It appears to me that lots of Escapists watch anime, and lots of jokes and references are made about it. So I want in.

Does anybody have some places to watch anime? Or any recommendations?

The old standby of Neon Genesis Evangelion (the only anime I've ever liked) is always a good place to start provided you can get your head around it. A fantastically clever series that one. I'm sure others will also have good suggestions.

I also liked DeathNote in the Manga version of it...

Go to the fans page [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/Anime-Fans] and get a list of the admins, after you're done PMing is the way to ask for sites and the like. A good place to start though would be to come to the group and tell us what you enjoy, you will have 50 people telling you the best names of every genre.

My recommendation? Don't listen to other people, get a big list and find out what you like yourself.

Cause some people like terrible, and some people like freaky. And that is not fun to watch.

As for the list, I can't help ya, I don't use the internet enough to know where anything but large stores of porno and guns are.

It really depends on what you like, action, adventure, sci-fi, horror, romance. There is an anime for every type. Also if you like huge series or just simple movies. I HIGHLY recommend Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. That actually got a theater release. Death note is good, and so is Code Geass. My firs anime was Akira so it's a pretty good start as well. I honestly don't care for Neon Genesis only because of the long winding story and unlikable main character.

I've been watching Martian Successor Nandesco, rented from the local library. Try there or a video rental shop. Otherwise you could always torrent it.

No! Bad! *hits with rolled up newspaper. No matter the circumstances we do not mention such sites here. Its too easy to bring down mod wrath doing so.
to quote what Paulgruberman posted in the anime fans page on such matters:

Calm down quick-quoter. I saw your post just as I posted mine, then edited it.

Sorry, I jumped the gun a bit. I can only offer apologies for my actions. I was out of line, I am sorry.

There are plenty of places, if you just use google. Downloading episodes is easy too, know how to search and download (not that I am endorsing downloading foreign material that isn't even available in our country: that would be stealing). Point is, it's easy. I recommend:

Death Note (psychological thriller - most intelligent stuff I've ever seen)

Full Metal Alchemist (fantasy/drama/action - dynamic show with great concepts and lovable characters)

Cowboy Bebop (sci-fi/action/drama - absolute classic, must-see)

Clannad and Clannad After Story (comedy/romance/drama - guaranteed to make you cry, no matter how hardcore you think you are)

There are plenty more, but there are some starting blocks. Have fun.

well he asked for a site and zomganime took down a lot of its content due to companies saying so so the rest is fine (untill an american company buys it out then bye bye content)

I'm starting to get into Death Note. Only saw the first three episodes on demand, though. Waiting for the fourth.

Watch Akira, or better, read Akira. Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon are great if you like your edgy heroes and bazillions of guns. Gurren Lagann is amazing in that every episode is the Rule of Cool http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool personified. Or Episodified. Anyway.
Also, Tekkonkinkreet is very weird and arty, but worth watching nonetheless.

There's only one anime film I ever sat through, and that was steamboy (Great film by the way). Though in terms of TV shows, the furthest I can state is that I used to watch shows like pokemon and yu-gi-oh back when saturday morning cartoons were something to look forward to. And on top of that, I have a fair few friends who upon observation, do not help defy cliche. They quote anime, defend anime, watch anime, yap on about anime, eat anime fuck anime whatever else you can do with a bloody japanese cartoon! *Ahem* And I do own a gundam figure, mainly because I picked it up in a nice market near Tokyo in my travels, because I thought it would make a fine souvenir. So I'm not really one to talk about it, though from the many rants of my mates, I gather you should start out on mainstream anime (Dragonball Z, Naruto), then move onto slightly less mainstream stuff (Bleach, Haruhi), then go for the really far out stuff to be baptised into the world of sad twenty-something westerners who probably have extremely empty lives if all they seem capable of doing is discussing how deep a motherfucking cartoon is! *Ahem* Though from what I've heard, watch it online, uncut and straight from the source, because normally when it gets broadcast in areas outside of Japan, they edit it quite a bit.
