I like seeing the big variety here. Not that I think a lot of the variety is
good, but I appreciate the diversity nonetheless.
I strongly second the following recommendations:
Baccano!
Durara!!
Fate/Zero
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
I also second these:
Gurren Lagann
Mirai Nikki
So, if I haven't mentioned it, you can conclude that I either haven't seen it or it sucks.
Or I have seen it but I just thought it wouldn't be a good fit based on your description. In other words, you can't conclude anything.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica. If you have any love of Magical Girl shows, Drama, action series, or just good shit in general, watch it. It's one of the best series in recent memory.
Not sure what a Magical Girl show is, but I'll give it a go. My girlfriend may enjoy it, if nothing else.
I will strongly second the recommendation of PMMM. I will not say anything else about it, and if anyone tries to tell you anything about it, close your eyes and put your fingers in your ears. I went in knowing nothing about it other than its genre and that "no srsly, it's good", and...well, it's hard to overstate how much I liked it. But looking at people talking about it, I've found the more you know about the show beforehand, the less enjoyable it is.
As for my own recommendations separate from that...well, I'll go with the obvious and say: have you seen
Death Note or
Code Geass? Both are
excellent. Code Geass is mecha, but even people who dislike mecha like Code Geass.
As for the "intellectual" stuff...I'm a bad person to ask about that. I have...weird...ideas about what is and isn't intellectual, because I'm a pseudo-intellectual hipster. But if you were to ask me, I'd say
Star Driver, I shouldn't say
Code Geass but I will, and maybe
Bakemonogatari. Oh, and I've only seen the first episode of it, but probably
Kino's Journey as well.
