I've seen so many people with anime/manga characters as their avatar I didn't realise just how popular it is. I've been into since I was a kid, my first was Akira. I watched so many but it was that long ago I honestly can't remember what they were called. I'm now into Kenshin, Bleach, Naruto (I know, I know), Dragonball (yes, seriously), Ghost in the Shell, Devil May Cry and a film called Dead Leaves (which is bizarre but brilliant).

I've tried a few others like chobits, fruits basket etc but I just find them boring. So... favourites? Recommendations?

I liked Wolf's Rain (Extremely niche, though), and When Cicada's Cry (Extremely graphic and violent), and I suppose Full Metal Alchemist. Death Note, too.

I've seen a little of full metal alchemist, but what I saw I liked. The only thing that put me off death note was the live action film.

Studio Ghibli's filmography is very impressive, but all other anime I watch just seems to grate.

I'm willing to bet at least one person will reply "But you just don't get it..."

My favs are as is

Hellsing Ultimate
FMA: Brotherhood
Cowboy Bebop
K-ON!
Gunslinger Girl
Fooly Cooly
Ghost in the shell

I would recommend any of these, of course it really depends on wht kind of anime you are into seeing as how some of them are totally different.

my personal favorites are:
soul eater (my no.1 and my avatar)
death note
hellsing ultimate (a little violent, but if you can put up with blood, then it's awesome)
the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya

used to really enjoy digimon series 1 and 4 as a kid, not so much now that i've grown up a little, but still good for nostalgia

The anime was good, deep, and clever, aside from the fact that at times Light (the main character) could essentially see into the future.

Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, I My Me Strawberry Eggs, Riding Bean, Great Teacher Onizuka, Fist of The North Star, Key: The Metal Idol, Bubblegum Crisis, Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, pretty much anything from the universal century canon of the Gundam universe...

Plenty of the more "adult" genre as well, assuming you don't mind the naughty bits, are loaded with decent characters and cheesy humor, such as F3, Countdown, The Ogenki Clinic, End of Summer and so on. Then there are the more raunchy titles, such as Bible Black or Cool Devices and such, but that's a bit more than most people generally go for. Still, interesting IMO.

Lotsa good stuff out there, I only advise to not limit your scope based solely on genre or expectation.

you wouldnt know it the way people insult it cause Light's last name is Imagay backwards and thats supposed to be telling of.... something. I never really got it.

Check out Hell Girl. It ramps up with a plot that doesnt make a lot of sense, but its just nice... guilty pleasure material kinda stuff. Or at least has the Oppurtunity.

Also, watch Speed Grapher. Thats a good plot that rather fun to watch and has a decent story to boot.

I know, I phrased it wrong, I meant to say that I read it but after the film came out I kinda gave it up

Usually, I either like an anime, or hate it. I'm currently watching Yumekui Merry, Baka to Test to Shakanjuu, Haruhi Suzumiya, Ookami-san, and a few others. I also have a list of animes I want to watch. I mostly like fantasy and romance, but if the anime seems interesting I'll try it.

Two animes I really liked were Tokyo Mew Mew and Higurashi no Naku koro Ni. Fullmetal Alchemist was my first, and I plan to watch Brotherhood. Here's a website that you can look up animes:

http://www.myanimelist.net/

And this is a website to watch it:

http://www.animefushigi.com/

I plan to become a big otaku by getting anime games and more mangas. And anything related to anime.

If you like action:
Fairy Tail
Black Cat
Any Gundam Series
Saint Seiya
Soul Eater
Ga Rei Zero
Full Metal Alchemist
The Tower of Druaga
To Aru Majutsu no Index is great for comedy and action
Katanagatari

My favorites are:
Clannad
Kanon
Air
Sola
Angel Beats <--- This one is a really good show for comedy and action

Higuarshi no naku Koro ni is good

If you tell me what sort of things you are into besides those few shows I can probably find a few you would like

oh man, i had totally forgotten about Speed Grapher! thanks for reminding me :) that was a fun series.

i'd also recommend Blade of the Immortal. it's pretty good, although the manga is about 100x better than the anime. still amazes me how many people don't read or watch it. just because the manga is published by Dark Horse in america, rather than Tokyopop or Viz, i guess...

Am I the only one who finds manga extremely scary? I mean the huge staring eyes, the small girls, the liberal take on gender identity...

