I just finished watching episode 26. I have to say my interest in the series just plummeted... I guess I'll keep watching just to see how it plays out.Dirand said:

Most interesting Anime series I've ever seen. Asides from that I can't recommend anything that hasn't already been mentioned since I am more of a gamer than an anime fan.
It's worth repeating that you must watch Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Can't believe there's still people that haven't seen those yet.

Some of the most un-cliche anime I know of that haven't been mentioned yet. Some dark, some not.
Instead of Evangelion, watch Dual!: Parallel Trouble Adventure. Boy has visions of giant robots fighting in a parallel dimension, crosses over and becomes the pilot of the best giant robot to ever wear high heels and becomes a central character in the war that's going on. It takes all the elements that were annoying about Evangelion and makes them funny and it's a breezy 14 episodes.
The Legend of Black Heaven: Former rocker Oji has to keep it a secret from his wife and son that he's putting his band, Black Heaven, back together because their unique sound can power the ultimate weapon of a group of humanoid aliens fighting against other evil aliens.
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World, a small group of students and their PE teacher go to another world, gain conditional superpowers, impersonate a missing princess and fight against giant bugs and girl who is a living ultimate weapon. 7 episodes.
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Tylor seems to be an idiot, has God-like luck, joins the space force, gets put in command of a crew of misfits and makes enemies on both sides of a looming intergalactic war between humans and the Raalgon empire. One of the great anime questions: "Is Tylor an idiot, a genius, or just supremely lucky.?"
Wolf's Rain: Wolves are creatures of legend, thought to be extinct, learned to hide themselves by appearing human. Four wolves go on a bloody quest for Paradise with a girl who is a human flower. Gets pretty darn dark near the end.
Vandread, men and women live on different planets and war with each other, three men wind up on an all-female pirate ship and face off against an alien menace harvesting humans for body parts with some of the biggest mechs from the pre-Gurren Lagann anime era. For most of the series the men and women have no idea how to interact and are more often terrified of each other, avoiding most cliche harem pitfalls.
Nerima Daikon Bros., two guys and a girl work a raddish field and dream of singing to crazed fans in their own giant dome. A musical from Nabeshin, watch the dub, it's one of the greatest.

I know it's been mentioned before, but I would recommend Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Sure, it does the whole mecha thing, but it's not really about that, more about the war/rebellion/terrorist organisation stuff. It has it's dark moments, epic battles and some weird ass magical powers (and some stupidly childish comic relief). Not sure if its what your looking for, but it's worth it.

The beach episode is the funniest anime episode I've seen since Full Metal Panic: Fummaffo
If you're tired of the cutesy modern anime look I suggest going old school
Yep old school stuff like Fist of the North Star. No Pansy shit, just ridiculous head exploding karate. True the old show may have sluggish animation but its it still has more charm than most modern anime.
I also reccomend some of the over the top stuff like MAD BULL 34
Make sure to watch the dub, its ridiculously stupid, offensive, & hilarious.

For good anime I would have to say:
Monster - really great character development and a brilliant plot
Shadow Star NaruTaru - This one is DARK but well done. The anime only covers about half the manga so if you like it I would recommend tracking down the manga.
Bokurano: Ours - I have no idea what the anime is like but the manga was good and has a lot of new takes on the normal "Big Robots" gene. Also pretty damn dark.
Oh and of course Higurashi and the new one called Umineko (or "when the seagulls cry") which is done by the same people.

I remember I needed to find some light comedy to watch after having watched Clannad. Choosing one at random from a list of ongoing series, I ended up with the Kiss x sis OVAs...Raven said:

I don't know how Yakuindomo would work for curing post-series blues (I imagine it'd do well though), but Kiss x sis doesn't exactly stop at the innuendo...Raven said:
The weird thing is that I sort of ended up liking Kiss x sis, and even showed it to two female friends of mine; one of which wondered if I had some sort of incest fantasy. Heh. Probably shouldn't have done that.
Kanon didn't really have that much of an effect on me. It was a nice story; touching and all, but after having had my feelings thorougly beaten into submission by Clannad, Kanon just wasn't strong enough to create a similar effect.
I'm gonna go ahead and say Code Geass, Ghost in the shell, Baccano! and Durarara!!

I saw Kanon first at the recommendation of a friend so at the time, Kanon (2006) version, was the epitome of heart crushing misery fest... I think I handled Clannad better as I was expecting it to an extent (especially after story). But in all fairness, Clannad spent 4-5x longer on one girl whereas Kanon had to go through 5 in half the time. Though I'd definately say Tomoyo and Nagisa's story was by far the most heart wrenching...
I still think of Kanon as being pretty darn sad though, I think if it was produced after Clannad, it would have been better. They've (as a studio) really improved with each series. I'm going to check out Air next...
