Rules are simple:

- Post your most enjoyable, charming or downright good anime that you watched in 2015.
- Say a little something about why you feel the way that you do. (Don't worry, this is a safe place, you're among friends)
- Said anime does NOT have to have premiered in 2015 only. This is all about what struck your fancy this year.
- If necessary, please put any major plot points/plot twists into spoiler tags.

This is how you do a spoiler tag, for example. Quote my post to see the codey-code!

[HEADING=3]Most enjoyable:[/HEADING]

1) Monogatari Series [http://myanimelist.net/anime/5081/Bakemonogatari]:

Everything from Bakemonogatari to the currently airing Owarimonogatari. I realise that I am somewhat late to the party but this was a hell of a marathon!

While the story can be obtuse, needlessly padded and the dialogue can become annoyingly circular with characters you might not like. That said, the sheer focus on character development, growth and the exploration of emotional issues from multiple perspectives is intriguing.

This is a dialogue-heavy series, well, 96% dialogue...but this is complimented with text-based insight into a character's inner thoughts/color-coded flashes of color to represent intensity of emotion and an attention-to-detail regarding body language. Overall, it's a highly contemplative show that uses the idea of supernatural oddities/afflictions as a metaphor for personal issues. A lot is left to interpretation and some character arcs can be hit or miss, but that doesn't detract from it's undeniable style of presentation.

It can get a little stuck up it's own ass, and those that cringe at fanservice might tilt their heads at this one. All in all, probably the most difficult anime to recommend, but it's certainly an experience if you're looking for very light philosophical discussions intertwined with wild mood whiplashes.

2) One-Punch Man: [http://myanimelist.net/anime/30276/One_Punch_Man]
(Currently airing)

Holy shit.
Action. Humour. Affectionate superhero parody. Fluid animation quality. Great soundtrack.

So I'm having a blast with this one! I'll admit, I had never heard of One-Punch Man in any way, shape or form. So when I read the plot synopsis about a bald superhero that takes down enemies in one punch, I raised an eyebrow at how you can possibly make that work. Lo and behold, it works...as a parody! Ohhhh, I was under the initial assumption that it was trying to take itself seriously.

Check it out! The animation is superb, the humour is on point and our protagonist demonstrates simple-minded thinking that borders on unintentional brilliance.

---

3) Hibike! Euphonium [http://myanimelist.net/anime/27989/Hibike!_Euphonium]:

Okay, so this might look like K-On 2.0. But hear me out! This isn't cute girls doing cute things. No no no, this is cute girls working their asses off to hone their skills and filter their musical passion through the efforts of the school's brass band.

No seriously, don't roll your eyes! J-just wait...

The story follows the trials & tribulations of working in a brass band with the intention of making it to Nationals. Tensions rise, drama ensues, in-fighting must be resolved, bonds forged and past mistakes remedied. That said, there are plenty moments of levity, it just retains a grounded stance.

It is an absolute visual treat! It is beautifully animated and those with an appreciation for classical music will find something special here.

[hr]

Enough about my nonsense, I want to hear from you guys & gals! :D

What was your most enjoyable/surprising/decent/fantastic anime that you watched this year?

1) Blue Exorcist [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Exorcist]

[HEADING=3]Plot:[/HEADING] This is stuff you all learn in the first episode, so I don't think it's really all that spoilery...anyways, the plot basically follows a teenager who ends up being the spawn of satan..to give backstory to that, they kinda glanced over it, but satan possessed someone and rapedimpregnated a girl, and he was half human/half demon, but up until that point his powers had been concealed, hence him not knowing about it and just being an extremely strong but normal human. The spell that contains his demon powers weakens enough where he essentially starts seeing demons, and he ends up learning that his foster home (a church)were actually all real exorcists watching over him since he is the son of satan. The plot starts rolling pretty fast after this, and he pretty much wants nothing to do with being a "traditional" demon (bad m'kay?) and decides he wants to be an exorcist and kick the shit out of satan.

