sometimes I see it as a challenge.

Take a near impossible boss fight, that I have died sixty times to. Yeah, I'm pissed off. But then I come back later, with the mindset "Oh, its on now!"

If its a genuine challenge, As in "i wonder how i can do this....*tries* *dies* ...ok, Try another tactic..."

However if this goes on for more than 10 minutes i get really annoyed.

As long as it is genuine challenge, like others have said, it's great. If it's bullshit, Ninja Gaiden challenge, then it's just a pain.

Yes. It's unfortunate that Oblivion is such a huge game, as when I come to an area I keep dying at, I just move on to other places to explore instead ofthe main quest.

You wanna talk about hard bosses....holy shit.

(For those that don't know, she is the final boss of the arcade mode in Dead or Alive 4)

Eh, I kind of waver. A challenge, that leads to me getting riled, but not truly angry, at the game, is one I can really get on with. Something where I get more and more frustrated at myself for not being able to grasp it.

When the game is being a dick, and I'm getting more and more frustrated with it than at my own incompetance, is when I start to turn off consoles and go back to playing much better games.

Just like to clarify that I have no problems with challenges, I love playing well designed games with good AI on even the hardest difficulty, to really test myself, what annoys me is when the game just starts faking the difficulty curve up, rather than genuinely testing you.

I think the challenge in Demon's Souls is quite reasonable. Except certain circumstances can lead you to grinding, but beating a boss in that game is relieving and rewarding.

Even though I've only beaten world 1-1 in 6 hours of play.

And the reason I think Ninja Gaiden 2's difficulty is bullshit is mostly because of the horrendous camera.

the actual boss fights are fun enough, but I'm talking about the random cheap shots the game throws out

1: you have a limited stamina bar and enemies don't, if their pattern permitted they could slash and slash and dodge all day.
2: enemies gang up on you wayy too much
3: poison and the other one (the one you get from rats) kills you wayy to fast
4: pressing start doesn't pause, if you run out of healing items in your quick-access menu and have to chage them out, you get raped by bosses and their assortment of minions

thank GOD I rented it, if I bought it, I would be incredibly pissed off.

I really don't think you were getting mad, you were becoming more and more determined with each passing death. Some games can pull you in like that. Whether it be a cruel difficulty spike/curve, or just an all around interesting premise, there are quite a few games out there that I will endure for the sake of seeing more.

Devil May Cry springs to mind, specifically 3. The combat system was so intuitive, and the different styles really made me feel like I was getting better. So yes, while I did die a lot in the first few levels, when I started to get to later levels and utilize everything laid out before me, it became even more fun.

Having beaten Demon's Soul's twice (on my third playthrough before a newer, shinier game caught my eye), I can say that yes, being challenged by a game can not only drive you to play more, but also the reward for victory is all the more meaningful.

I love a good challenge in games. Sadly, it's hard to find genuine difficulty in gaming any more. These days they just make the game harder by giving the AI more health, more damage, and/or the ability to ignore game mechanics to which the player is restrained.

1: Can't argue with this.
2: Try luring them out one by one, if you can. Area attacks/long weapons are quite useful when dealing with a multitude of enemies.
3: It depends on your poison/plague resistance, which I think is based on luck.
4: No pause is due to the online features, but opening up your menu in an area with lots of enemies is a recipe for disaster.

EDIT: Demon's Souls, is, for the most part, legitimately challenging. But it's one of the few very difficult games where the rules remain consistent.

Another example of bullshit difficult is CoD: WaW on Veteran and the AI's ability to regenerate grenades and bullets.
