This actually looks pretty legit so if you don't want to see the map until you pop in the game don't click on the link below.

So if you did click on the link, what do you think?

UPDATE:
So this map apparently is legit; it's the one in the strategy guide.
R* responded by releasing a map that tries to give a sense of scale by comparing the overhead (character switching) shots from the trailer and showing you how big they are on the map that leaked.

It does actually make the city appear a bit bigger to me. Things I thought were alleyways before are actually full streets.

Barren? You can't really tell from the map. It could have a lot of interesting features that aren't noticeable at this scale. The city does seem kind of small. That's just because it seems like it doesn't have very many blocks. Those blocks could be huge. We wont really know 'till we play it. I hope I'm wrong.

I agree but look at IV. Youve seen one big building then youve seen them all diversity is what makes it interesting although i think the city:countryside ratio could be a bit bigger

If we assume that both airports are roughly the same size then its safe to say that the city portion is the same size as one of the GTA IV cities. The desert/inland sea portion is roughly the size of one of GTA IVs islands

I think it should have been more of 50/50 split. Gta 4 was just 4 sprawling cities with the odd park, this looks like the top right island in gta 4 crashed into red dead dead redemption. Less city means less buildings, less buildings means fewer heists..... Unless you heist the same buildings multiple times.

I also expected it to be more broken up, like gta 4. This is just a lump of land with a lake and a couple of puddles.... Kind of renders boats obsolete, doesn't it? Not to mention the new submarine and diving additions.

Though you can't tell from just a flat map from 200 miles up.

Actually, I'd bet that the LS airport is a little bigger than the LC airport. The LC airport was mostly cosmetic while the LS airport needs to be more functional. We can even see that it's got a couple of additional runways...or something.

I'm not sure if it's been confirmed or not, but the City of Los Santos itself is bigger than all of IV's Liberty City. In that you can fit GTA IV's map in Los Santos itself alone.
I saw an image on Reddit comparing the cities in the two games judging by the block sizes and as far as i can recall they came out to roughly the same size. Can't find the image now but i'm not worried at all by the size of Los Santos.

As for the projected baron-ness, the parts that look relatively empty are all mountains and countryside, so it kinda makes sense. If anything it provides more space for bezzing around in monster trucks and hurtling round at mach speeds in jet fighters and whatnot. And if San Andreas is anything to go by, there'll be plenty of cool vehicles and items and conveniently places ramps around to make going out into the sticks worthwhile.

Yeh, i'm not worried. Looks good.

I kind of hope they do hide something like that out there that only has a ridiculously small chance of actually appearing as a homage to the theories around GTA: San Andreas.

if you look on the map there are 2 places it says "mount" so 2 huge mountains, if you also remember from the video's ;) its not gonna be completely barren :p also check this thread -> http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.828053-Grand-Theft-Auto-Vs-Map-Leaked-is-Huge#20140837

So apparently NeoGaf members have compared the San Andreas map and this one, the result is this:

So it yeah, it's going to be pretty big. Assuming the image is reliable.

It was already paid homage in RDR Undead Nightmare.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Would still be good to see something hidden in the wilderness in GTA V.

If claims of the city being as big as the city in GTA 4 are true, then we are going to have a MASSIVE playground to work with. Heh, maybe I'll run out into the wilderness with some friends in free roam and we'll play hide and seek with guns.

I like it this way. My favourite part about San Andreas was going around the country, driving offroad, it was a real adventure. I'm pleased to see it followed SA's example. The whole grey, monotonous environment in GTA V was part of why it was so boring. With this, there will be a real diversity of places to go.

Looking at the South-East part of the map, notice there's a place called "National Office of Security Enforcement", i.e. NOSE. I bet you'll get shot on sight if you trespass there.

The airport is the only real common feature that i can think of to match the scale. If you are correct and los santos airport is bigger than liberty city airport then we can scale the entire city up in comparison and possibly say that los santos is the equivelant of 1.5 of liberty cities islands which to be fair is a fair big chunk of city and the legend seems to be packed with points of interest throughout the city

It's just a hunch but you can also see that the strip by sandy shores is a little smaller so the LS airport strip isn't even the minimum space needed for a landing. Also like I mentioned above, some of those little alleyway looking things on the map are whole streets so I'm starting to think the map might not be as small as it seemed at first.
Really we're not going to be able to tell for sure until we're in it.
I'm actually tempted to pop in San Andreas and drive a circuit around the map and compare the time with the new one next week. I also have HotPants stuck in my head so some Master Sounds would be cool right now.

Overall I have to say that I'm glad the big leaks were the map and the music because those are the only spoilers I can appreciate for a GTA game. Everything else I'd rather find out about while playing.