[HEADING=3]Characters:[/HEADING]

The main character, rin, has a twin brother (doesn't have demonic powers, rin soaked it all up in the womb basically.) named yukio, and they have very relate-able and funny brotherly love/hate moments all throughout the show. there are lots of other recurring characters throughout the show, but it definitely follows along some of your typical shonen jump material.

[HEADING=3]Anime / Manga:[/HEADING]

haven't read the manga, idk why I just don't like reading manga (but I love anime?...idk.) but I heard it's decently popular in japan. the anime unfortunately only has one season so far (I had only heard of it through netflix, otherwise never seen anyone mention it?)

[HEADING=3]NSFW[/HEADING]

It definitely follows that shonen jump type material where it's a bit pervy, and some of the humor is pervy, so if you are too edgy for that, then you probably won't like some of the humor in the show. For the most part it doesn't concentrate on that though, and none of the female characters are really damsels in distress, almost all of them kickass in their own way. I watched it with subs, and it says some occasional curse words, otherwise it's the typical japanese style humor.

[HEADING=3]Overview:[/HEADING]

If you don't mind shonen jump material, specifically "fairy tail" the anime, then I think you'll like this alot! the action is good, and I really like the in universe lore actually, it does a good job of not throwing it in your face, but it definitely is alot deeper than it gives on sometimes.

[HEADING=3]Anime is an 7 / 10[/HEADING]
[HEADING=3]Manga is an ? / 10[/HEADING]

Happy 16,000 posts for me~
My list will just focus on this year's anime. Otherwise I'll have to include Monster. You know what, go watch Monster [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n86hgIXc1BM], it'll be the best thing that happens to you this year.

Anyway, onward with the list!

Top anime of 2015!

1. One Punch Man.

No explanation needed.

2. Ushio to Tora.

A good ol' series about what things use to be like.
Sure, things had cliches and the such, but the battles, the bro moments, the hint of romance. They all come together with your usual "hero needed" premise. Still, if you found old things like that enjoyable, I'd recommend it.

3. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime.

A romance set in a olden era and fictional land.
Where the main romance is the prince, and the other is a pharmacists.
Yes, I know, this IS a shoujo romance, but I found it to be unlike other shoujo romances. The protagonist carries her nice personality, the same with the prince, and well... basically I found all/most the characters to have their nice little points.

So if you like romance without the harem/school/cliche bullshit, I'd give you this.

4. Noragami Aragoto

The second series of Noragami.
If you liked that, you'll love this. If you're intrigued by the OP, I'd suggest you watch the original first.

5. Kekkai Sensen.

How do I sum this series.
Basically say "what the fuck" followed up by "that's awesome", and you have the series.
It has blood powers, weird eyes, a mystical New York that gets destroyed on a daily basis, what's not to love?!

I can't exactly say much more, but look up the basics, and judge if you like it or not.
For though, in the end, while I did enjoy it, it just doesn't tie things up nicely, especially with the long pause between the second last and last episode...
So basically, I'll say this, "watch Trigun [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSX58TglZRs] (again) unless you like the premise."

The Monogatari series is pretty much my fave anime series ever - I don't feel like Owarimonogatari is quite up to Bakemonogatari standard, but I rewatched the old series just to get in the mood for the new one, so that's always good! :eek:)

No love for Hestia so far?
Is It Wrong To Try and Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon? - Silly, fun, and that blue ribbon that somehow became a meme in it's own right - what's not to love?

My best anime of 2015 so far is probably Charlotte though
I almost gave up on it during the very first episode - it felt completely meh, with a stupid premise, and it only just kept me interested enough to give episode 2 a chance, but in true Key fashion it had me crying like a little girl several times before the end. Little Busters, Angel Beats, Clannad - Key totally knows how to kick me in the feels and I can't help but love them for it.

Honourable mention to Shimoneta: A boring world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn't exist. Predictable, not as funny as it really should have been, and yet I couldn't help but sing along with the S.O.X ... S.O.X ... S.O.X... bit of the theme tune every single episode!

Hibike! Euphonium, eh? Well, it looks like I got something else to watch in December...

OT: This was an anime that I binge-watch with a friend in a single day dubbed because why not...

