I've been wondering about this for a while, now and purely out of curiosity...

For those of you (un)lucky enough to be in full time employment, how do you take up your holiday allocation? All in one go or do you break it down into a week here and a week there (or w/e).

I try to space it out over the course of the year. We have 25 floating days with up to 4 reserved for a Christmas shutdown.

Last year I forgot to take it and got to September with about 18 days untaken. I had to take a week off every month for the rest of the year, which sounds great but I didn't get any work done and it caused me some issues.

You can have too much of a good thing.

Well I'm taking a week of next month to go to Paris/London and another week off for Christmas.

Course, I only have 14 days of leave, so that makes it much simpler for me.

Usually I spread it out through the year, a few days for LANs, Escapism and some festivals. This year I'm taking 3 weeks 'en bloc' to visit some friends in the States and Aruba (and tacked on EscPo)

I have over a hundred hours of annual leave stored up. I used to have more but it got burned up during recovery from a surgery.

I try to save it up for things like weddings I need to attend because I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married along with the occasional just for fun trip.

I'm in my first year at my workplace, so I got up to 20 unpaid days (pay deduction is spread across the year so my paycheques will all look the same, no dips in money) off. I took the 20, and worked it so I have a long weekend or a day off every 2-3 weeks if you work in holidays. I had no plans to go anywhere, so I figure it'll save my sanity.

Next year I'll have 15 days + up to 20 unpaid, so not sure how much I'll take, but I'll still take a good number of spread out days and then maybe a week here or there, depending on vacation planning.

Every payday I earn a half day of a sick day, so I'm not worrying about that. ... Except I only have like 3 left right now and have to take one on Friday due to an appointment.

I have a day and a half of vacation (or so) saved up right now that I'll keep for evergencies, too. Our work years run April 1 - March 31 so I may want an extra day or so off come January.

I'll speak for my parents here, as they have annual leave and I lack a full time job.

My dad usually books a week off at a time. Normally to fix up something in the house. If his annual is about to reset I think April, he'll try to use his annual leave as much as possible.

My mum normally books a day off once per week. That's about it.

I spread it out, I like to take short holidays throughout the year rather than one long break. It feels like I have more time off that way.

This mean you're finally going to Germany ? :p

I am a lucky bastard and work for a company that must get all federal holidays off, so I can do awesome things like spend very little vacation over Christmas and still get lots of days off.

As for other times during the year, I try to sync up with my friends. I'll plan vacations with people and take a few days off here or there. If it's suitably epic, I'll take more time, but usually I try for something small every so often, especially in the spring/summer section where there are almost no holidays. (Anyone in America notice that all the holidays are fall/winter? By the time you hit October you're getting like two long weekends a month, and then there's Thanksgiving and Christmas.)

I usually take one big holiday and save like 25% for random days, like conventions or something like that.

Just now became eligible for vacation, so I'll be using it all at once to go to the Escapist Expo this year.
