This time, Rise of the Argonauts gets it's nipples twisted.

This comes hot on the heels of the dreadful Lord of the Rings: Conquest game that had a lot of people excited.

Are our expectations getting higher and higher? Or are games getting progressively worse? Or am I imagining things?

I believe it's neither our expectations that are getting higher nor the games getting statistically worse, it's just more games.
Just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more games.
That's why there are more bad games.

The thing is we are now into February. Another month and a sixth of the year has gone by. There has not been even an average game release in 2009 yet, it has all been crap. At this rate we can expect maybe 4 or 5 memorable titles at most during a year and that's pretty shocking compared to how it used to be. In the heyday of the Xbox and PS2 you could get that in a week.

Oh come now, the same thing happened at the beggining of 2008.

It started dry, like all years do, and then towards the holiday season we started seeing some awesome games.

Just give it more time, yeesh, be a little patient.

It's sad news really. Both those games looked cool, but then they turned out to suck.

The thing you're forgetting here is that every publisher out there basically aims their releases at the christmas period if it's at all possible, so with that in mind expecting any excellent games right after it is kind of silly. It'll start picking up starting this month: we'll see releases like Street Fighter IV and Killzone 2 drop. Empire: Total War next month.

Oh, and I can already name two good games that were released this year: Crayon Physics Deluxe and Skate 2.

How many times have we brought bad games because they gave great eye candy.

I know right? I actually pre-ordered Lost: Via Domus just because I'm a fan of the show. That and Two Worlds were the worst freakin' games I ever bought.

It's a combination of the two, really. Development costs have skyrocketed as games have advanced technologically, often resulting in a game shipping before it's actually fun to play. It's rare that I play a game and find that there is absolutely no points of merit to be found anywhere. In fact, many of the issues I find are ones of balance, stabaility, control or other basic tuning issues that could have probably been hammered out with a few extra months in development.

I feel like there are about two or three good games produced every year.

But those two good games aren't actually two good games.

They're more like ten games that would be really good if you remixed their best design elements into two games and threw out all the rest.

I actually had fun with Rise of the Argonauts. It certainly had it's issues, but the game had a very cool (and very original) leveling system, the combat was pretty fun and the story and characters where surprisingly enjoyable. Like I said before, the game has it's issues; it's a bit too short and it's plagued with technical shortcomings, but there is a lot of fun to be had if you can bring yourself to look beyond the flaws.
