Another Internet Phenomena

So I want to discuss a recent internet phenomena I keep observing; the escalation of an issue to ridiculous proportions based on the reaction to the reaction...

OK that's wasn't as clear as I thought, time for an example. I was trawling facebook recently and a female presenter of an Australian video game review TV show posted a selfie of herself on holiday. She was in a bikini but you could only see her shoulder.

Anyway, I started reading through the comments and I saw dozens of "The people asking for marriage are so creepy" or "You guys proposing to her need to get laid" etc. Curios, and due to the fact there weren't that many comments at the time I decided to find out how many marriage proposals there were.

I didn't find any comment that mentioned marriage. There was one that said "I love you" which felt more like a reference to a Scrubs joke than anything serious, and a significant number of "Damn, u hot!!!" but no marriage requests.

Now this isn't going to get blown up into a big issue but it's fascinating that so many can continue to propagate a sentiment that never existed.

Another example is that of the Polygon review of Dragons Crown and that whole Fiasco. People made such a big deal about the nerd rage in the comments, but again I read the comments, most were civil, presenting their reasons as to why they felt the review was bad. Sure their were some that acted like trolls but they were insignificant, to pull a number out of my arse less than 5%, yet it spiraled to ever greater heights as this big issue of gamers not being able to handle a different opinion.

I originally chalked this up to critics being overly sensitive, not being able to handle criticism of their work and banding together, but now I'm not so sure.

So Escapists...

Agree? Disagree?

Isn't the overblown comment in reaction to another comment a staple of the internet? I believe that phenomenon is responsible for more than quite a few threads around here.

In retrospect, I can't say I've noticed that in the past, but now that I know...

Incidentally, have you ever seen the 80's movie Wolfen? I couldn't help but notice your name. Good movie. Just enough 80s cheese, but with serious subject matter, the supernatural, and Albert Finney. Classic.

Well, I think the proper solution to this is to destroy Facebook. And if it isn't the solution, I believe we should do it anyway.

Yeah, and not just threads. Every now and then a Video by Moviebob or Jim Sterling will be put up for issues I didn't know were issues. At first I thought I just wasn't "in the know" but now I'm questioning that too.

I had not heard about it before, but I'm certainly going to check it out. Looks kinda cool :)

Dude, you're right! That totally happened to me with Jim's 'Fake Gamer Girls' video.

This is going to get weird:

The reason Jim's video didn't strike me as odd was I didn't even know that there was a backlash against so-called "fake" gamer girls. And seeing his reaction without knowing what the heck he was talking about merely shifted that in my brain to the "other" pile. It's shameful to admit this, but it was easier for me to accept at face value:

There was an actual backlash against "fake" gamer girls, and...
There was a backlash against the backlash

In reality, I've never seen evidence of any of those things (including "fake" gamer girls). It's not so much that I'm part sheeple, it's just that I consider myself open-minded enough to accept the possibility of something existing without me having seen it personally.

Jesus, I believe I have officially stopped making sense.
