Yes you are correct, I got a bit out of line. I was more irritated at the reviewer than you when I wrote that. Its the fact that the reviewer didn't point out what WAS good about the show. All he did was say what it wasn't. Even if you dont like a show you should say who it would appeal to, not who it wont.

As for shikabane hime, it is modern in the sense that it takes place in present times. It is an action show in the sense that the main character fights in a sequence of "monster of the week" battles every episode. Its a zombie chick that wields duel ozies and kills other zombies. How is that not an action show.

This is a B quality anime. The world they craft is semi plausible (except the end makes no sense), The plot while not extraordinary at least exists and is enough for the show to coast on and keep it entertaining enough to watch both seasons.

Not every show can be trigun.

I didn't point out the the story works quite well? Because I'm pretty certain I did. Also, I'm pretty certain I had praised its detailed backstories. Those things aside, I found the series as a whole to be lacking, which is why I put the effort in to explaining why I thought it was lacking.

I have to question if you actually completed the series. It only uses the monster of the week formula for part of the first season. Yes, it's action; that doesn't mean it's good action.

Lastly, you call this a "B quality anime", you do realize this was made (at least in part) by Gainax? Gainax is quite well known for top quality work and creating some of the most acclaimed anime around. So what has lead you to call this a "B quality anime"?

"B quality", in terms of media, refers to productions with a low budget. This was created by two major studios. It had a full run on Japanese TV. So again, what lead you to call this a "B quality anime"?

Are you simply calling it "B quality" to justify it not being able to stand against good series? Your comparison to Trigun at the end suggests this was your line of thought. In which case, aren't you conceding the series isn't good?

How are you going to bash someone else's opinion when you can't even get facts right.

My point is that, the show is entertaining to watch. Shows that use "monster of the week" as the main device shouldn't be torn apart to much. When I watch something I take it for what it is, not what it isn't.

I apologize for the confusing with the B rating. I call it B not because its bad, but because thats the level I feel its at. Something like Trigun or Ghost in the shell would be A.

Good but not quite great.

The reviewer covered the action as 'ho hum', which would put it higher than I would. I found all but one of the fights pretty dull. I picked this series up looking for action and got bored.

Just to get a sense of your taste in shows, name some action anime that you did like.

I can name a few off the top of my head that I will end up rematching.
-> Birdy the Mighty
-> Black Blood Brothers
-> Black Lagoon
-> Gundam 00

Black Lagoon's definitely one I'd highly recommend. Haven't seen it in a while, I should go rewatch it.

Series I'd recommend based at least partly on action:
Garden of Sinners
Macross Frontier
Fullmetal Panic
Toaru Majutsu no Index and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun
Ghost in the Shell
Black Magic M-66 (it's a movie, so maybe doesn't count. I'll skip movies from now on)
Ga-Rei: Zero
Cowboy Bebop
Various mecha series like Bokurano, Evangelion (first one. haven't seen the remake yet), some of the Gundam series, and Patlabor, to name a few.

Tons more I just can't think of off the top of my head.

Full metal panic and macros frontier are two of my all time favorites.
Garden of sinners is the movies your talking about right? if so good there as well.

The only two on your list that I havent seen are Toaru Majutsu no index and black magic M-66. (I think I dropped Toaru while it was still airing cause the story was confusing and made no sense).

Yeah, sometimes the smallest thing will make the difference in someone's enjoyment, or not, of a series.

Black Magic M-66 is a pretty old one, and one I watched a long time ago, but it definitely left an impression on me for some pretty good action. Plot (from what I recall) boils down to 'military robot goes haywire in city', and probably has some other stuff layered on top, but it's been forever since I've seen it and all I remember it for was really good action.

Garden of Sinners (a.k.a. Kara no Kyoukai) isn't listed as action, and they're more drama than any other genre/theme, but just one minute of action in the 2hr+ Paradox Spiral is so intense and well-animated, and definitely leaves a lasting impression. It's defintely done by a powerhouse of studios with probably the budget to back up the expense; money well-spent in my opinion.

Railgun is easier to follow than Index, I don't think it's quite as good though. Haven't watched the new Index's though, waiting for it to finish its run so I can marathon them.

Toaru Majutsu no Index does have a problem where it has to cram a lot of character introduction and exposition in alongside the story. Railgun has a 'smoother' flow because it doesn't need to do as much, but suffers from a slight problem of having one of the best story arcs stuffed into Index. I'm still partial to it over Index, since it has the more overt and creative displays of power.


edit - also, if you're looking for more horror/drama with a similar feel to Garden of Sinners, try Denpa Teki na Kanojo.

I saw this whole series and it's not too bad. But at least this show does manage to do something that Stephen King couldn't do, MAKE BALLOONS SEEM LIKE A LEGITIMATE THREAT!! (For more info on this reference, please see Stephen King's IT) Also the backgrounds on some of the main villains is definitely worth it.

Yeah, I completely agree. The balloon girl was pretty sweet. Like I said in the review, the backgrounds were the best part of the series for me.

i just want to say i so hate this anime,not because it is bad but the way the story unfolds, they killed the only one the characters that had the only chance at a happy outcome,that character being "Nozomi Kasuga" also known as the "Breast Goddess" why????? this is anime is more trying to say that people who seek love or happiness should not get it and i dont mean death as that character wanted at the beginning at the end she told the main character "Ouri Kagami" that only reason she wanted to die was to be with him and she also says she does not want to die she wants to live on with him and the only way she could do that is that she dies refering to "Makina Hoshimura" because she was close to him than her because she was dead, the directors should have tried to give this character a better outcome, its just too sad , BUT its all over the anime is done it can not be changed.......!!! Iam really disappointed. the story great but the way it was made its just not acceptable..sorry

Even though I did really enjoy this series and the dub was fairly solid (at least to me), I will say that your review was very well written and fair. You said exactly what you liked and didn't like without being condescending or boring and gave solid evidence. That's really all that we, as readers and fans, need from reviews.

Now, until they explained Ouri's backstory (and very vaguely at that, I might add), I felt that the writing was decent and the plot made sense. After that point, it did kind of go out there a ways and all I could think about was how much the series enjoys the notion of necrophilia a little too much.

Ever see Ga-Rei-Zero? They are both very similar in themes and core elements but it takes a lot of cues from Quenton Tarentino films, and with the exception of some minor comedic elements, tells a much darker and more serious story.
