Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It has giant robots, drills, and a sniper character who has tits the size of pregnant watermelons and wears a swimsuit top and daisy dukes.

How could you go wrong?

OH! Almost forgot. a show called Rurouni Kenshin. Thats awesome! So add that to the list: Rurouni Kenshin
I don't get why Rurouni Kenshin wasn't first on your list. before i get nuked, your list is fine and good, nothing needs replacing or omitting, its just that... how could you forget Rurouni Kenshin??? probably one of the BEST samuri/feudal japan/ass-kicking anime i've ever watched/read.

EDIT: post 600... woot.
I was looking to more adult animes. Thats why i didnt think about it.

Lets see, seeing as a lot of obvious ones got posted here are some obscure titles.

Tower of Duraga: An anime based off of an old game of the same name that was impossible to beat without a strategy guide. The first episode is a full parody of typical RPG story and they heavily reference the game in one episode but other than that it is an excellent anime.

Kurokami: A fighting anime with a liberal use of magic. Characters call their attacks which are usually pretty lavish visually. But it ends up being a great series. The music is also downright epic at times.

Eureka Seven: Not as obscure but probably one of the best mecha animes out there. It focuses on the personal relationships between the characters just as much as the mech fights.

Heroman: A pretty recent anime and so far its really good. Stan lee (the guy who co-created most of the iconic Marvel comics) wrote the story and it has the same production team as Eureka Seven.

Asura cryin: Though short compared to other anime, 26 episodes over 2 seasons, it is really good at quickly drawing you in and making you care about the characters. The beginning seems to be leading towards the usual Harem but dosnt end up going that way.

Other than these i would recommend any of the Gundam series and Code Geass.

Two words, One Piece. If not, the next choice would be Full Metal Alchemist. Good luck on your further anime adventures.

I specialize in comedy animes, so the best ones I can think of are:

1) School Rumble: This puts a clever twist on the "love triangle" plotline. Basically it's 26 episodes of a girl trying to get the attention of a guy she likes, while another guy tries to do the same to said girl. It sounds repetitive, but it's always interesting to see just how badly the characters always screw up. Plus the opening credit sequence is really catchy!

2)Azumanga Daioh: I've seen this anime's influence in every high-school based anime I've seen after it. It follows a group of girls through all three years (remember, this is Japan) of high school. It proves that an anime can hold its own if the characters are solid.

(I admit, I'm a little hesitant to recommend this but here goes).

3) Lucky Star: I'm a little unsure about this one because it's definitely not for everyone. It's pretty slow-paced for a comedy, kind of like The Office (I'm not saying it's as funny as The Office mind you, I'm just saying it follows a similar style). Give it 5 episodes, and if you don't like it by then, skip it.
All are good.
But don't you think they're... a little reference heavy for a new person?
[sup]it's why my list was so small... I stopped myself from posting stuff like Lucky Star and Azumga Daioh.[/sup]
Lucky Star, yeah, School Rumble, a little bit, and I don't think Azumanga was really reference heavy. If there were references, then I missed them! lol.
You're likely right. I've only read School Rumble's manga and I have yet to see Azumanga.
The only reference I caught in the School Rumble anime was a small, but noticeable nod to Initial D.

I'm currently going through Kekkaishi. I've never seen anyone recommend it.

I like it so far. Good story, though you kinda know where it's gonna go.

I can say whole-heartedly that I agree with just about everything that everyone has recommended-
Now after watching a nice amount of serious anime, and if you're comfortable with subtitles, I have to recommend Gintama. It is a funny, funny, hilarious, comedy, with great characters, that occasionally dips into these super serious action arcs. There has never been, nor will there ever be (in my opinion) an anime like it.

Gintoki is a samurai who lives in a future era where it is illegal to carry swords due to aliens essentially taking over the country. He takes in young Shinpachi, a kendo student, and Kagura, a super powerful alien girl, in his Freelance bussiness. The three get into all sorts of incidents by themselves and with a very solid supporting cast.

I can really explain no further. The series is about 202 episodes long, and I actually shed a single tear when it ended. Just one. No anime has made me laugh so hard, or kept me wondering what would happen next in the serious bits. They also constantly spoof classic anime (Dragonballz, etc..) and plenty of adult humor is abound.

Oh man, I don't think anybody has mentioned Saiyuki! That ones awesome. The original, not the crappy filler junk they put afterwards.

That's what makes it brilliant ^.^
I also enjoyed School Days, and also suggest it.
Yes, it's aggravating, but I found it interesting as well, rarely has an anime made me that emotional.

Its best to just pick a genre you like and work your way downwards to the more obscure things. I started out watching Harem animu. Love Hina, Ichigo 100%, stuff like that. Then it always helps to find a small community of helpful people that are always online to help you find the more unique rarer animes. Channels on IRC can be helpful too. Just remember the Internet is dangerous and you will get troll a lot :p

As always I recommend young and up-and-comers try and get through my horribly colored anime list

If you can read everything on there and still keep your vision then you win a cookie.

Watch Berserk, but not the whole series. Read the manga until it flashes back to the main caracter joining a mercenary band as a teenager. Then watch the anime or continue manga. If anime, skip th finale and read from there on in the manga; It goes farther.

Also read Vinland Saga. It's about vikings!

Watch Monster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Darker Than Black, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass(first season rocks, second season... ehhhh...) and Innocent Venus.

1. FLCL: Just... just amazing man. A must watch.
2. Excel Saga: This anime was so randomly cool that it's hard not to watch.
3. One Piece: It can tend to be young minded at times but it's never boring.
4. FMA Brotherhood: Better than the original FMA was.
5. High School of The Dead: This was a little bit perverted but it's overall a good manga.

Those are a few of them.
