I recently taken an interest in anime, and was looking for suggestions. I know this thread has been done a million times already. I am looking for Comedy and/or action anime, with minimal Romantic sideplot.

What are your suggestions?
GINTAMA.
It has some of the best action scenes I've seen in an anime series (although they're few and far between) and the comedy is second to none.
Not a much in the way of romance though to be honest (although the odd bit here and there), but I'd say it's better for it.

Oh, you could also go for Puni Puni Poemi, Battle Angel Alita, and Desert Punk.

I recommend the anime Baccano! why because it's down right epic and everyone that I've talked to said that this is an awesome show there's actually a review of it on this site http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6404-Anime-Review-Baccano

Dunno if it's been said, but if it has it deserves to be said again. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it's pure awesome.

For action I would suggest Darker than Black. I'm watching it again right now. It's just a really great show.
Have to second this - great action series, minimal sideplot, good humour. It's one of my favourites :)

Since you want action / comedy I'd also recommend Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass, Death Note and maybe Gunslinger Girl. Most of those are primarily action, but I'd say try Darker than Black first, then Code Geass.

EDIT: Just thought I should say - alot of action series have humour thrown in as well, but alot of the comedic anime have a huge "romantic" influence. If you want something sans romance, the best ones would probably be Lucky Star and (at least I think) Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei.

As far as romantic comedy goes, my two favourites are Toradora! and the Suzumiya Haruhi series.
Another good one is Ranma 1/2. Toradora! is a bit heavier on the romance than the other two.

If you wanna go more into action, then i'd recommend Full metal Alchemist, Code Geass and Bleach. As they are my favorites. Although bleach goes on for a long time...

Elfen Lied. It tells a good story, and it's not just killing people. although there is a lot of that. A lot. Also if you have a moral stance against nudity or something than just forget i was here

you should totaly watch "EF a tale of memories" and then "EF a tale of melodies" (aka EF season 1 and 2)

the reason i say this is because

1 they are very very good as long as you understand teh whole visual queues and symbolism jobbies from high school.

and

2 because the people who make it (minori) are a bunch of xenophobic dicks who hate every fan that isnt 100% pure blooded japanese and i just want people to pirate as much of their stuff as possible to piss them off.

(and before anyone says anything, YES i AM butthurt by them forcing the cancelation of the EF visual novel translation by NNL!!!)

For comedy I suggest Welcome to the NHK. And for action I would suggest Trigun.

Bleach, One Piece and Death Note are my favorites, so I would suggest you watch them. Full Metal Alchemist is also cool.

You could also try Princess Robot Bubblegum! (kudos to those who get the reference)

Bleach, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop are all great choices, Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are all done by pretty decent English voice actors, watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan is a must, it is an amazing anime. =P

Oh right also forgot the pretty much pure comedy one with action, that one is Soul Eater, it's kind of like Bleach only with a little more childish texture to it lol. =P

Fullmetal Alchemist / Fullmetal Alchemist Brothhood. It fits the requirements pretty well though Brotherhood plays more with the romance (still minimal, just more pronounced) than the Original. Brotherhood is also more violent. Personally I like Brotherhood better but your mileage may very. Also Brotherhood is still going.

Ghost in the Shell is also a really good action Anime. Personally has some of the best action scenes I have seen. Though it's story is fairly complex. I think it's a plus.

Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh are both good comedy / slice of life Animes. Honestly I feel you have to watch them to understand.

Finally Galaxy Angel just because I like it. A pure comedy with little regard for either the forth wall or continuity. Especially apparent in later seasons.

Comedy: There's a law that says I have to recommend Azumanga Daioh. Also, no guarantee you'll like it, but I personally enjoyed Lucky Star after the first 4 episodes. And try Haruhi, though it's not totally comedic.

Action: Maybe not for someone who's recently gotten into anime, but Nanoha, especially the second season A's. The first season doesn't really get good until pretty late, but it's awesome once it's there, and the second season is just awesomeness. The romance is confined to (extremely obvious) lesbian implications between the two leads.

Also, Baccano, Evangelion, Darker Than Black, and FMA (first series, Brotherhood is rushed) are excellent choices. On a somewhat (but not much) more artsy note, try Kino's Journey.

For action with slight romantic sub plot, Yu Yu Hakusho is pretty good and it has lovely action. They use their heads to think how to win. With strategy! Yay!
I beg to differ. I haven't watched it since I was 10, but I remember that Yusuke doesn't have even half a brain.
He still thinks his way out of how to win. Granted that usually boils down to "If I punch it hard enough, it will go go down" but he still puts a little strategy into how to hit his target...

My favorite character in the anime was Kurama anyway. All his battles were wonderful.
