First off, post edited for grammar and spelling.bladeofdarkness said:Don't confuse dual demographic appeal with what I'm talking about
Bugs Bunny?
Batman the Animated Series?
Beavis and Butt-head?
I'm not talking about slapstick comedy stuff, or the stuff thats fun to watch when you are high, or the stuff that has superheroes in it.
I'm talking Death Note, and Monster
I'm talking about stories that are marketed SPECIFICALLY for an adult audience, because it would go over children's heads
And while there HAVE been some improvements in thinking lately (Avatar is a good example)
These improvements are derived from the TV execs looking at how anime is slipping in, and trying to copy it. Sometimes they get the point, often they don't. Usually they dont because they still think of it as either "its for kids, but adults might like it too" (Avatar, Teen Titans) or "its for adults, so we need as much violence and sex as possible" (Heavy Metal FAKK 2, Aeon Flux)
If they can just get it into their heads that you dont HAVE to be all blood & guts about every story in order to make it adult oriented, things might improve. Till then, anime is pretty much the best game in town for that
Secondly, you clearly have not seen some of the stuff you talk about.
Bugs Bunny did war cartoons. And you know what? So did Donald Duck. I can't even show most of the stuff here because of the incredibly offensive (for our time) content.
Batman the Animated Series? Gee, for a kid's show, they sure liked showing people dying and getting injured quite a lot.
And since when, in the 40-odd years MTV has been around, has Beavis and Butt-head been "dual demographic"?
You also tend to miss out on a lot of genuinely good stuff with that kind of thinking (Samurai Jack, the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Invader Zim), and honestly, as a person who prides himself in level-headed-ness, I have to say you're missing out by excluding one group because of the idea that "OMG ANIME IS SO MUCH BETTER ORZ"
I have a crack to make here, but its best if I don't, for fear of being put on prohibition, and for escalating this further into a flame thread.
*tips bowler hat* Good day, sir.
