Anime... Really!?

I'm not one to ***** about this but I just saw a bit of Anime or manga or whatever and it's horrifying.

Now I grew up with Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon and that was great. The violence but also fun that my country couldn't make because of... well the violence and the fun. Little creatures trying to kill each other and people sending energy balls at things; Awesome.

But that was a long time ago and now looking back on some random anime it's... horrifying.
I mean I stumbled onto one called Devilman and it was just horrendous. People being raped and destroyed, limbs being pulled apart and blood and guts galore.
It's terrible- absolutely terrible. I get the feeling that particular cartoon is some kind of sick fetish cartoon though... nothing that gruesome could be for any other purpose other than 'to be gruelsome'.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge anime fan but I do enjoy it now and again.

I do however think your being a bit unfair to anime as awhole though as not all of them ar as gruesome as Devilman. Try not to think of anime as just one genre as it can be really diverse, it would be very close-minded of you to right off films just because of the Saw series.

Seriously, anime is a fucking medium. Hell, it's a sub-medium of animation really, but my point remains. There's no point asking "do you like anime" because chances are there is one out there that would appeal to anyone.

The first thing you have to learn about anime, if you're going to watch it, is that in Japan, animation is treated as just another medium, and is actually the preferred alternative to live action with anything that would take a large budget to produce. As a result, you get everything from literal children's cartoons to literal pornography. As for what I like about anime, there's some good sci-fi and fantasy coming out of Japan. I'm not an anime fan so much as a sci-fi geek, but there's plenty of stuff out there for me to geek out about.

Anyways back to the topic at hand! Opposed to what many people think, anime is not a genre, and because of that, they have many many different kinds of animation styles, stories and characters. I like certain japanese cartoons because of the storylines I would say. I think when certain japanese animation companies really want to make a good story, they REALLY make a good story(clannad is a good example of this).

However, the "90% of everything is crap" rule still applies here, and you have to sit through tons of bad shonen, herem, and slice of life crap just to get to the good stuff. However, there are gems in every genre, such as One piece for Shonen, Tenchi muyo for herem(look back and watch it people, it technically is a herem), and Clannad for slice of life (there are quite a lot of good slice of life shows though).

So if your interested in japanese animation, just look a bit harder. Its just like every form of entertainment, there will always be crap, no matter how much good there is.

anyways OP it all depends on the age rating doesn't it.

Dragonball was for younger people and Akira was for older people. You just never saw Akira while you were young because, well you weren't supposed to. There has always been gruesome anime out there you just never saw it as a child unless your parents let you watch that kind of stuff.

Akira is an old anime and its pretty fucked up, so is Demon City or something like that.

I like some anime/manga. It has to gave good story and fast pace plot. I don't mind gory stuff either, wait I take that back I love gory anime as long as it has a purpose. I don't really like perverted anime because well...I'd rather watch something funny and action packed.

That's why I like anime myself. There are shows for EVERY age group. There are anime shows geared completely for little kids, and then there are ones that are geared solely for adults. I also like anime because it's not afraid to shy away from the violence and death--although, in a lot of anime death is simply a revolving door that characters pass through often. "We can wish Goku back to life! AGAIN!"

I just get annoyed with the anime cliches! Action happens on screen, flash of main character's face! OMG (CHARACTER) JUST (ACTIONED) (OTHER CHARACTER). Then the whole "I run with the same repeated animation having an internal monologue explaining the situation" or the other "We all stand in one spot explaining the situation." The dramatic flashes from all of the characters. AHH OHH WHAAH WHOO NOOO! I'm an 18 year old man child. I have eyes and I'm not blind. I can also hear and understand. I don't think I need to have everything I see be explained to me. I like anime and I watch a lot of it from time to time, but these are the only things about it that annoy me to no end.

I feel I have grown out of manga/anime because I feel a lot of it is quite immature.

One thing I like a bout Anime still though are the one season stories. They tell a story over 20 something episodes and then its DONE! Not like American television (Live actio nand cartoons) where they try and milk the cow for way to long. Just consider how good Prison Break would have been if they just got away at the end of season 2 and that would have been it?

I take it that anime is close to your heart since you posted just for the sake of trolling; in a bit of a creative way.

PS: The anime I've seen is strange to me; I have seen some fun ones like the aforementioned DBZ and the other cartoons. I don't think it's the actual 'anime' that gets me; I think it's Japanese culture. Extra Credits did a great thing on the difference in cultures where the Western world prefers to 'grab a gun' and asian cultures much prefer to 'grow stronger'. Those words aren't the exact ones of course.

I wasn't angry. I just like swearing. (Seriously, I have this problem a lot. People assume I'm angry, even when I'm talking to them instead of just communicating through text.) I'd just like to clear one thing up. I wasn't trolling. I was expressing my opinion in an unorthodox manner... Or something.
As for the culture thing, that is a fair point but there are some "western" themed animes. Don't ask me to name them, I've got no idea. I've had this conversation with a friend, I forgot her examples.

For what it's worth, I do like some animes. I can't read manga though, or comics. I tend to read the dialogue then kinda forget to focus on the pictures.

Uh-huh... and you've based your judgments of the medium purely on just that one manga? It's like judging the film medium on just watching A Serbian Film...

I didn't like Devilman either, but I still enjoy both manga and anime, because there's a whole gamut of genres, directorial, artistic and tonal styles, a lot of which I enjoy, but then there's a whole load I don't enjoy and consequently avoid.
