An MMO for the 3DS?

After some contemplation I can't help but raise the question; why doesn't this exist?

From a hardware viewpoint there isn't any limitation, as only recently a WoW-copy has been released onto tablet computers. Also it would be practical given that the 3DS requires a nigh constant wifi internet connection.

From a gamer standpoint I could get behind it. One of my main problems with MMOs, MMORPGs in particular, is that they seem to want every moment of your life from then on. The only MMO that hasn't seemed to feel this way was Guild Wars, mostly because I wasn't paying any monthly fees. To have one I can just pick out and play for an hour or an entire day without sitting at the computer would appeal to me.

Plus, what is one disadvantage of the DS that could work as a plus? Graphics. Many MMOs seem to substritute depth for graphical fidelity, and given hardware limitations this temptation could be removed on a handheld system. Yes I have seen how gorgeous some of the new 3DS games look, but thinking back on DS titles of the past I'd much rather see aesthetics of that kind in a massively playable world.

Of course this is merely daydream, but is it a dream worth having?

Haha, alright, then perhaps I should change that to "Why is it not under serious consideration?"

Besides, no reason it wouldn't also work on a standard DS, is there?

The lack of a normal keyboard makes communication difficult.

Hm, I am not so sure, maybe the NGP? I think that dual analog stick could really help in making an MMO. Not trying to hate on the 3DS, just saying.

The Touch screen though on the 3DS could be used for invetory and stats, etc, but I think it would be still sort of clunky for the controls unless they found a really good way to implement it. Then again, it doesn't have to be a 3D mmo, maybe a 2D side-scroller (ie Maple Story) or 2D top down. Then again that top down can also go for 3D Games.

True, but wouldn't it be possible with the digital touch keys on the screen? Like how one inputs names for their characters. Can't be any more difficult than how that 'Chaos' game for the tablets uses its inputs I would think.

But yes, that would be a hamper.

Didnt the DS classic come with its own microphone?
Comms wouldnt be impossible just cluttered.

I dont see why they couldnt do it, personally I would like to see an MMO version of Fallout / Oblivion / Dragon Age but it seems that console MMORPGS or even persistant world MMORPFS' are a mere dream for the MMO nerd who wants to see their Xbox / PS3 serve as more than a system to run a number of cléched repetitive shooters and single player rpgs.

Dream on my friends... dream on...

EDIT:

Wanna add to this thought.
There was a FF game on the Ds Classic, something to do with crystals, I own it just aint played it in ages, it came with "3D" Axis and so on and real time combat. No reason they couldnt just make a wi fi enabled mmo version of it.

That and they could use my idea for console mmorpgs. You use menus to find parties for X or trading X then when in a team you use voice chat to communicate with your team, no different from how you might play a regular game on XBL or PSN.

Well, they could use a pop up keyboard on the touch screen, like on an iphone

I dunno. I would worry a lot about the graphics and the amount of people on one screen. Are we talking about Maple Story fashion? World of Warcraft? Guild Wars? How much detail and info could the limited space of the 3DS take up? This along with a lack of keyboard (or the touch screen keyboard someone mentioned but that could get clunky as well) what would be the speed of this?

so many questions. I would like to see something like this happen at some point though, I would find it most interesting.

PSP had Phantasy Star Online, to put a MMO on a handheld you just need isolated areas so they aren't trying to process to many characters. They work differently than PC's but theres ways around it. It be more limited but we've seen it done.

Eh maybe I have a different view then. Whenever I think of MMO, or at least ones that I enjoy I find there to be lots of characters and events going on around me. I don't enjoy the extreme limitation when dealing with others whom are playing with me. Course Ive also not played Phantasy Star Online so I might be way off anyways.

Would you imagine the amount of hand cramp you would get from playing it all the time? Also you would also be recharging the battery quite often. Well I would like to see it for the 3DS but as far as I concern I would made due with just a Phantasy Star Zero 2 (PSO for the DS). Hopefully the sequel to that game should be miles better then the first one.

Cus the 3DS ain't out yet....

That's like asking in 2002, "WHY ISN'T THERE AN FPS ON THE PS3?!?!".
Pretty much this. Also, I feel like an MMO hand held would be a bit....awkward to play.
