I was okay with killing off Eddie and the kid (jesus it's been awhile since I've read them), I could stomach King writing himself into the story, I could put up with the deus ex machina (more than enough to make the ancient Greek plays blush) But rebooting the story? No, I'm not okay with a story I've invested around 5,000 pages into to just stop in mid senta

But Ka is a wheel. You should've figured out what was gonna happen.

I had a friend semi spoil it for me; didn't tell me exactly what happened, just that it annoyed him. It still pissed me off.

Well, you can't say King didn't warn you. He spent an entire chapter trying to convince you to just put the book down and be done with it.

Have you read the Dirk Gently series? It's actually better than the Hitchhikers series. Seriously. This is from a fan of the Hitchhikers series, too. Also, the best book he ever wrote is also the hardest to find. It's called Last Chance to See.

...That's what happens in those books? I was thinking about starting to read the whole saga (I know the basic plots but not much else) but if that's the outcome, I'm starting to reconsider. I only liked Jarlaxle, Artemis and Kimmuriel anyway but I did want to know about the whole world....

I'll try to say this without spoiling too much. If those three are your favorite characters, then you should read the saga. The Neverwinter books don't hold the end for them(so far).

EDIT: While the endings of of both The Ghost King and Gauntlgrym saddened me, I think they were a good choice. After all, Drizzt is an Elf, so he would of outlived all his friends eventually. Now he can start a new adventure with Dahlia. Plus, Jarlaxle is still alive, and he makes everything better.

Broken Angels was a betrayal of everything that made the first book great. It's not just "different," he might as well have renamed the returning character(s), because HE DOESN'T ACT REMOTELY like the same guy. He IS NOT the same guy.

It's a bigger tonal shift than following Anakin Skywalker from A New Hope to The Clone Wars.

Catherine and Peter in "The Fountainhead"?

YES. Okay, not that I consider this a 'betrayal' of any sort, but goddamn that was some brutal character 'development'. I know Peter Keating is Rand's epitome of weakness, but as a fairly weak person myself I found his whole story to be truly heart wrenching. Sometimes I imagine that, some time after the events of The Fountainhead, he finally found happiness.

Catherine never did, though. She was Toohey's most complete victim. That scene where Toohey first sees Catherine... the second time I read the book, holy crap, in context of what I knew was coming after, possibly the most devastating moment in the book. Which is my favourite book ever, btw.

But my point is, Rowling only did it because she wanted publicity, and she implying that Dumbledore didn't like Harry like a son (which is how I interpreted it) but he liked to hang around Harry because he's gay. Again, I'm not trying to be homophobic, but I remember her saying something along the lines of "That's why Dumbledore cares about Harry so much." I mean WTF?

As far as SOIAF goes, it's spelled out pretty clearly by several characters that when playing the game of thrones, only the cutthroat will survive, let alone triumph. Nice guys finish last and all that. Most people root for the more heroic archetypes and they just don't have the moral flexibility needed to survive in a world as brutal as the one GRRM has created.

I'm fairly certain David Eddings was trolling all of his fans with The Dreamers.
The first three books in the series were bad enough, with crappy characterisation and dialogue, and with most of the actions taken by the characters rendered completely pointless by the end of each book, but the last book was by far the worst.

they kill the bad guy (a kind of bug-overmind thing) and one of the gods realises that everything that happened could have been avoided if the bug had been destroyed years ago. So he goes back in time, kills the bug, and everything that took place over the course of the four-book series is erased (except for the death of a god, but no one liked her anyway).

It was just... wow. It was such a terrible series, one that I forced myself to read only out of loyalty to the author, and I thought that it couldn't get any worse... but amazingly, it did.

I absolutely adore Stephen King, but I always found myself a bit baffled at the last two Dark Tower books. I still like them okay, don't get me wrong, but they just went in sort of a weird and unexpected direction.

Considering how I followed the Series of Unfortunate Events very closely... very, VERY closely (I figured out who Beatrice was around book nine), I couldn't help but think "That's it?" when The End rolled around. It was pretty unsatisfying. Other then that, I don't feel betrayed by authors much.

Yes, because the author of one of the most popular book series of the century, who's final book had just come out and who's movie franchise was still ongoing, definitely needed some extra publicity, eh? And I doubt that you knew that it wasn't her implication, or you wouldn't have used it as an argument.

Nah, don't dread it, embrace the pain for it will make you stronger. The books really are good, and they just get better (with the exception of A Feast for Crows which can get a little tedious at times). I actually loved the fact that GRRM isn't afraid to kill a main character its very refreashing when you look at the rest of the fantasy genre.

This is very true. I'm already into A Clash of Kings and I'm really liking it. But when they first killed off Ned I was flipping shit! And two of my friends who've already read the series kept mocking me while I was going nuts lol
