So I was thinking about all the different kinds of anime they have out there and what kinds people might like and what they think of other kinds of anime. So I decided to try a new forum thread.

The idea is simple: you give either a short list of your favorites or a cross-section of the anime you like/love, then the person after you rates what they think of it and then leaves leaves their own list for the next person to rate. If you want to include a short clip or episode or picture to jog people's memories or give them a hint about what the show is about.

Please try to use a universal ratings system, like A/B/C/D/F or X/10 etc.

So here is my list:

Favorites

Sekirei

Ghost in the Shell: SAC/2nd GIG

Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team
[youtube-ubiNqkTMIU

And here is a short list of some of the other anime I watch/own:

Witch Hunter Robin
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Spice and Wolf
Outlaw Star

NOTE: You must remember to rate the above person's list.

I haven't been exposed to a TERRIBLE amount of anime, at least as far as the "big series'" are concerned, so I think at this point it's easiest to narrow it down to what I don't like. I know I don't like animes with an incredible amount of fanservice (Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple), animes that never make any damn sense (Cromartie High School), and animes that are incredibly "freaky" (Beelzebub. Too much baby junk flying around).

I think for me, it's all about the characters. I tend to enjoy the ones with actual character development, characters that are memorable, and characters that break the usual molds. Toradora, Durarara, Gurren Lagaan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Cowboy Bebop, Soul Eater, Welcome to the NHK, Big Windup...they're all VERY different, but I think if I had to choose one reason I like all of them it would be the characters and their growth.

As far as I'm concerned, the only anime worth existing is Cowboy Bebop. I mean, I'm not trying to disparage other anime (though I totally am), but Bebop is just pure motherfucking art, plain and simple. The only others I've seen that I consider objectively good are FLCL, Perfect Blue, Grave of the Fireflies, Baccano, and Monster, with FLCL being the only really great one of the lot. Among the shit I have seen some of, in order of ascending shittiness, are Akira, Samurai Champloo, Neon Genesis Evangelion, GiTS:SAC, Code Geass, and the lowest of the low, K-On. Seriously, there is no other work of fiction I hate more than that **** discharge, and I consider myself the lesser for having been exposed to it. Yes, I'm being dismissive, but after seeing Bebop, it's like, why bother?

Rating of above post: Meh+

- Please refrain from that language on the forum. Thanks! -Cagayake Mod

Haven't seen any of those besides 08th, Eva and Outlaw Star. I would give them an 8, 8, and 9, respectively from what I remember. I haven't seen any of those in a while.

1. Puella Magi Madoka Magika.
2. Star Driver.
3. Elfen Lied.
4. Gurren Lagann.
5. Durarara!!

EDIT: dang it taking long while writing my post it is farther down.

Not knowing how to post clips or pictures, my favorite anime are:

1. Darker Than Black
2. Gantz
3. Fullmetal Alchemist

I like other series, such as Eureka 7, Black Lagoon, Hellsing, Death Note, etc. But those are my absolute top 3 with Darker Than Black coming in at #1.

SPICE AND WOLF IS AWESOME!

*ahem*

Anyway, my top three would be:

1) Spice & Wolf

While this may fall into the fantasy category, it is radically different from what is generally expected of the genre, focusing on economics and trading rather than sword and sorcery. The pseudo-medieval setting fits the storyline quite well, the English dub actually is half decent, and the two main characters have some rather hilarious banter between them, and the chemistry, while tense at time, is believable.

Overall Score: A+

2) El-Hazard: The Magnificent World:

The best way to describe this OVA series in a nutshell would be "Japan meets Wizard of Oz meets Arabian Nights". The story is well crafted, though a bit nonsensical at times, the characters are generally likable (though every loves to hate Jinnai), and the setting, music and theme are all absolutely breathtaking. Avoid the TV anime if you can. Its not as good as the OVA series.

Overall Score A-

3) Neon Genesis: Evangelion:

I shouldn't even have to tell you about this one. Suffice to say, this entire series is a complete and total MINDFUCK.

Overal Score: A

Ok my top 5 is
1. Cardcaptor Sakura score 10\10 it's perfect in every way!
2. Hidamari Sketch 9\10 it's a ultimate slice of life anime (-1 for confusing timeline)
3. Kareshi Kanojo no Jijō "His and Her Circumstances" 9\10 it's my favourite romance series and manga, not even once other romance series even got close to competing with it. (-1 to series for ending, good thing manga continued! it gets 10\10)
4. K-ON! 10\10 just for Mugi-chan
5. Galaxy Angel 10\10 ultimate crazy comedy

i like everyday slice of life, gag-comedy stuff, mahou shoujo, and comedy-romance or just comedy stuff. absolutely hate and not tolerate blood death angst and other dark stuff.

