I'm pretty sure they claimed they were going to take down Facebook last year and it didn't happen then, so I'm going to have to see it before I believe it. Since Anonymous doesn't have a central authority any attention-seekers can make grandiose claims without the resources or skill to back it up.
They "claimed" they would like 3 times last year. It never happened and it never will.

These guys are a joke. Have they ever actually brought any website down for longer than a couple of days? Even if they have, have they ever really achieved anything?

Will they take down Facebook?

Or will they do the internet equivalent of throwing a brick through a window and running away like they always do?
I glanced at the thread title and thought about when facebook went out on me for a couple of hours last night.

Thought they'd actually accomplished something for a change xD

Facebook, along with Google, Wikipedia, and just about every other site in Alexa top 20, is effectively immune to denial of service attacks. Their infrastructure is already scaled to such a ludicrous degree that you'd need a botnet a hundred million strong to stand a chance. What's going to happen on November 5th is a network engineer watching the traffic will say "oh, there's a half percent spike today... intriguing", filter the offending computers, and step away for some coffee.

Now that i'm not on Facebook anymore they may very well do so. I mean, let's be realistic here, they probably won't but i wouldn't mind if they did.

Pretty damn sure they said the same things last year, and the year before that.. and the year before that. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Anon is a joke, and haven't done anything decent (or at least something I support) for a long, long time.

I wish these people would stop using the name 'Anon' as if it means anything, cause it doesn't it just makes them look stupid and turns them into a laughing stock before they even fail at what they attempt to do.

[sarc] I hope facebook can handle DOS attacks. [/sarc]

Facebook Status on November the 5th: 'Remember when Anon took down Facebook today? Yeah, that was awesome'. Also, this does far more collateral damage to Innocent Facebook users then to Zynga anyways. It's a grossly misdirected attack.

Not like taking down Facebook (or at least putting a dent in it) would be a bad thing, in and of itself. *Sigh*

I hope not. Past the annoying hipster photography and morons, facebook is a damn useful communication tool, it's been used several times (including right now) to plan university group projects. Now, instead of desperately trying to get everyone in one place at one time, we can have group discussions on facebook, even post documents on there, script drafts, shooting schedules, what needs to be done by who, when, where.

That's not mentioning how easy it is to organise events on there, and the fact that one of my friends has used the site to start an awareness campaign for bone marrow donation that's now incredibly successful. In the past, that would've required teams of advertisers and tons of money. Now, all it requires is one broke student and a decent friends list of people willing to share content, which I find incredible.

I've gone on a bit of a tengent here, but it annoys me when people can't see the good parts of "the next big thing" through cynicism.

I offer a challenge to anyone who honestly believes this: go into one of Anonymous' IRC networks (anonops or anonnet, either will do) on November 5th and mention the Facebook op. I can guarantee you will be kicked from the server just for mentioning it, let alone actually trying to do it. These rumors have nothing to do with the part of Anonymous that is actually capable of doing anything, and it really gets them annoyed when people start these rumors up. They're pretty much the equivalent of those old rumors about how Facebook would start charging for access on a given date: completely false, and based in trolling.

Edit: forgot to put in the relevant date when writing this initially. My own sentence structure caused me to lose my train of thought after the parenthetical portion.

Anonymous has a better chance of dispensing dildos and top hats from a tampon vending machine then they do taking down Faceroll.

And even on the astronomical chance that they actually DO it (the taking down Faceroll thing, not the other one) I'll slightly chuckle as I go back to playing Pokemon White 2.

I'm pretty sure anonymous is more of a meme than an actual group.

I could pretty easily just get a Guy Fawkes mask and make wild claims such as "We're shutting down Disney for buying Lucas studios" or "We're going to shut down all electronic communication systems forever and there's nothing you can do about it! MAUAHAHAHA" and they would technically be official Anonymous announcements.

Seems petty, but since they've decided to target Facebook in order to get to them? They could single-handedly increase voter turn-out by doing so, particularly if they leave this message (somehow):

"Please go out and vote!
...Or else Facebook is staying down."

Being partisan to either candidate would be in bad taste; but with the internet being the internet, that could be wishful thinking. Crazy, absurd, almost certainly illegal... but it just might work... if for all the wrong reasons.
