Animal Crossing: New Leaf Sales Shoot Through Roof

It's got the potential to be one of Nintendo's best summer sellers.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/7738-Animal-Crossing-New-Leaf], Nintendo's 3DS town builder, has turned into one of its biggest summer success stories. Nintendo's sold more than 505,000 physical and digital copies of Tom Nook's crime saga in June alone. Bear in mind, Nintendo sold 3.6 million units of all its 3DS titles in the last six months, which means that, of the 3.6 million figure, one month's worth of Animal Crossing: New Leaf makes up 14% of total 3DS sales overall for the first six months of the year.

It's doing pretty crazy business over at the Nintendo eShop too. More than 20% of Animal Crossing: New Leaf's sales were digital through the eShop, making it the second top eShop seller overall, right behind Fire Emblem Awakening. July numbers aren't known, but are looking pretty good, so Nintendo's confident that New Leaf will be its breakout summer hit. New Leaf is also helping sell 3DS hardware; its exceptional launch, together with the continuing success of Nintendo veterans Donkey Kong Returns 3D and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, helped push hardware sales up 40% over the same June period last year.

So, want some bells? You know you do; everyone does. And I know just the fella to lend you some.

"Animal Crossing: New Leaf Sales Shoot Through Roof" ... Roof wounded, but not life threatening. Plans to sue for compensation and damages from reckless behaviour.

Maybe Tom Nook knows a good lawyer? ^_^

I mean, it's a solid game.
It's paced just right.
You can't blow through it(well you can with consequences to your towns cleanliness) and the animals and easter eggs in it are a blast.

Plus people want a town to "look" a certain way. You can't accomplish that in one week.

Also it's adorable animals.
Who wouldn't want a game with that in it.

Any chance we'd ever see any Animal Crossing games on the PC? I don't have the spare cash to pick up the system but I loved the original (lost now) and would love to play some more.

Nintendo digital games: "Broadens the base" by making them more usable and having an opt-out for super-difficult feature (Fire Emblem). Allows developers to just do the game they want to make. No dudebros on the cover art. Ad campaigns for its day-1 digital. Not set in a world that's 90% brown.

For some reason I hear a money machine running full-tilt.

These kinda games aren't for me, I know the busy-work-reward-formula, MMO's pull it constantly so now I'm HYPER aware of it in games. And a whole game of busy work just isn't my thing.

Good for nintendo though.

I'll say this: it's nice to take a break from ending entire bloodlines of video game characters sometimes.

He knows a good contractor, that's for sure.

It'll cost you, though.

A Nintendo game on a non-Nintendo platform?

Not happening.

Although I'm sure there are a billion clones.

That's what you think. You're single-handedly funding Tom Nook's ethnic cleansing campaign.

Never. Nintendo will only make games for their own systems. The only way you'll see them on a non-nintendo system is via an emulator.

China's good at bootlegging a lot of things.
Animal Crossing, though...eh.
I wanna say that the game itself is a work of love on the team's part. You can see it in how everything's crafted. That's not something you can just clone.

I have a feeling that we're going to see the same thing with the Wii U. Once we start getting games like Pikman 3, Smash and a new Zelda, we'll see some units selling, and then Ubisoft can eat their words.

I for one ended up part of that statistic of hardware sales. Hadn't really thought about a 3DS until Animal Crossin came along, now I own a 3DS, Animal Crossing, Tales of the Abyss, Paper Mario, and soon I shall own Pokemon X/Y.

Good times.

And that's why there will always be a place for Nintendo in gaming.
As a Nintendo fanboy, I couldn't have put it better myself.
This is pretty much why I will only ever own Nintendo consoles and a PC. As Jim Sterling said, a console is really just a shit PC, and Nintendo is unique enough to be exempt from that rule.

OT: One title grabbing a seventh of total bi-annual sales? Damn, that's pretty fucking impressive. Triple AAA studios, go suck it: this is what happens when you don't follow some retarded colour-by-numbers chartlist and put some actual love into your project. Hell, Nintendo may pull out the same IP over and over again, but at least they space it out from console to console for the most part.

Oh, yeah... *raises flamebait shield*

I can't really see it. I think this is the sort of thing people use to justify why they like one particular iteration of things and not another. Personally, here are Facebook games I've found more charming and engrossing, and even those don't really last me that long.

Yeah it seems to be farmville but replacing micro transactions with crushing amounts of guilt so of course it would do well. Personally I hate the idea of a game punishing me for not playing it as it strikes me as fucking obnoxious and inconsiderate so I won't be joining this number of sales.
