank 1,000 Yard Stares and the spacing out for a few moments every now and then. And wasn't there something in there about everyone mass hallucinating the most horrendously rendered fake-baby ever?

"One of the strengths of Eisenberg as an actor is his energy and the lightning-quick speed at which he can coherently deliver lines"

The description you just gave makes me think that Jesse would be perfect in an Edgar Wright movie.

That was the first thing that popped in to my head. All she /does/ is sit there staring off into the middle distance and let out forced sighs. Seriously, why the fuck does she get work? She's an absolutely fucking awful actor. Not even that, at least a bad actor would invoke some sort of emotion. Stewart just sucks it all in, making you feel as apathetic as she looks. She's not exactly that hot either, so there's no Hollywood sex points either. I don't know what shes doing to get work, shes so apathetic I can't even imagine her doing anything dodgy.

Captcha: Partial derivative. Yes, well captcha, I concur.

At first thought I considered casting Stewart to be a terrible mistake given her publicly cringe-worthy acting in any serious role. Then I saw that this wasn't a serious role and it made better sense. This is the kind of b-level movie that Stewart belongs in. A very natural stoner. It's not glamorous but at least I don't hate her in it.

But hey, at least she's not as bad of an actor as Harry Potter was earlier on and did have her own laurels to rest on by the time her big role came. I just think she was terrible in it. But that could have been directing and writing. Who knows, I just want to forget it.
