In many some games, there are puzzles/sequences that have you run rings when there are simple and obvious ways to accomplish the same task. For example, in Half-Life 2; near the beginning of Ravenholm, there is an electrified fence and a wire leading from it to a circuit box. Instead of just being able to shoot a circle saw at the wire and cut it half, you have to go through a house full of zombies in order to turn off the box.

Are there any other puzzles like this?

Every single puzzle in Half-Life 2 is like that... I hate it. The gravity gun really ruined that game for me.

Mass Effect:

"Oooh, a computer console! I shall hack it by playing radial Frogger!"
"Oooh, a door! I shall unlock it by playing radial Frogger!"
"Oooh, a locked locker! I shall hack the padlock by playing radial Frogger!"

Fair enough so far. But then it starts getting slightly silly:

"Oooh, a crashed space probe! I shall check it for loot by playing radial Frogger!"
"Oooh, a corpse! I shall search its pockets by playing radial Frogger!"

...and then it just goes bonkers.

"Oooh, a rock! I shall collect a sample of iron ore by playing radial Frogger! With a time limit, in case the rock wants to go somewhere else and have a picnic!"

The stupidly long and stupidly stupid puzzle in RE5
Which one? i dont really remember any long or annoying or even difficult puzzles in RE5
I think it's chapter 4-1, but I'm not too sure.
You line some beams up to open another platform to line some more beams up to repeat the process. then you pull some levers to reveal some stairs to pull some more leavers to repeat again.
Not so much as a puzzle, but I think it takes the piss.

Agreed.

I'd also add in random platforming sections in FPS games, and I'm looking at you Half Life. Really enjoyed it all the way until the very last section, where I found myself having to jump from one floating platform to another. Very annoying and out of place, and completely unnecessary.

Also on the jumping point, Ultima 8, which had a similar fascination with jumping, but this time for an isometric RPG. Completely out of character with the rest of the series.

May as well also add: Any game that lets you become near god like (Many RPGs), and yet you can't destroy doors/locks/chests to progress, you either must use lockpicking or find the key (and sometimes you can't lockpick either!).

There were a few puzzles in God of War 1 & 2 that made me want to smash my PS2 and every living thing in sight.

Favorites include:
-The Sky Room in GoW 1 when the floor opens and you fall to your death.
-The entire Hades part with the spinning blades.
-The Phoenix chamber in GoW2.

Those "puzzles" in Fable 2 in which you have to attack a circle in the correct way based on its color - it just got so monotonous and boring very quickly...

Lets not forget those really difficult puzzles in Gears of War 2 - I had to use a walk through to get past them!

Remember Condemned?
the snotty doors that would only be knocked open by a particular type of hammer
