Over the past decade or so there have been a lot of 3D computer animated films, like Toy Story, Shrek, Cars and more recently, Bolt. but, my question to all you Escapists would is, if they took an older 2D animated film, like say the Lion King, Snow White, Alladin etc, and made re-made them with computer generated 3D like the more recent film, would they be as good as they were? or the other way round, would Toy Story be better being 2D animated? would Shrek have been better in 2D? what do you all think, would classics be better in 3D, or is part of their charm in 2D animation?

...Why can't we just have both?

I don't think Toy Story would be Toy Story without being computer animated and the same goes for the others. Sure, theres alot of movies coming out that are computer animated, but thats just how it is. Its much easier to hire some computer animators nowadays and slap together a quick cash-in that all of the kiddies will run out and see. I fail to recall what it was when Disney/any animator had to hand-draw each picture without using stamp cutouts for the animations, but its just like when they stopped doing that...I'm sure people complained, but hey, you'll get over it eventually.

Some things should just be left as they were originally released or displayed. I would never even bother to watch CGI remakes of any old cartoons, and frankly I'm getting sick of CGI itself in the first place.

We do not need more movies about talking animals going on wacky 3D journeys. It was old by the second or third movie like this that saw release in America.

This. I find a certain beauty in 2-D animation that's not there in 3-d stuff.

Art direction is a major part of an any movie, and a massive part of that is whether it's hand-drawn or CG. Not all stories or tellings of stories are suited to all types of animation. Basically, almost every movie is made the way it is for a very specific reason, and to change the rendering medium is to fundamentally change the film.

Its a hit and miss thing with me. I was raised on traditionally animated movies and the "Nine Old Men" are among my personal heroes, hell I learned to draw just by watching them. I guess it really depends on the film. Shrek would've failed as a cel animated feature while Wall.e couldve been.

They should leave classics alone. Knowing Disney, they wouldn't stop with a CG overhaul: they would get new voices, new scripting, extended content. Seriously Disney, leave it the fuck alone.

There are very few people who take the time to animate the traditional way using hand-drawn frames. Hayao Miyazaki's films are amazing, he does animation the traditional way, and I would feel that it would be a travesty to put a film like Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke into CGI.

they sort of already have done that. with some of the 'Disney Classic' DVD releases they add or change some scenes, like with the Lion King they changed the morning report bit and put in that stupid song. whoever had the bright idea of doing that should be shot.

nah they won`t remake the classics into complete CGI but we`ll probably never see another 2D animated flick from a major film company again, because as far as i know 3D is cheaper and does`nt need as many animators and as long as people still keep filling the theaters and they keep saving money it will never stop.

I just hope they don't ruin Astro Boy with that new CGI movie...
How could you possibly ruin something that's already crap?

On-topic: I think that some movies are better in CGI than they are animated, but if they started making 3-D anime I'd probably not watch it.

It's a bit sad that there is not as much 2D Hand Drawn animation anymore.

I was watching some "Nostalgia Critic" Videos on thatguywiththeglasses.com recently, and realized how awesome 2D Animation had become in the early 90ies. Fluid, Fast, yet brilliantly detailed.

CGI Animated Movies can be nice Enough, especially those from Pixar, but most of them are just less charming. Look at Dreamworks Animation. "Prince of Egypt" or "The Road to El Dorado" have far superior looks than, for example, Madagascar has.
(Actually, while most Pixar Movies just have to be CGI, i think "The Incredibles" and, judging from what i've seen, "Up" would be better in traditional 2D Animation)

I preferred the 2D animated movies over the 3D but these days they can't improve on anything that is already a classic. Everything has worked out extremely well so far and it would be pointless remaking any of them!

When I saw posters of Atlantis I really didn't like the art style. But seeing the fluidity of it in motion when I caught it on tv made me fall in love with that movie. There's been a small updraft in 2d animation again in the West that I hope will pull through (Tales of the Black Freighter will be animated, the new Marvel animation studios that put out Dr Strange among other things, those moving narrated comic thingies) .

There's been talk of a new Heavy Metal project but it seems to have sadly fallen by the wayside (not a remake, just a bunch of nutjobs coming together to make a weird animated mishmash again). Would've loved to see what they'd come up with in this day and age.

I'd hate to see already animated movies be re-animated in a different style.
Seems like a pointless effort to me.

On another note:
Where's my Phantom 2040 dvd's?!