Prison School
http://cdn.animeherald.com/aniheraldcdn/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Prison-School-Key-Visual-002-20150527.jpg

The new, and only, boys now attending the formal all-girls academy are sent to the school's designated prison, run by the Underground Student Counsel, for basically being caught as "Peeping Toms"... What starts off as just an "ordinary" sentence soon turns into a means of escaping by any means necessary... However, there might be more to the USC than meets the eye...

As someone who has been [slowly] reading the manga beforehand, I kinda knew what to expect from the anime... and the dub did not disappoint, either... The tension isn't just played for laughs as well as the "fanservise" isn't just played for viewer titillation... Plus, I really love the interations with each of the characters, which lead to some of my favorite funny moments in the show... Overall, if you can tolerate through the fanservice and are willing to give these character a shot, then I would recommend both the manga and the anime... with Season 2 of the anime in the works...

Other than that, I still got to finish [re-]watching both Birdy The Mighty: Decode and Michiko & Hachin, which I have been enjoying them both so far...

Gangsta. If you're looking for something that's somewhat mature with action and drama I'd definitely recommend this. Especially you've enjoyed any of the following: Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Jormungand. It's gritty, fun, has well-animated fight scenes, and likable characters with nearly train-wreck fates.

I haven't been watching much of the new anime this year, i've got a backlog to clear. Hey I've nearly finished watching Toradora at long last so I have that going for me. Dunno how i've let that sit on the backburner for so long, the main girl is the most next level tsundere I have ever seen. Watch and learn, Michiru-sama...

I really liked Shimoneta though, that shit was hilarious and here's the obligatory Everyday Life with Monstergirls mention.

Going back to watching Yugioh GX now, it's such trash but so much fun, especially if you've ever played much Yugioh yourself. They all fuckin' SUCK at deck building. Jayden, the fuck are you doing adding Winged Kuriboh into your Elemental Heroes deck?

Have to second One Punch Man, for its parody, the action sequences, the characters. Madhouse does good.

Even later to the party, I marathoned Hajime No Ippo and have been obsessing over it for a couple weeks now. As a premise, boxing feels like pure shounen, but Makunouchi is likeable enough as a protagonist without being a complete pushover that I prefer the anime over others in its genre. The animation for the fights captures a lot of the good moments, especially when the Dempsey Roll hits the screen. What I especially appreciate, though, is how everybody feels like a character. Mashiba is lanky and creepy, Sendo is vicious and wild, Takamura is brash and outspoken (at least he works for his title, though), and Sawamura is...scary. Everyone is fleshed out at least a little bit.

And Gintama's back for another season! Yeah! That's a great comedy show if anybody doesn't know what it is; the humor bounces all over the place with references, scenario gags, and cracks in the fourth wall. I'm so looking forward to winter.

Finally, Food Wars. Almost fetishistically animated food and cooking combined with engaging characters and kitchen trivia made for a great watch and I can't get the end slates out of my head.

I've been enjoying the Anime Expo shorts lately.

I just watched an Eva inspired one, and while the animation was a little spotty, I thought it was interesting. The story was told from the perspective of three friends who were being separated. Two of the girls were moving away, because their families were evacuating the city, leaving one of them alone. They make a promise to see each other again in high school, when the war is over, and a goofy JPOP song plays.
Of course, if you know anything about Eva, then you know this won't end well. The world basically ends in both versions of the story, so all three of the girls will probably die. There is no future for them. At the end of the video the bubbly pink pop song fades out and the girl is curled up, alone, in a black bomb shelter, while explosions can be heard in the background. The entire shelter shakes, and her parents are nowhere to be found. It's not a great work of cinema, but it's nice to see the story from a civilians point of view. You really get a feel for how destructive the combat is for the average civilian, and it hits home for the people who remember how empty the city was by the end of the series.

Oh yeah, When Marnie Was There counts as well. I saw it in theatres, and it seemed like a proper sendoff to Studio Ghibli. Probably my favorite non-miyazaki film.

