An FPS even I could enjoy.

So here's the deal. First off, I only own a ps3. Yes I know, most of you are cringing as you read this. Get over it.
I've never been a fan of the FPS genre. Mostly because I suck at them. Although, the more I watch my roommate play them, the more I realize how cool they actually look, and the stories actually seem quite compelling.
My question to you Escapists. What would be a good beginner FPS game for someone who is practically retarded (me) when it comes to playing them?
I've already given Kill Zone a shot. I wasn't digging it too much. I'm willing to give a war setting a shot, but I'm leaning towards a more fictional setting. ie Bioshock and games like that. Any help would be appreciated.

Orange Box for PS3.

It has HL2, which is easy on the right settings, and it's cheap to boot.

29, let's go!

If its story you're after Bioshock, and i also believe that the orange box made it out on PS3 so I'd give HL2 and its episodes a go, although I don't know of their quality compared to the PC version.

I concur. Bioshock is fantastic, and I bought the Orange Box this past weekend. A lot of fun. Highly recommend it.

Check out the first Bioshock and if you like it ALOT (and I mean a lot) then play the sequel, though you'll be in for a disappointment in the story department.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Your roommate probably has it, and it's great for beginners. It was my first real online FPS. Being on easier levels doesn't water down the experience at all either.

3 BioShock recommendations... ewwww. I just couldn't get into BioShock.

I'm just gonna say the Timesplitters games.

Is Metro on PS3?

If you want multiplayer try a Call of Duty game, Black Ops or 4 are the most balanced ones overall.
Modern Warfare 2 can be fun at times but overall its garbage compared to those two.

As for singleplayer go for Bioshock, or if its on PS3 Metro 2033.

Half-Life 2 and Bioshock immediatly come to mind. A personal favorite of mine, though, is Far Cry 2. It's a little difficult to get into, but I loved almost everything about the game.

Unfortunately, Metro 2033 isn't on PS3.

I share your pain, brother. I recommend that you drown your sorrows in Bioshock (no pun intended).

I'm not sure they've made a ps3 port of the timesplitters games, which is a shame because Timesplitters 2 is probably the only game I've ever rented out more than once. Here's to number 4.

OP: I'd say Bioshock if you're more into story, however if you're just starting out with fps and you're looking for quality and variety then you can't go wrong with the orange box.

Resistance is a good one IMO. Very cool and unique weaponry and great story. As long as you can handle a bit of gore and horror.

What about kill zone 2? it's alot better than killzone.
Killing floor's quite fun, especially with this christmas event.
Failing that I quite enjoy playing resistance 2 online, and the single player campaign's not bad either.

If you're just looking for fun gameplay that's easy to get into, won't be too bothered by a minimal story, and the PS3 in question is backwards compatible, go with this. Timesplitters may not have been the first FPS I ever played, but if it had been, it would have been a heck of a gateway drug. It's very simple to get into, and a blast to play. Timesplitters is also a little bit different from modern shooters in that it was actually a true console shooter, as opposed to the modern PC shooter/console shooter hybrids that came out after Halo cornered the market. It's a different experience, and one that really suits console play in a way that more modern offerings don't. As for the story, I've heard that 2 and 3 actually have a decent and humorous story, but I only ever played the first one, which was basically a party game that Free Radical did nothing but hone the gameplay to perfection on.

If Timesplitters is not an option, The Orange Box contains several excellent games, and you could do much worse than Halflife 2 or Portal for a first FPS. However, the console versions of The Orange Box are gimped in general compared to the PC versions, what with all the free DLC that never made it console side, and there are supposedly major framerate issues with the PS3 version in particular. I've only played the PC versions of the games in that collection, so I can't comment on either console version first hand. My guess is that it's not as bad as the rumors say, simply because, in my experience, it's never that bad; if you decide to get it, you might want to do a little research first to make sure it's actually a good idea.

Another series that might be worth a shot is the F.E.A.R. series. Again, the PS3 version is supposedly the worst port, but I've played the original F.E.A.R. on the PC, and the demo of Fear 2 on both the PC and the 360, and I can definitely recommend it on both accounts, as long as you don't mind a game that's creepy and has quite a few points where something scary jumps out at you.

Bioshock is a great game and it's not really a FPS like COD and stuff.

If you want to try out online FPS gaming, MAG is by far the best FPS this gen. You don't have to be a good shooter to play well and help your team win as you can be a medic or a repair guy. All these FPSs nowadays have moving spawns, 1 button grenade tossing, health regen, etc. MAG is a throwback and it's what FPSs should be. And, MAG prioritizes teamwork unlike COD where you just stay AWAY from your team to stay where the other team spawns to get your kill streak rewards or you camp like a *****. In MAG, if you are camping or being a lone wolf, you are NOT helping your team and you are not rewarded for having high KDRs, you are rewarded by helping with the objective.
