An over-saturation?

So, this could have been brought up a lot in these forums, but do you think that there is an over-saturation of FPS and TPS in the gaming market nowadays?
I mean, I can see why millions buy them each year - they're easy to get the hang of and are accessible, and generally funner in many cases.
But what really annoys me is when the truly fantastic games like X get pushed aside by the constant rehash of Y.

Anyone else agree? Or am I just a rambling retard? Or both.
YOU DECIDE.

Gaming goes through phases. Remember in the 90's, when every game was a platformer with a green plains level, a desert level, a winter level, a minecart level and a volcano level? How about the 80's, when every game in the arcade was a game where you pick one of four heroes and walk to the right, beating up dudes and eating turkeys that you found underneath garbage cans?

Right now, shooters are the big thing. Eventually, we'll move on to something else.

I suppose you're right about that. But the question is - what's the next big thing?
I really hope we get some adventure games in. Like Grim Fandango. But, obviously. That game is impossible to beat.

I would love to see a resurgence of classic adventure games like Grim Fandango. With the power that modern consoles are swinging around, they could be really mind blowing.

I was just watching a video about something like this.... I think the problem is that game companies have to come up with a new idea and nail it on the first try, ala World of Goo, in order for that niche to become successful.

Borderlands is trying to carve out a 'Role Playing Shooter' niche for itself, while new creative fronts like Epic Mickey are starting to come to the forefront. going out into uncharted gaming territory is a risk / reward system, and most publishers won't take the risk unless the cost is small, which in turn lowers the overall quality of the title and it suffers as a result, fails to catch an audience, etc. It's a paradox.

I wouldn't really call it an over-saturation. The FPS is a very versatile genre, there's much to be drawn from and it makes for a very intense experience.

I'd quite like to see DOOM remade with cutting edge graphics and full metal band music, but otherwise remain exactly the same gameplay wise.
I'd buy that shit in a heartbeat.

Borderlands is trying to carve out a 'Role Playing Shooter' .
Wasn't FO3 a role playing shooter? Also, elements of rpg's have become parts of the FPS genre over the last 2 years (or more) starting with the perks in COD4.

I certainly agree with this and I hope Tim Schafer is reading. XD

I loved World Of Goo to bits, but I don't see it as 'successful'.
I think that's the problem with developers trying to re-invent the wheel. They try so hard and in the end, it's a brilliant product.
But don't you think that developers and consumers have gotten into a habit of not trying anything new?
As stated before, the 80's and 90's are a copy and paste example of what is happening now. But, what if the cash cows that are Call Of Duty and Halo begin to take over, if you will? Developers will look at an FPS and think of instant cash.

However, everything I just said could be totally smashed by really clever games like World Of Goo and games like LittleBigPlanet (LBP for the Play, Creat, Share) striking inspiration into developers and consumers.

Or I could be overthinking things and taking it too seriously.

Hmmm, I don't know, I think they're very different experiences... I'd say Borderlands is more akin to Halo / Diablo than it is to Fallout 3.... Fallout just felt like Oblivion with guns, so it's more in the RPG camp.

I do agree with this, here.
Fallout 3 fell closer to an RPG than Borderlands. What with Borderlands having the iron-sights and the bazillion-million guns.

Considering World of Goo was WiiWare and not put through a major publisher it was very successful. I think a lot of what's happening now is that games will go with an established formula, be it FPS, TPS, Sandbox, etc... and just try different variations on it. There is still lots of area to be explored, and the major one right now is MMO. MAG is a very ambitious title and there is a lot of talk around bringing the upcoming APB to the 360.

I suppose you're right with that.
And I personally can't wait to test the FULL MAG product out. :D

Should I call it a full-MAG? Anyone? Ammo? Magazines? Anyone? No? Fine.

Yes, while it is true we are a drift in a sea of mediocrity, don't think that every one is silly enough to drowned in it. Most people are smart enough to recognize the gems from the junk and the ones who can't, well why spoil their fun? If playing a disheveled remake of a game makes them happy, then let the monkey have his banana.

As for you, well you seem to be one of the more game savvy consumers I mentioned before. If you want my advice just put on a thicker rain coat and just wait out the flood. Eventually companies will realize that it is more profitable for them to make a small number of good games, that they can then release DLC for. Then to make a lot of crappy games, that after the knowledge gets around no one will ever pick it up, not even from the god forsaken discount bin...OF SHAME! Not to be confused with the regular discount bin or the discount bin from hell :p

I like the idea I just think it screams clusterfuck of epic proportions. Hopefully they can handle it so that it still feels like a huge experience without lag problems or just a whomever jumps into the fray last wins kind of fighting.

Haha. :p

While I agree with the "let the monkey have his banana" theory, it's worth pointing out that the casual gamers make up a larger portion of the gaming sales (well, I think). You know the type I mean - the guy who goes to Gamestation and dribbles at the cover of WET because it has a chick with two guns and sword on it and buys it for full price.
Or perhaps I've been pointing at the wrong thing. Maybe the Wii-Shovelware can be considered worse. Or that definitely IS a quick buck for a shit look.
What it boils down to is profit. And if profanity, mediocrity and plastic bathroom scales is the way forward, then I don't see much hope for the gaming media.
Call me a cynic, but it could be true.
Then again - I could use a thick raincoat, actually.

I played the beta, and if that kind of spirit translates to the full game - it will be extremely fun. Yes, you get the odd CoD spawn that jumps into a fray of 128 machine guns, but then the majority of the gamers play the game... well, 'correctly'.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post - new here and didn't realize the forum would do that.