One Punch Man
Sure the synopis sound like more of a short (yes I read it started off as a short) and the main character himself is kinda a mary sue but by making him unpopular and a simpleton, it work!

Monster Musune
I may liked this due to the fact that I haven't watched a harem show in a while. The main plus point for this anime is really the monster girls as they all have unquie personaility from one another which is also reinforce by their monster traits.

Gundan: Iron Blood Orphan
So far for a Gundam anime, it does it right and refreshing were the past Gundam series has failed ie Gundam AGE and Gundam Reconguista in G. The protagonist is intended to pliot the Gundam and not an accident and is a soldier beforehand with proper training. Best of all the main character doesn't hesistate at all where past protagonist had bad outcome because of their hesistation in the past. The new setting in Mar was interest despite it was shortlived and with the smaller cast/ setting and being a group of mercenary than a actual army work in its favour.

B-B-But; cute girls doing cute things is what I've been enjoying recently... So, yeah: Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka season 2 and Yuru Yuri's third season have been what I've been watching and liking a lot.

Not much to say as to why: they're fun and upbeat. I like the art and sound styles and its pretty relaxing to have something to watch without any action or badassery; just cathartic, light-hearted goodness.

Technically it's from '13, but The Tale of Princess Kaguya was the best anime I saw this year. I wouldn't say the most enjoyable considering the fairy tale it's based on, but it left quite an impact on me.

As for shows... One-Punch Man is the shit. It's that perfect blend; It's funny because it's so epic and vice versa. If you enjoyed The Tick cartoon you'll love this.

Monster Musume was a fun, cheeky distraction for a while. Despite it's unique premise though we all know that like every other harem anime, the plot and relationships will go absolutely nowhere. Also, Cerea hasn't got a chance, like, seriously... Yeah, you know what I'm refering to. >.>

The anime I have watched this year:

Yuri Kuma Arashi
Revolutionary Girl Utena (series)
Fate/Stay Night
Fate Zero
Tsukimonogatari
Hanamonogatari
Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers-
Love Live! School Idol Project (which I am currently watching the first season of)
Owarimonogatari (Which is currently airing)

I feel like there is one I am forgetting, but if I did watch another, clearly it wasn't that good or memorable.

[hr]

[HEADING=3]Most enjoyable in no particular order:[/HEADING]

1) Revolutionary Girl Utena [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary_Girl_Utena]:

This one was recommended by [user]Neuromancer[/user], I believe because of my love of the Puella Magi Madoka series and there being some similarities between the two.

The basic premise is there is a character who called Utena who decided that she wanted to grow up to be a prince after being comforted by one when her parents died. The story takes place when she is in high school and she comes across a student striking a girl in her year. She intervenes and ends up challenging him to a duel, which she wins.

Upon winning she discovers that she has unknowingly taken place in a ritual, the girl she fought for the honour of is now her fiancée whose title is the "Rose Bride". She must now duel against all challengers who would wish to take her away as the one who is left in the end is said to have the power to revolutionise the world.

The series is very difficult to describe, especially without giving away major spoilers. But it is very deep, psychological and also incredibly strange. Not just because of the concept itself, but because in actuality, what happens in the story and what it is actually about are not entirely connected. There is a lot of metaphors at play as well as a lot of things that only start to make sense once you get nearer the end.

The anime is somewhat dated visually and re-uses the same scenes quite a lot, so it can be a hard one to recommend. But for those who want something more than just entertainment from anime should definitely give it a try.

2) Yuri Kuma Arashi [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurikuma_Arashi]:

One of my other favourites is actually made by the same person as the first, but is significantly more recent (this year). It is just as strange, if not more so than Utena, while also being both less subtle (but not in a bad way) and less ambiguous.

The story is set in a world where for some unknown reason, a meteor shower caused all bears on the planet to start attacking humans. A giant wall was built to divide the two and bears are considered enemies of mankind. It follows a young lady whose mother was killed by bears which has caused a burning hatred within her. At the same time she is in love (with another girl, hence the title) which has earned the scorn of her fellow classmates.

