The Anime is good but I prefer the manga. The anime is better in the fact it has one of the best opening themes ever.

Another Clamp creation that didn't translate well into anime form, like Tsubasa Chronicles. The manga for Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHolic blends together smoothly and has a duplex storyline that builds on each other like a double helix plot but that is almost completely cut out of the anime in favor of random fluff filler. As usual, the art is superb and the episodic story telling worked alright, it just isn't as epic as it's paper back alter-ego.

"That brings us to xxxHolic, CLAMP's new foray into young-adult fantasy. This time, it's about Kimihiro Watanuki, a high-school boy who is plagued by invisible spirits only he can see. One day he happens across the shop of Yûko Ichihara, a woman who immediately contracts him as after-school help, ostensibly as the new houseboy, insisting that such a thing is "inevitable". Soon Watanuki is getting mixed up in Yûko's business, from divinations about the future to freeing people from the dark spirits that threaten to destroy them..."

Isn't that Bleach? I mean, seriously, give or take two words that's Bleach's first three episodes.

CLAMP also did the character designs for Code Geass.

Anyway, this has always vaguely interested me. But there's other CLAMP series I'll probably get around to first.

I really liked xxxHolic. Not a 5 star show or anything, but thoroughly enjoyable. I'm looking forward to season 2 coming to the States.

I think the author of this article made it much too brief. All I read was that xxxHolic follows the same tropes as Yu Yu Hakusho and Bleach but was different, but it didn't really say HOW it was different except for visual style. We need more examples!

Bleach is an endless crappy action anime, xxxHolic is minimal action, but is more intended to make you think deep.

Do you aim for my opinions or something? Seriously, stop filling up mah damn quote box!

Ahem, anyway. That's your opinion. I don't know any women that like Bleach anyway, so go figure.

I go from thread to thread that catches my eye. I did not intentionally respond to YOU. I respond based on the thread and what whoever says when I feel I should respond. I also try to do things "what happens in a thread, stays there" so just because we dont get along in one, doesnt mean we cant get along in others.

My opinion was not very heavily in my response, mostly just the 'crappy' part. Bleach and xxxHolic are really not similar at all, aside from spirits, but thats as plentiful in anime as space marines are in shooters.

Anything by CLAMP has been pretty much watched to death by me and my friends, but this was a good review for anyone who didn't know about CLAMP's work, and about xxxHolic, which I still don't know how to say (X-X-X-Holic, or Triple X Holic? Or something else?).

it's x-x-x-holic. And really... CLAMP's work is so much better in manga form.

It's actually just pronounced "holic." The xxx is silent. It's essentially a placeholder for appropriate prefixes.

It's absolutely nothing like Bleach.

I didn't say it was. I just meant that the bit above pretty much is a stones throw away from Bleach's starting synopsis.

I'm sure this anime is nothing like it though.

It does have some similar themes. But its nothing like bleach after that tiny little beginning, and even that is quite different.

Bleach is from Mars, xxxHolic is from Venus.

As I pointed out in my article, Bleach and xxxHolic have a LOT in common. But I could teach a class comparing the "boy's anime" of Bleach versus the "girl's anime" of xxxHolic.

Bleach glories in ginormous fights where swaths of urban areas are destroyed, and everyone has to put every last bit of energy in the next swing or we'll all DOOOOOOMED. xxxHolic's confrontations are so internalized they're almost not there. Watanaki never defeats his foes by simply bashing them, and often he has to refuse their temptations or to openly empathize with them. In Bleach, evil people turn into grotesque after-life monsters, and they must be hit with swords until they stop. In xxxHolic, weak-willed people slowly fall prey to their own base desires, and they must be ... um ... well, sometimes they're pitied, other times they're offered a second chance and they simply refuse it, sometimes with tragic consequences, sometimes not.

Which is better? That's rather subjective. Bleach is visceral and confrontational, everyone's in your face and all aggressive, and the fight sequences are dramatic and explosive. xxxHolic is thoughtful and circumspect, everyone's all polite and diplomatic, and the fight sequences are so rare and so brief, they pack an extra punch when they do happen. Bleach isn't for people bored by Dragonball-style posturing, screaming, and slashing. xxxHolic isn't for people bored by fashion-plate Barbies who spend so much time talking and not enough time doing.

I actually really liked xxxHolic. It's not a favorite, but it's up there. It's a shame that the anime isn't more like the manga. I would've liked the anime better, for sure.
