You're asking me to pick one favourite?
That's not possible, man.

Clannad
Azumanga daioh
Nichijou
Death note
FLCL
Tengen toppa gurren lagann
5 cm per second
Steins; gate
Usagi drop
Grave of the fireflies

In the end, I guess Clannad (after story) wins out. Why? Because it changed me.
That show hurts so good.
You're my new favourite Escapist member. Just putting that out there. Oh Clannad... *wipes tear from eye*

And Steins;Gate is awesome. I just finished it all yesterday.

Imma go with an oldie, that being Neon Genesis Evangeline. Not only a great anime but the producer pulled the worlds biggest troll with the so called real final episode.

I'd have to go with the following:

Code Geass
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
High School of the Dead
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Soul Eater
Gundam 0083
Gundam: 08th MS Team

These are the few shows that I would re-watch in their entirety.

Let me help you with that.

That it is.
I went into it expecting slice of life with time travel as the gimmick (à la Nyaruko with its Lovecraft mythos), but what I got was not only a series with a story, but a good and well executed story. With interesting characters, even.
It's not often you come across those.

Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Azumanga Daioh, and Monster are all excellent animes. (For the record, I'm not even that much of an anime fan, so that says a lot.)

As for anime movies, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Grave of the Fireflies, and Paprika are also worth seeing, especially the first two.

Stay nerdy, my friends.

Alright, i'm not much of an anime geek but people kept recommending a show calles "Revolutionary Girl Utena" and it's movie "Adolescence of Utena" to me because they knew i really dig artsy, surreal stuff. And really... it didn't dissapoint me. It tackles issues like traditional gender role, the objectification of women and the act of growing up in a really clever way, using not only classig fairytale tropes but establishing a very unique artstyle. While the shows tone is not exactly consistent (sometime there's a rather jarring contrast between the serious and the humourous episode) it's still really interesting and clever. It's also pure eyecandy. Especially the movie. Man, the movie was insane.

"Hah! He thinks he'll make me sad just by showing me a random clip?
A funny one, even.
Psh.

I tried dowloading the soundtrack to Clannad and putting it on my cellphone, so I could listen to it while walking to school and stuff.
It was fun when stuff like Hurry starfish played, but suddenly The place where wishes come true II comes on, and that's my day ruined.
I learned from that mistake.
Had to make a playlist with only the happy songs.

My all time favorite(s) is Dragon Ball/Z/GT (I haven't seen Kai yet).
Others I have enjoyed include:
Full Metal Alchemist (Both of them)
Code Geass
El-Hazard (both the OVA and the regular series, although in both cases Makoto is one lucky SOB)
Gunslinger Girl (although every episode tore at my heart strings)
D. Gray Man (at least as much as I was able to see)
Death Note
Claymore
Ghost Hunt
Ga-Rei Zero
Basilisk (although I was saddened by the ending and there were many things I didn't understand)

...and that's all I can think of now.

Hmm... I should do that. It would definitely brighten up my day... and I can do the same thing with the Gurren Lagann soundtrack and walk around all pumped up and throwing my fist into the air.

Anything Gundam, but Zeta Gundam is by and far my favorite series. Zeta continues the story told in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, where space-faring colonists fought to free themselves from being governed by those on earth, led by an aristocratic family called the Zabis, who declared their new nation to be the Principality of Zeon. Seven years later, Zeta Gundam basically takes the opposite approach; the Federation Government's Titans Force rules with an iron fist, killing any and all who oppose them or speak out against them. The Anti-Earth-Union-Group fights against the Titan's oppression.

Zeta has a more heavy emphasis on politics than it's predecessor did, but not as much as Gundam Wing, mostly because a lot of Gundam Wing was talking in circles. Zeta gets around to it's points.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) - best anime ever, so much depth, so many voice actors( holds a record i think), and so much classical music. Never officially translated but the fansubs are pretty good, if you like space opera's at all go see it. As much as i like Crest of the stars it's not even on the same level as this. Also there's a live musical adaptation that they did this last year, now that's something worth getting dressed and going to the theater for.

Special mention to Heroic Age, caught it randomly on netflix. Seemed wonky at first but it turned out to be a good tale, got to the point where the opening credits had tears welling up.

Death Note

Requiem For The Phantom

Strawberry Panic! (don't ask, it's very touching!)

And (arguably) Hellsing.

Also maybe Naruto and Bleach, but lately I've been having second thoughts...

Edit: A shit forgot Ergo Proxy.

Chobits~ One of the most cutest and adorable animes ever. I loved Chii (to the point of cosplaying as her) even though it took her a while to act like an actual person.
You wouldn't happened to be switched on in the same way, would you?! =P

Nodame Cantabile! I will never get sick of that series of quirky characters learning classical orchestra and piano music.
The only issue I take with Nodame is their animation budget. Finish the third series and try rewatching it all you can do is go: WTF is this?!

Still, I love both the manga and the anime of that, and their use and portrayal of music in the anime is brilliant... also watched the J-drama of it... s'OK (acting was great, other than the terrible miming)...

But... the manga is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better... I'd recommend reading the manga over watching the anime of Ouran HS-HC every time...

I am disappoint at your lack of Paranoia Agent, Ergo Proxy and Another... seen them? If not, I'd recommend them seeing you... uh... tastes.

OT: Right, my turn:

Haibane Renmei - y'know, I can't really find the words to express my appreciation for this series, but suffice to say, it is very sagely, whether inadvertent or not. The evolving relationship between Rakka and Reki is one of the best pieces of writing I know of, and the climax to ep12 is close on to heart-rending.

Gunslinger Girl - OK, I'm sort of cheating with this one, I so prefer the manga as the second anime was a bit *meh* and the voice-acting in the first series could be a tad wooden at times. But the concept and the emotional story within it is brilliant. Claes remains my favourite character and rather wish she got more screen time.

Grave of the Fireflies - probably the only film ever that I believe to be a work of pure heart yet I cannot stand watching it... superlatives abound... (the animation of Setsuko's dialogue notwithstanding, but that was understandable...)

Aria (and related series) - fifty-three episodes of almost pure whimsy (and again, I prefer the manga... just). Episodic but good when I'm feeling particularly cynical. Seemingly pointless in its meandering, but sometimes that's what you need and the genuine feel-good from the series without being at all forced is unbeatable.

GitS:SAC - do I really need to justify myself with this choice of series?!

Last Exile - apart from some dodgy mechanical design, I can't really fault this series for anything. Great story, great characters, great side-characters, great progression and great premise. So 'great' all round (pretty much).

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - this is pure 'how tragic will it be' stuff. And tactfully handled, though the kid's voice can be annoying at times, totally worth it.

While i love a lot of different Anime's and it's hard to list them all without either sticking to a theme or the big ones that most of us know. Still, i find it odd that no one's mentioned "Eden of the East" yet. It takes inspiration from the "Bourne identity" with the main character erasing his memory. There's also a "Game" where 12 people try and save japan's government, but these 12 known as the "Selecao" have phones that can do anything they want for them and have 10 billion yen to spend in pursuit of winning the game.

Also, this scene

Oh yes, I've seen Ergo Proxy. Doesn't really rank amongst my favourites though. Might need a rewatch. As for PA, I've been meaning to see that. Thanks, not heard of Another before.