Like Utena, the story which takes place and the point/message of the story are related in a less than direct way. The story follows a string of murders of students by bears as well as two bears in human form (I did say it was weird) who are seemingly obsessed with her. The point of the story however, is about the exclusion of people in Japanese society who do not conform to social norms (specifically lesbians) and the strength of love and how it can go above conforming to societies rules.

Unlike Utena it is a lot more visually appealing (although the art style is a little unusual in itself) and also unlike Utena it does have it's fair share of fan service. Admittedly this did make me somewhat wary of the series as I generally try to avoid fan service where possible, but I am glad I tried it anyway as it's easily on of my favourite series in recent years.

3) Owarimonogatari [http://myanimelist.net/anime/31181/Owarimonogatari]:

I suppose I could cheat and specify the "parent" series of Monogotari in general, but I have only seen three of the series parts this year and I think this one is the only part I'd rate highly. I am not sure what I can really say about this series which RipVanTinkle didn't cover in his post. The series itself is divided into lot's of short tales and each tends to focus on a different character or characters.

There's lot's of talking, not much action if at all and the occasional piece of fan service, which I am still uncertain of the reason for, as it seems both pointless, yet oddly fitting with the series itself. It's a very hard show to recommend mostly because of how it is almost pure dialogue and at this point quite long. However, I rate it highly for it's wittiness, insight and quirky style.

[hr]

[HEADING=3]General opinions on the rest:[/HEADING]

Fate/Stay Night - Pretty average. A great concept but very cliché and the human characters (Masters) are very boring compared to the Servants.

Fate Zero - Significantly better in all aspects to it's "sequel" (Zero was made after). It's not the best series ever, but it was enjoyable and Saber is awesome.

Tsukimonogatari - Meh. I like the Monogatari series, but it is based around one of the least interesting characters and all felt pretty pointless.

Hanamonogatari - A little more interesting than the previous one, but aside from being based around one of my favourite characters of the series it was still a bit meh.

Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers- - This could have been amazing, as the original premise made it seem like it would be. Unfortunately they took what should have been a 25 episode series and just did 12 which meant the story never took off and spent 8/12 episodes on a "who-done-it". If the reveal of who "it" was happened to be satisfying it would have been okay, but it turned out to be the most idiotic and contrived result I've ever seen. But it's based off of some books, so presumably it's accurate to those.

Love Live! School Idol Project - I have never seen an "Idol" show before and can't say I am likely to become a massive fan. I watched this because I kept seeing enough fan art to pique my curiosity. It's enjoyable enough, but if you've ever seen a "A group of students join together to stop their school closing by doing X" you get enough of a picture of what the series is like.

Shirobako counts, right? It finished airing this year, at least.

It's about five 20-something women who work in the anime industry, and the incredibly mundane struggles they go through to make sure that the anime they work on come out in time and good quality. It's got amazing characters, plenty of funny moments and some surprisingly touching ones. It's a rare slice of life that doesn't focus on high-schoolers but on adults and their work, filled with optimism and hope and absolutely grounded in reality. The ultimate feel-good anime.

Anime I've watched and actually got into this year;

One Piece
High DxD Born
Gate
Everyday Life With Monster Girls.

[HEADING=1]Best Anime: One Piece[/HEADING]

Since I got into anime and up until early this year. I actually despised One Piece. I thought that any show that was over 600 episodes would be god-awful and filled with fluff. Yes, they're are some filler arcs, which are all awful. But I'm on episode 717 now and no show has ever been as fantastic as this in my opinion. Awesome fight scenes, gives you the feels at least once an arc, and has one of the most likable cast of characters I've seen.

Dear Sistra,
You've done it. At first I was going to simply ignore this thread but noooo... you had to start it didn't you? Now I have to reveal what my favorites for 2015 are. Well you know what? FINE! I WILL!
[HEADING=2][color]GenGen's Top Anime 2015[/color][/HEADING]

1) Monogatari (The Series) - Yes, Sistra you were late to the party but you've caught up on the glory that is the Monogatari series.

