Anime intro imagery

Disclaimer: I've only ever watched one anime, but I saw this on the daily wh.at and I thought it was funny.

The creator [Derek] said: "It's always amused me the repeated imagery that exists in anime opening credit sequences. This video doesn't cover them all, but it has a lot of the big ones. Interesting thing I learned, if a character is running it's overwhelmingly to the left of the screen."

So what do y'all think?

wow, i spotted my favorite anime, Planetes in the running montage, although the character was running directly at the screen not to the left. I find it interesting to look at all the similar shots these openings use, mostly because they work well in openings visually. I just hope this isn't or doesn't turn into a OMG ANIME SUXX ND IZ ALL TEH SAME!!!11!!!1111 topic. there are way too many of those on the internet. Hovever i do find the video interesting.

I kinda enjoyed the video, and had fun remembering the names of those I could remember!
Don't think every anime has an opening sequence like this, but its amusing none the less

I imagine that there's a lot of psychological marketing malarkey going on here. The opening animation tends to have a nice budget so they try to make it as engaging and compelling as possible to get people to keep watching. Despite the fact that all of these series are made by different people, they're still relying the same "textbook" if you will.

As for the "people running left" thing, I wonder if that's related to the fact that Japanese is a right-to-left language and so their eyes are trained to run that same direction. I'd be rather curious if I (and other right-to-left readers) would be more comfortable with characters running to the right as a result.

Never noticed... Although I have seen plenty of openings that were not similar... seems mostly the mainstream(?) series are the ones that reuse shots...

By the way... I loathe the seagull shot... so very much...
