Animated gifs

So, I want to make an animated gif. I have a copy of flash, and GIMP and GAP. I can not figure out how to use any of them for my purposes. I am not computer-savvy, so I would like to just open the video in the program, then turn it into a gif. Basically like Movie Maker. I put the vid in, and a gif pops out. Can you tell me how to do it?

I don't think you use a video, you use a collection of images. Much like drawing them on the edge of pages, one after another, then quickly flipping through them.

Since I don't know how to create a gif, I could be wrong.

Well, a gif that I found that explained how to make animated gifs showed using GAP to open the video, then it took stills of the frames, and made t that way. Unfortunately, I can not figure out how to even open GAP.