The Monogatari Series isn't just my favorite series of 2015, it's probably one of my favorites of all time at the moment. I could tell you what the other ones are but then I'd have to kill you. So what can I tell you about Monogatari that both @RipVanTinkle: and @A Kisslike Smile: haven't covered as far as the series go?

Admittedly it's a rather long series that spans quite a few arcs. The people that I have recommended the series to ~Eyes @Texas Joker 52:~ are down right intimidated by the number of episodes and sub-series. So I'll include a handy dandy order guide to assist those of you who need the help LINK.

Currently airing is Owarimonogatari and a three part movie series for Kizumonogatari has been announced. Trailer? Yes there's a trailer.

[hr][hr]
2) Gate: Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri

If my Avatar wasn't a big enough clue, this anime is another one of my favorites for 2015.

The series starts off with the sudden appearance of a mysterious stone Gate in the middle of the busy Ginza District in Tokyo before it unleashes an army of knights and hordes of mythical monsters. The invading force kills many civilians before they are pushed by by the JSDF. In the aftermath of the assault, an expeditionary force is sent to the area on the other side of the Gate, called the Special Region. The series follows the exploits of the Third Recon Squad lead by Lieutenant Itami Youji.

Despite the premise, the series has a lot of heart. Rather than taking the plot route of the JSDF marching over everything in its path, the story focuses on a more realistic approach. The JSDF render humanitarian aid to the locals who have been under the yoke of the Empire, it establishes relationships with the village leaders and even starts a refugee camp to assist those who require aid.

The characters themselves are memorable as well, from the Otaku and Accidental Leader Itami Youji to the blood thirsty Loli, Rory Mercury, they're quite fun to watch.

Word of warning. For those of you who want to explore more of the Gate-Verse through the manga, there are quite a few more explicit scenes and darker topics.

3) Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

Alright. I'll admit it. This anime made me cry. [small]Please don't take away my man card[/small].

The anime follows the story of Kousei Arima, a child piano prodigy who stopped playing the piano after the death of his beloved mother. Even two years later, he cannot touch the keys of his piano. His world is flat, colorless, ordinary. All that changed one day in April when he met Kaori Miyazono, a carefree and spirited violinist. From that moment on, the direction of his life changed. Recruited to be the backup pianist for Kaori's second recital, Kousei is forced back into the world of music that he has been absent from.

Despite being a tear jerker anime, this series inspired me in so many ways. Being a musician and artist myself, it inspired me to pick up both my instruments and pencils again. The music is excellent and honestly, if you don't love this anime, you're a heartless bastard!!

... I'm running out of steam here so... #TeamChitoge.

Synopsis from MyAnimeList said:
Raku Ichijou is an average high school student. He also happens to be the sole heir to the head of a Yakuza Family called the Shuei-gumi. Ten years ago, Raku made a promise... a secret promise with a girl he met. They promised one another that they will "get married when they reunite." Since then, Raku never let go of the pendant the girl gave him.

Then one day, a beautiful girl named Chitoge Kirisaki transfers into Raku's class. Their chemistry was more than off. There was not a moment where they were not fighting. But by a weird turn of events, Raku and Chitoge agree to become fake lovers. Although his heart is really interested in his classmate Kosaki Onodera, Raku must continue pretending to be Chitoge's boyfriend.
Burn the Harem Haters, I love this series. The series is absolutely fun to watch. From the way that Chitoge and Raku interact to the appearance of Tsugumi. Watching this series brings a smile to my face and makes me laugh. Call me simple but I like what I like.

I haven't really watched a lot this year because things have been crazy busy.
My favourite would probably My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU season 2. It's not as good as the first one, but I enjoyed it as it is paced much better than the books and it doesn't draw out the jokes as much.

I also loved Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers as it is kinda a closed room murder mystery series that keeps you guessing at "Who did it?" (I guessed the right, but after a lot of back and forth).

My third favourite would be Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon which is silly and fun, yet managed to draw me in.

I am currently watching Anti Magic Academy which I also enjoy quite a lot. I like YuruYuri too, but as I have already read the manga it doesn't really do much that I haven't already read which is disappointing because I was overjoyed when I saw a new season was emerging from my Crunchyroll queue.
