I really do enjoy animes, and since cartoon network is being taken over by.. whatever that *thing* is. I don't read mangas, because I don't feel like buying 200 books. But I can't enjoy some animes..

The ones that just never end bother me. I like a good story, and I think we all like a good story. One good thing about stories is that reach a good end. Some animes that just drag on forever, and ever, and ever to me get very boring very fast. Inuyasha was my first anime, and I thought it was alright. Then I realized they *literally went around season, after season with the same plot ideas*

How many times is Naruto going to come close to Sasuke? JUST HOW MANY?!

Stupid looking anime characters. Some anime characters just look plain dumb, and stupid. I don't have a "everything needs to look cool." complex... But there is just a line that needs to be drawn. Remember the beach whale from Bleach? ... Just why?

And the ones with like 10-20 arms. What is Animes, and having people with extra limbs?

Insanely corny dialogue. The friendship speeches, the love speeches, the honor speeches, the right speeches, the nobility speeches, the damn corny speeches. Then there's the worst kind.. The dark brooding speeches. The you don't understand me speeches. The I am so much suffering, and pain speeches. Etc. etc. I honestly don't mind these, but some *Cough Naruto cough* seem to have these stupid speeches in every 5-10 episodes. Enooough!

There's establishing a point, and a personality. A reason why a character is doing things. What's his goal, and then there's him puking all over everyone about it.

Then there's the... pointing out the obvious statements. I don't mind them thinking it, but actually saying it? Damn that's annoying.. don't insult me writers. I can very well understand what's going on.

My last thing. THE FLASHBACKS, AND THE RE-CAPS. Holy crap. Some animes just have way too many flash backs, and re-caps about what we already know.

If you're getting tired of those things, you probably should cut back on the shonen anime. That kind of stuff is by far most prevalent in those kind of shows. You might want to check out some seinen anime, or even just less mainstream shonen, there's some extremely well written stuff out there that hasn't hit the mainstream.

You'll usually have some of that stuff to a degree, but it's not hard to find shows that minimize those factors.

I know next to nothing about anime.. Is Shonen a series, or a writer?

Shonen = Japanese for little boys anime, under 15
Seinen = Adult male anime, 18+

And I agree with Savo. Naruto is just kids stuff, there's far more anime out there, here are some recommendations.
-Code Geass
-Death Note
-Tengenn Toppa Gurren Lagann

All of which have a small amount of episodes compared to naruto, (2 have like under 30 one has 2 seasons for over 50 total) and actually have a plot with things moving forward.

I already saw deathnote. It was so good. ._.

Alrighty! I will check those out! Thank you.

Maybe knowing the difference will help me find more animes with some weight behind them.

Feel free to send me a message if you need any more anime to watch.

There's tonnes of great anime, you just have to look in the right place.

Shounen anime is basically a genre of anime mainly aimed at younger male teens (Shounen litterally means "boy".) They are generally stuff such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, Death Note, Soul Eater, etc., and usually they're the long running series that tend to have those tropes and cliches,

That's a genre of anime I usually avoid, so yeah, like Savo said, you might wanna cut back on those and maybe add some new anime from some other genre. Seinen are anime generally made for older male viewers, and are (usually) a lot smarter and better written, and most of all shorter, and are stuff like Hellsing, Berserk, Monster, Baccano!, etc. Then you also have Shoujo, which are anime aimed at young girls, and are mostly romances, and Josei, anime aimed at older women. While they're aimed at a female audience, you can still find some shows here you might like.

Want more? Here's some I'd like to add:

I've watched these:

- Darker than Black (my personal favorite, though it isn't for everyone)
- Akira (manga's better in my opinion)
- Monster
- Berserk (okay, anime's not good, but the manga is so fucking awesome)

Ones that I've heard are good and interest me:

- Stein's Gate
- Welcome to the NHK

Welcome to some of the more mature stuff, OP. I've noticed that's it's insanely hard to tolerate shonen after seeing some seinen. Hope you like what I've recommended. :)

What kind of genres do you like? We can recommend anime based on that if you like.

I just realize there was.. mm. I don't know how to put it, but you understand what I mean.
Now that I know this i'll put in more effort into finding more adult themed animes.

The ones listed already are pretty good. I'll add a few more:

Cowboy Bebop
Baccano!
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (might be classified as shounen, but if so, then this one's the best of the bunch)
Hellsing Ultimate (if you enjoy ridiculous levels of violence)

Shonen is anime/manga for younger boys. They tend to be combat focused and deal very little with drama or emotions (see Naruto, Fairy Tail). There are exceptions (see Bakuman, Love Hina), and these are often well remembered.

Seinen is anime/manga for older men. These can often be just as shallow as shonen except for the massive amounts of pornography in them (see To-Love-Ru: Darkness, Omamori Himari, Highschool of the Dead) but often deal with scary subject material that people don't want to talk about, such as the emotional trauma of a rape victim.

Shoujo is anime/manga for young girls. This is mostly moe and magical girl stuff (see K-ON, Sailor Moon). You know, over-the-top cutesy and believe-in-the-powers-of-friendship/love stuff. Just like shonen, it's very shallow, coming down to little more than a bad romantic comedy.

Josei is anime/manga for older girls. These stories often have weight and sometimes have great characters. These are often about unknown love or love that sprouts from friendships or... screw it, it's almost all love-related stuff (see Happy Mari, Loveless). Some of it seems to be exceedingly dark too.

If you're bored of the shonen cliches and want to expand your repertoire a bit, I would suggest watching Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist, Elfen Lied, Baccano, Bakuman, Love Hina(I recommend reading this one, you can get the omnibuses), Black Lagoon, Angel Beats! and Beelezebub. That last one is a shonen anime, but it doesn't have most of the annoying cliches and it's one of the more entertaining. Angel Beats! comes with a massive recommendation as it's one of the only anime that has ever made me cry; it's funny, clever and bittersweet.

Anime and manga is all about experimentation. There are so many different genres, so you can basically find whatever kind of thing you're looking for. This can range from yaoi (guy/guy) to slice-of-life. A good place to find what you like would be [a href="http://www.mangareader.net/search]here[/a]. Mods, I am not advocating piracy. This is a reference purely to help someone find what suits them.

Good luck!

The 80's called, it wants you to sample it's delectable animated craziness. Some people may say it was filled with overly violent nonsense, but it was the one time anime could experiment to its heart's content and some of the results are glorious.