@Macgyvercas (ninja'd) Rating above ~ A. I've seen Spice and Wolf and it's an excellent show, not your normal anime story. I've only heard of NGE, but I've heard excellent things about it. Haven't head of the 2nd but it seems decent.

My list:

1. Mushi-Shi - A story about this dude that goes around helping people that run into trouble with Mushi, these spirit like ethereal things.

2. Darker than Black - Essentially it's a story about people with superpowers called "contractors" and whenever they use their power they have to do some sort of bizarre action to compensate for it.

3. Death Note - Focuses around a student that encounters a notebook which allows for the death of whoever's name is written in it.

I'm way more into the fantasy side of anime, the .hack series, Spice and Wolf, Berserk.

@Macgyvercas: I see you were quick to get here to trumpet Spice and Wolf, and I totally agree on it's awesomeness. I want an apple now. And for them to make a 3rd season, though I'm doubtful.

Elfen Lied was awesome.
Death Note was equally awesome.
Spirited away was 9/10. Cant say anything was wrong with it or anything.
Soul Eater kicked ass at first but it turned boring during ep 30something.
Naruto... I dont like fillers.

Im kind of a mainstream-ish person so please dont judge.

Clannad and Clannad AF(There isnt a rating system that goes high enough)
Darker Than Black(10/10)
Higurashi no naku koro ni(9/10)
Fate/stay night(7/10 but it was damn awesome)
Elfen Lied(10/10 one of the more enjoyable experiences ive had during my life)

For the person above:
Cowboy Bebop: 10/10. I'm rewatching it, and I think I like it better now then before.
Sword of the Stranger: 8/10. It was a great movie.
Afro Samurai: 6/10. Don't remember much, but I guess it didn't leave much of an impression.
FLCL: 10/10. Loved it when I first saw it, and it just keeps getting better each time I watch it.
Genius Party: Have't seen it.

Now for my list:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica- Isn't even a year old yet and I absolutey in love with it. Loved every little thing about it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion- The old series doesn't hold up very well, but overall I just love the franchise, as well as the new movies.
Death Note- This series got me back into anime when I was all but finished with it.
Bakemonogatari- First anime I saw by Studio Shaft. I just love the visual style, dialogue, and characters.
ef- A Tale of Memories- The best romance anime I've ever seen. Everything was done beautifully. I also loved Tales of Melodies, but not as much as Memories.
Steins;Gate- Another anime from this year, which is also now one of my all-time favorites.

EDIT: Damn, ninja'd

Well, whatever...
CLANNAD: 10/10 for both series. One of the few animes that made me cry.
DTB: 8/10. Only seen first couple of episodes, seems pretty good.
Higurashi: 9/10. Still one of my favorite horror series.
Fate/ Stay Night: 5/10. It was meh. I hated the main protagonist. However, I enjoyed the movie and looking forward to Fate/ Zero.
Elfen Lied: 8/10. Loved it when I first saw it, but later noticed it was actually pretty flawed, so I read the manga and loved it.

As for the above:

Death Note: The first anime I watched, a few years before I watched anything else. Quite an excellent anime; High production values, intriguing and suspenseful story, good character dynamics etc. It lose some steam in much of the second half though, and could've stood to be more morally ambiguous in the clash between the different approaches to "justice". But overall a great series with a well deserved popularity. 9/10.

Elfen Lied: Both as nuanced and as powerful as a battleaxe. Subtlety is mostly out the window, replaced with blood and tits; but who doesn't like those, and it still somehow manages to be an engaging and powerful drama nonetheless. 7,5/10.

Mahou Shoujo (Puella Magi) Madoka Magica: Excellent series. It takes a genre I'd normally find inane, and injects Gen Urobuchi into it; the result is quite unique, roughly the equivalent of a psychological breakdown. I originally didn't care much for the ending (which expanded the scope of the series rather dramatically), but having gone back to it, I find it more fitting than I originally did. One of my own clear favourites as well. 9,5/10

Code Geass: Never seen it. ?/10

Hellsing: I found the TV-series rather dull, and it never seemed like much was at stake in the fights (or massacres as one might more accurately refer to most of them). The OVA's are supposed to be significantly better though. 6/10.

As for a few of my own favourites:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Spice & Wolf

Baccano!

Monster

Steins;Gate (now that Puella Magi has already been covered. The game is better though)

Bokurano is something that turned me away from watching Mecha anime for a few months or so. The anime is pretty damn depressing anyway but the manga OAO Even the one that gets saved at the end of the show DIES! YEAH! HER! It's something you don't really forget very easily when it comes to mecha.

Luckily a couple of friends suggested that I watch Star Driver. Thank god for that xD Now robots don't symbolise death to me xD

Opening:
Transformation:

And no, that's not a translation error or joke. Ginga Bishounen does mean Galactic Pretty Boy xD Sorry but I can't find a non-mirrored version of it :( I'd recommend you find the show though. 25 Episodes, all great.
