So I came across this article [http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=445463>1=28103], and it got me thinking. I'm not even close to a vegan, so I guess I'm not sure why this is any different from the American version of Survivor where they sometimes award the contestants chickens [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor:_Samoa#Episode_4:_.22Hungry_for_a_Win.22] which they can either keep for eggs or butcher. Unfortunately the article doesn't say how they killed the rat, so maybe that's where the cruelty comes in. But my point is, why is it okay to eat some animals and not others? Bear in mind that I have a cat, and although I wouldn't dream of eating him--seriously, even if I was starving, it wouldn't be an option--I don't think it's right to hold it against other cultures who do raise cats and dogs as meat animals, at least as long as it's done as humanely as possible and properly regulated and so on. What do you guys think? Is it right to sue someone for eating a rat, or should it be ignored, especially if it's a one-time thing like this obviously was?
But before anyone brings it up, I'm not interested in discussing the relative merits of veganism vs. omnivorism (is that the right word? I don't even know). That subject gets beat to death every time it comes up. I want to know why it's okay to eat some animals and not others.
