Where's the next Speilberg, Cameron, De Palma, Ridley Scott, Kubrick, etc.?
Denis Villeneuve, Nicolas Winding Refn, Panos Cosmatos.. That's about all I got for now.
Eh, i don' t know about Refn, chief. Villeneuve is probably the most correct answer here, though.

Also: Jorgos Lantimos and Jordan Peele... And now fingers crossed i didn't jinx it.
Would Christopher Nolan still count today? He's been making movies for about 20 years, but it feels longer than that (for context Villeneuve has been making movies for the same amount of time). I feel like mainly it is the times that's choking out director's abilities to make the movie that they want to make and really stand out from the crowd, most likely because of the Disney model.

While I haven't been as sold on Jordan Peele as much as others, it has made me happy that he seems to be in a position to be able to get a modest budget on a film and then left to run free to make whatever he wants. I'm REALLY hoping for another collapse of the big budget movie market, so that films can return to a mid-budget experimental era again.

Oh yay, my daily reminder that Hollywood is stagnating and can't do anything other than look at stuff that worked before and remake them no matter how unnecessary.
I mean, I gave the Jungle Book and BatB a chance, but I just have no enthusiasm for these remakes.
Hollywood? Or we seem to be in generation of movie makers that does not have an original bone in their ideas?

Where's the next Speilberg, Cameron, De Palma, Ridley Scott, Kubrick, etc.?
Well, there's Paul Thomas Anderson and David Fincher.

Like everyone else is saying, I don't understand the *need* for this remake. The drab photorealistic CG world is a far cry from the oversaturated, vibrant colours of the original. No Jeremy Irons? Boo. No Rowan Atkinson? BOOOOO. Oh, but we have Childish Gambino and Beyonce, so it's more contemporary and authentic, or something.

I don't hate the idea of live action remakes. I watched Beauty and the Beast and was for the most part pleasantly surprised; I didn't think every change was for the better but it at least justified its existence by making those changes. In contrast the new Lion King seems to be striving for a painstakingly dull frame-for-frame copy of the original. MEH.

When you say 'original bone in their ideas' what do you mean? Jaws was a monster movie and those movies were popular at the time. He just made the best one. Indiana Jones is an updated Zorro. Cameron made movie about killer robots, half these guys movies are based off historical events or previous medis like old TV shows and books.

If your talking about how they craft a movie, then I'd agree. But original ideas? That's a no.

Also, look at what's happening now. Terminator 6/3. Indiana Jones 5. Another Predator movie, Gremlins 3, 20 Avatar movies, True Lies show. And another Gladiator movie. Whose asking for that? (I hate Gladiator, so I'm biased.) If these greats are squirting out movies like this, why would they newbies?

I prefer a Kingdom of Heaven sequel focusing on the Third Crusade proper with Richard the Lionheart and Saladin as the lead characters.

Although many here do not realize it, there is an actual demand for this. Some people will not watch cartoons. IDK WHY they won't watch cartoons, as I personally love cartoons, but they won't. The guy sleeping in my bed is one of these people. He will not watch cartoons no matter how great they are. He WILL however watch this. Finally I will be able to watch this with him instead of him running off to another room when I put " cartoons" on, so I for one, am looking forward to it.

Does Kingdom of Heaven even need a sequel?

Like, KoH's message is, pretty explicitly, "religion can drive people to do terrible things." Saladin himself acknowledges this that Jerusalem means both "nothing" and "everything," the latter coming from its shared religious significance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. A sequel might deliver the same message, or worse, undermine the message.

Like, I'm not saying you could never make a movie about the Third Crusade, but I think setting it up as a sequel to KoH 1 would be a mistake.

Also Ridley Scott needs to hurry up and make Alien: Awakening, so, um, there.

Well, gotta say, walking into a cinema as an adult that's filled with children watching a cartoon movie...not a pleasent experience. As in, even if the movie itself is quite good with mature themes, I tend to get funny looks. Watching a live-action Lion King might alleviate that.

Of course, Lion King in no way needs a remake in my eyes. None of the Disney live-action remakes technically "needed" remakes. Jungle Book at least did something new with its premise though, and I can't deny that I'm actually looking forward to Aladdin, but again, isn't needed.

the way you describe the bed guy as always in the one place every time makes me increasingly suspicious he could be chained, drugged and held there against his will. is he your prisoner?? if one were to check local police reports for missing dudes, would they find a matching description and a crying mother praying for his return? fess up, Lil devils...the truth will set you freeeee! Or more precisely...set him freeeee!

Well, he can run off to another room when she wants to watch cartoons, so it's probably ok. Unless there's some stockholm syndrome shenanigans going on.

Oh, right, this is a thread about a movie, and not about suspicions that some fellow users are super villains. Eh, yeah, movie looks kind of bland. Also, is it actually live-action when presumably none of the animals are real?

hey, chains come in all shapes and sizes. no doubt a liberal chain has been utilised to provide a semblance of freedom enough to help the Stockholm set in quicker. err...according to the acclaimed publication kidnappers weekly anyway

Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love would like to say hello.
All of which pale in comparison to There Will Be Blood.
Soooo?

Just because There Will Be Blood is P.T. Anderson's best movie doesn't mean the ones that came before are worthless. That's like saying Fargo and The Big Lebowsky suck, because of No Country for Old Men.

To which I also believe is true. Saw Big Lebowsky, thought it was meh and depressing.

There Will Be Blood is a satisfying type of depressing ending.

.....I really like that kickass remake of 'King of Pride Rock' in the trailer and I got a big genuine giggle at Timon and Pumba doing their 'lion sleeps tonight' bit.

I think the movie will be fine.
