That sounds all too familiar to my old Grand Am. I'm assuming it's automatic? How much do you think it would cost to fix? and could it be the muffler??
Doesn't sound like the muffler to me, especially if you're getting two different sounds depending on the gear. And it the description of the reverse gear doesn't match up with the "winching" sound some standard trannies make all the time in reverse. It sounds much like how my tranny started its downward slide into obliteration.
