Ok, I've decided to give Fallout 3 another chance, I played it shortly after it was released and while I had fun it didn't really grab me much.
However, after watching my buddy play it for a couple of hours and seeing the stupid shit he was getting up to I want to give it another go.
I remember thinking that the combat was pretty shitty. The VATS thing, while a good idea kind of seemed stupid that you almost had to be giving the bad guy a hug to get decent percentages and Firing 3 point blank shotgun blasts into a mutants face without him taking any damage made me think the game was fucking dumb and broke the immerssion.
So I intend to play through this time pretty much avoiding combat as much as possible, I want to be a sneaky, charming character who either talks his way out of trouble or just sneaks right past it. Obviously you have to fight at some point but the mellee style appeals to me and looks like more fun than pew pew laser pistol gayness.
'Why the fuck are you telling us beholdmycape you massive cock?' you're probably thinking and that's fair enough but im telling you guys so hopefully you can share some great hints and tips with me, tell me if the way I want to play is even viable, if you've done it and whether it was fun, or how you 'did' playthrough, neat little things about the game, how much your mother weighs in imperial measurements. Erm, maybe not that last one.
So,let's talk about Fallout 3!

If you want to avoid combat as much as possible, raise your lockpick and science skills quickly. Large chunks of fighting can be skipped by hacking turrets or going through certain doors.

Well, my girl is a sniper/marksman type of character. She can pick off a raider from half a click away and get a headshot. I personally love doing this, but I've seen the people who spec in the melee combat portion, and I gotta say, making a guy lose his head with nothing but a powerfist sounds awesome, I'll probably do that my next play through. :p

Tis a good game

I have played Fallout 3, and completed it, I think its one of the best games i've played this year (and maybe last year followed by Bioshock).

The Story line was great, the free roam landscape was great, I don't think I can find many faults with it. But after playing it for ages it can get a bit boring, And even now I feel like playing it again.

I think Fallout 3 pushes you too much into combat compared to the first 2 where you could theoretically get through the game without much fighting.

But the game is great, I started playing again after a few months and its amazing the amount of things I missed the first time through.

Basically, my advice would be too stick to your established style of playing, in this case being a sneaky bastard, as it does add to the immersion and makes a more enjoyable experience.

Basically, you could drive the endboss to suicide using dialogue options only unlocked with high intelligence and speech...
Man that was awesome!

Get a Combat Shotgun, and put the settings on Very Easy.

Job done. Immersion solved, easy kills and lotsa' fun.

Yeah, what RocketPocket said, sneak around like a ninja and snipe those fuckers in the head from as far as possible, even the hunting rifle is good for it, better than the sniper rifle IMO.

Points in stealth and small guns. Good perception and agility. Once you level up a bit there are perks to give you higher chances to hit with 1 & 2 handed guns & hit in the head in VATS. Plus perks that increase critical damage by 50%, since hitting an enemy that isn't aware of you is an auto crit it blows away most things barring deathclaws.

The only criticism I have of the game is there isn't enough of it and a lot of the locations get a bit samey, but if you got it on PC there are loads of mods.

Also, choose the 'educated' perk (I think thats what it's called) it gives you an extra skill point for every skill book you read, which by the end will amount to a lot.

Great stuff guys, keep em coming.

RocketPocket, that sniping action sounds like fun but would I have to choose between that or mellee or can I be good at both?.

scumofsociety you mention sniping aswell and then say to put points in small guns, are sniper rifles classed as small guns?

Anything that fires bullets (or shotgun shells) and isn't a minigun counts as a small gun. Basically all non energy small arms.

PS: If you are going to use mods, don't install patch 1.5, it messes a lot of up, stay on patch 1.4.

hold on to the following junk youll find on your travels for crafting:

toy cars (from kids bedrooms), surgical tubing (infirmaries), paint guns (toolboxes and janitor closets), radscorpion poison glands (duh) for the Dartgun.

lawnmower blades (lawnmowers and raider outposts), motorcycle gas tanks (quite uncommon), motorcycle handbrake (quite uncommon, but usually theres one close to a gas tank), pilotlights (ovens) for the Shishkebab (best melee weapon in the game, burning sword that sets enemies on fire.)

lunchboxes (offices and kids bedrooms), sensor modules (tool boxes), cherry bombs (random, kind of common. theres one in the toilet in the bethesda ruins, lol), for bottlecap mines (if your into using explosives, these babies pack a serious punch. A pile of these can kill just about anything.

medical braces (infirmaries), wonderglue (toolboxes), leather belts (random locations) and deathclaw hands (if you manage to kill one at early levels...) for the Deathclaw Gaunlet (Most powerful fist weapon (unarmed) that ignores armor value, plus it looks AWESOME)

These are some of the stuff you can make. I havent made the other stuff yet so I dont know the exact materials. You will also want to hold on to Nuka Cola Quantum, you can make insanely powerful grenades out of them later, or collect 30 for someone for a quest. (can either get you the schematic for the grenades or a special gun)

Another tip: I wouldnt use any skill books you find untill you get the perk that doubles the amount of skillpoints you get from reading books.

Another tip: Henchmen can be fun. Im not sure about any henchmens stealth abilities, put I believe Dogmeat is good at it. Plus its fun to have a dog. I prefer hanging out with Jericho, but thats only because my character is evil. (he doesnt hang out with goody two-shoes)

Depending on wich platform you play, but you can drag stuff around with a button. (R3 for ps3) Once you get your own house (youll get one early if you do a quest in megaton) all the stuff you drop on the ground will stay there forever. I myself had lots of fun decorating my house with stuff I collected like garden gnomes, nukacola trucks and weapons. I felt good when I finally filled up all the space in my cabinet with neatly lines up boxes of food and such. Using the glowing bottled of nuka quantum for decorative lighting. I dont know about you but I spent a lot of time going in dungeons collecting stuff. What would you do if your country became a radio active wasteland? My character went out to loot a lifetime supply of cigarattes and booze!
