Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite manga of all time OP.

As for recommendations...
FMA:Brotherhood is a good mix of action and story with a good amout of philosophical drama thrown in.

Tekkaman Blade is an older series but is one of the best animes iv ever see.
It still influences anime to this day and is one of the few animes that mixes Action, Drama, Grimdark, Humor, and Romance really well.

Samurai 7 is a re-imagining of an old Black and White movie called Seven Samurai, and its really good.
Mixes action, drama, and comedy well but its strong point are the characters.
Its got a great cast and a really bittersweet ending.

These are just a few Animes that cover a broad spectrum, if you have any specific tastes id be happy to give a recommendation for them if i know of one.

Also, watch Speed Grapher. Thats a good plot that rather fun to watch and has a decent story to boot.
Yeah watch it for the simple fact that the OP song is Girls on Film by Duran Duran...<.<

Well these are my favorites and I reccomend all of them except maybe Elfen Lied... a lot of people hate Elfen Lied...<.<

4. Welcome To The NHK. It's hard to explain... I mean it's really the only slice of life I've ever loved this much but I'm just not exactly sure why. It could be the pitch black humor, the realistic characters, the social satire, or even the brilliant writing. Honestly, however, I think it's more the fact that Sato's, The main character's, situation hits very close to home for me...
You stole my pick! Seriously though, Welcome To The NHK is unlike any other anime I've seen. It got deep story and the humour is awesome. It's even realistic.
I did find Elfen Lied pretty boring and uneventful, but I only watched the first episode...

Love Hina is also a good one if you want some relaxed comedy, though I would recommend the manga.

Black Lagoon for action.

Death Note for awesomeness (only read the manga so don't take my word for it), it got great story and is worth reading or watching.

Case Closed (Detective Conan) great series, but very long and yet not end in sight (as far as I know). If you like crime mysteries and long series this is for you.

I always liked the end. It was always so calming and peaceful. I used to stay up just to hear it, then go to bed.

And I like this opening theme better, probably cause I'm more used to hearing it

Rurouni Kenshin
Why was this not listed under manga as well? The manga is even better than the anime (though I suggest you watch at least a few episodes of the anime early on so you know what "oro" sounds like).

Also, nobody mentioned Claymore yet. It's quite good, it is.
I would only recommend claymore to patient people. It's starts off too slow for most. I found it boring until the awakened beings start showing up frequently. Even then I only watched because I liked the way some of the awakened beings looked.

DETROIT METAL CITY!!!!! Funniest Anime EVER!!! Anyone around here likes it?

now lets see...my other faves are:

Death Note (great plot-twists and intrigue)
Cowboy Bebop (great characters, atmosphere, soundtrack...it´s also stylish as hell)
Serial Experiments Lain (mature storytelling makes this a must-see)
Trigun (Vash is one of my favourite anime heroes ever:badass and also pretty funny)
Full Metal Alchemist (love the story and the brothers´friendship)
Gungrave (pretty cool gangster story...the 1st ep is weak, but it gets so much better!)
Generator Gawl (great pacing and a killer finale)

the anime ending of claymore was a cop-out. the series is stil running in the manga with the storyline being far more compelling. The anime ended with clare and raki walking off into the distance to start a new life with most of the claymores living to see the the new dawn(in the anime everyone got killed except for 5-6 claymores when they went north)

I don't know the complete ending to the series. I didn't like it to begin with so I wasn't loyal to it. I pretty much just watched the scenes with awakened beings I liked. I read part of the manga so I kinda knew where they would show up.

Because I don't read the manga. Simple as that.

I'm also surprisingly not interested in starting, though I know it'll devastate Giga.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

It's insane, but very funny. The art style is also very different from your garden-variety anime too. And the music is kick-ass to boot.

I figured I'd try to stick to stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet:

Boogiepop Phantom is hands down the creepiest TV anime I've ever seen, so you might want to give it a try. It's pretty hard to fully understand what's going on, but it's still worth it. One of very few animes or TV shows that actually let things get dark at night as opposed to blue. Also one of very few animes that are much better than their source material (or at least better than the manga, I haven't read the novels).

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Not as dark as the movie, but still awesome. The only criticism I have of the series is that the main motivation for the antagonist kind of gets lost in all the other stuff that happens, but aside from that it's pretty much gold all the way through.

Dennou Coil: Basically a perfect series. Like SAC but with children and augmented reality technology and a surprisingly complex plot. Funny, deviously well-written and exciting.

Ichigo Mashimaro: Comedy. Deadpan.

.hack//SIGN: Very good, but don't go in expecting too much fantasy/action. And don't let anyone tell you what happens at the end.

Galaxy Angel: The best way to explain this show is to explain the way it came about. They were going to make an adaptation of a dating sim/action game, but they hadn't received any information from the developers other than character designs. Instead of waiting, they just went ahead and did whatever they wanted, in this case being completely absurd, surreal comedy.

Aoi Hana: Way, way too short. A beautiful and thoughtful drama about a lesbian girl and her best friend. Especially notable for avoiding nearly most anime cliches and fanservice, producing a very graceful and emotional show.

Aria: I'm not going to mince words, this anime is very slow-paced. If that's a problem, this may not be the show for you. Still, it's an excellent story about the calm life on a terraformed Mars. With gondoliers. And some philosophy.

Also:
K-on!, Azumanga Daioh, Hidamari Sketch and Sketchbook are awesome if you like the genre (comedy/slice of life/likeable and attractive young women having fun).

Actually, you should definitely watch K-on!, then the others if you liked it. Alternatively, watch Azumanga Daioh first, then the others. I didn't "get" Hidamari Sketch the first time I watched, but I came back to it after a year or two and suddenly it was awesome.

Neon Genesis Evangelion- It is so good, but is subject to this. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitle6cd1cskka05i]

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya- take every trope and bashes it over the head.

Darker than Black- breaks formulas.

Cyborg 009- worth the watch.

Blue Sub Number 6- post apocalyptic before it was cliche.

Rebuild of Evangelion These movies are what Hideaki Anno wanted Neon Genesis Evangelion to be. He has all the creative freedom and budget in the world and it shows.

I can not recommend Rebuild enough.
