I'm not going to smack down popular anime with this, as it makes the genre more accessible to the common audiences, which is at least somewhat good. And I'll be the first to admit that I'm not nearly enough of a connoisseur of anime to know the really obscure stuff (especially given that I like dubs, rather than subs). Nonetheless, what are some anime titles you wish had more fans in the mainstream anime fans?
I don't mean things like "I wish everyone could see that Hellsing is a real piece of art", or things like that. Specifically within the anime community, which titles do you think don't get enough love?
Full Metal Panic: It's a brilliant show, funny, well-written, truly compelling, fantastic characters, emotional, all of the things you want in a series, and people still think I really mean "Full Metal Alchemist" when I talk about it. I can go on and on about the awesomeness of this show.
RahXephon: excluding one person I knew in college, most self-avowed anime fans I know have never heard of this show. Imagine, if you will, watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and actually having it make sense. Symbolism that actually fits, religious undertones that aren't scattershot, hints and subtle nods which built to the reveals. An ending that actually leaves the audience with some closure. Go watch it, right now.
D.N Angel: It's a soap-opera, plain and simple, but it's a charming one. Nothing really dramatic or new, and it does leave some loose ends around the edges, but the focus is on the interaction of the characters. All of them are dynamic and have depth. It sounds like a kiddy show, and it has some lighthearted elements, but on the whole it's a fantastic show that hardly anyone's heard of.
Happy Lesson: It's not your common harem show, no matter what the box art might convince you of. It's primarily a romantic comedy, with only one major couple. But, that said, every character gets depth and personality, and fleshed out with regards to motives and psyches. Also, the music is really good
So, what about the rest of you guys and girls?