Hope i didnt offend anyone with this post.

haha i take your bait

and i give you an obscure answer. You probably arent trying the right things (not your fault theres a lot of it) And ghibli does have a unique flavor which a lot of mainstream anime doesn;t quite capture, having said that im sure somebody here can pipe up and reccomend something good. (i haven't seen enough lately to reccomend effectively)
Well, at least I got a rational answer.

I've gone through a lot of the popular anime (Bebop, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note), and I just don't enjoy it much. I could keep experimenting to find anime I do like, or I could stick to stuff that I do enjoy.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. It's not like I hate anime. Vocal members of the fandom are a different matter, but the medium itself doesn't bother me.

I do tend to enjoy manga more than anime. Anime-wise, there's fewer titles I think I could recommend, though Princess Tutu factors very highly in that. I also still have a large appreciation for Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Slayers, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, and a few others that I like but probably wouldn't bother recommending. Not to mention a few I've heard were good (like most of Satoshi Kon's works, or Monster, or The Girl Who Leaped Through Time), but either haven't seen or didn't like, myself.

Manga titles, though...well, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Negima, Hayate the Combat Butler, and Ai Yori Aoshi feature very prominently as my favorites. I do read all the shounen Big Three (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece), which are all fairly good. Finished Chobits and Absolute Boyfriend a while ago, which were good. I'm almost done with Chibi Vampire and Ouran High School Host Club, which are both stellar. And I seriously wish they hadn't canceled the English language release of <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.145022-TYPE-MOON-reviews-Lunar-Legend-Tsukihime-manga>the totally awesome Tsukihime manga adaptation.

And there's a few more, but I'm clearly reduced to naming titles at the moment.

Well these are my favorites and I reccomend all of them except maybe Elfen Lied... a lot of people hate Elfen Lied...<.<

1. Serial Experiments Lain, It's The Second coming of Jesus, I even did a review!!! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.214642-Sacmans-Sac-tastic-Anime-Review-Serial-Experiments-Lain]

2. Ergo Proxy, A lot of people say Ergo Proxy is an anime you have to think about but on reflection it feels more like a parody or satire of over pretentious anime like Eva. The last episode is even titled "Deus Ex Machina."

3. Elfen Lied, What this show does is hard to explain. It's gory and bloody and filled with tasteless nudity, The story is rather bleh and the characters are for the most part poorly written... but the character of Lucy just made the entire show for me...<.<

4. Welcome To The NHK. It's hard to explain... I mean it's really the only slice of life I've ever loved this much but I'm just not exactly sure why. It could be the pitch black humor, the realistic characters, the social satire, or even the brilliant writing. Honestly, however, I think it's more the fact that Sato's, The main character's, situation hit's very close to home for me...

5. FLCL. I hate to sound like everyone else but FLCL is 6 episodes of awesome craziness!!!

6. Blue Sub No. 6. I used to watch this as a kid on Toonami and I really didn't get it but going back to watch all 4 episodes now I can safely say it's one of the most polished OVA series I've ever seen, with an amazing soundtrack, great action, great animation, a standout art style, and one of the most coherent messages about human nature I've seen in anime.

7.Gundam The 08TH MS Team. It really stands out for me because it's one of the few Gundam series that give a general sense of tension during fights because the action is unpredictable and the characters really endear themselves to the audience... The Gundams aren't indestructible demigods either...<.<

8. Paranoia Agent. It's a truly great murder mystery that keeps you guessing at every turn but look past that and you'll find a very intriguing deconstruction of the human mind...

9.Gungrave. Possibly one of the most underrated shows I've seen. Gungrave is a truly great story about friendship, love and betrayal without ever falling into cheesiness the great animation, spectacular fight scenes and well thought out character development doesn't hurt either.

10.Berserk. On one hand Berserk is very gory with alot of action, a great story filled with memorable, well written characters and has a great style and tricks that hide the poor animation, on the other hand they we're working with close to no budget and the ending ends on a cliffhanger that still hasn't been resolved in the manga after 30 chapters...

Well, right now there's a bit of a movement to go back and watch Armored Trooper Votoms and Mobile Police Patlabor because nothing in the current season is even close to as good, so I'd recommend everyone try that and broaden there horizons a little. You too can become one of the small handful of anime fans with any sense of history!

As you may guess from my avatar (Daibazaal from Golion), I like a lot of older things, although there are still a fair number of recent shows I've enjoyed a lot. Both of the shows I recommended are legitimately brilliant, as opposed to the show my avatar comes from, which is just so bad it's hilarious.
