What I do to find nice Metal is go onto youtube and find a song you like from a band you like, then in the suggestions click on the [Band name] mix and listen through the 40 songs (That will be by bands with a similar style) and after noting all the bands I like from those 40, I do the same again with those bands I found out until I get a list of music that will probably cost me upwards of £1000 to purchase.
The big four of thrash (megadeth, metallica, slayer, anthrax), Metal church is a good heavy/thrash band i would recomend their early stuff, testament is a great thrash band from the 80's i belive, motorhead is a NWOBHM and one of the original bands, of course iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Black Sabbath is the first metal band ever and they are great, Tvangeste is a good symphonic black metal band, and Cradle of Filth is a good black metal band.
My favourite kind of metal is Thrash Metal, then comes Heavy Metal, then Industrial and then Death.
Here are the bands I have on my PC and that I listen to regularly (there are also some Punk bands in there):
Acidez (Spanish Punk band, would recommend if you're into fast stuff)
Acrimony (Doom Metal band, fairly good)
Active (An another Punk band, didn't really like them)
Amebix (Really good Punk band)
Amon Amarth (I think that they're Melodic Death, also I really like them, very heavy stuff)
Anthrax (One of the big four of Thrash, my third favourite of them, but they're really good)
Anticimex (All I have to say about them is... Meh)
AntisecT (Crust Punk, not everyone's cup of tea, but I liked some of their songs)
Avskum (Rather good Punk band there)
Axegrinder (Another Crust Punk band, definitely better than Antisect)
Black Uniforms (A Punk band with a fast rhythm)
Blotted Science (Ah, finally a metal band. The thing that you need to know about this band is that it's entirely instrumental, but it's very good and I really recommend them)
Bombstrike (Huh... Punk again. But they also remind me of Metal so it's hard to group them, good by the way)
Conflict (Punk, liked them. Nothing else to say)
Crass (Really good, definitely recommend them)
Death (The pioneer of Death Metal, one of my favourite bands ever, they have my recommendation)
D.R.I (Crossover thrash, rather fast paced stuff)
Dodsdomd (I think that they can be classified as Black Metal, but I'm not sure, anyway I'll give them a Meh)
Electric Wizard (Stoner Metal, I really like them, they even have a song that goes for approx. 13 minutes)
Fear Factory (An Industrial Metal band, maybe my second favourite metal band of all time)
Icons of Filth (A Punk Rock band I think, liked them)
Iron Maiden (Do I really need to talk about them?)
Kreator (A Thrash Metal band, I can consider myself a fan of them)
Manowar (A Heavy Metal band, they have some very good songs and I'd rate them as slightly better than Iron Maiden)
Meshuggah (very good band, it's a shame that they're not better known)
Metallica (Again, do I really need to talk about them? Stay away from St.Anger and you'll be fine)
Monster Squad (They have longer than normal Punk songs, while retaining the speed of Punk, so they're pretty good)
Municipal Waste (An another Crossover Thrash band, they're very good)
Oi Polloi (An Anarcho-Punk band, they're up with Acidez and Clash as my favourite Punk bands ever)
Rammstein (Industrial Metal, my favourite band ever)
Slayer (My favourite band of the big four of Thrash)
Strapping Young Lad (This band has a little bit for everyone and I would definitely recommend them)
The Casualties (I only have one album by them, will get more from them and the Exploited by a friend of mine)
Also, an inquiry; Would you recommend Destruction and Sodom for me, since I like Kreator and Wikipedia says that they have a similar style.
It was as heavy as the fire beast, Ormagodden! And moved at the speed of his metal flesh! But it also had the grace of Atulia's song. It was called HEAVY METAL!!
I prefer symphonic metal, myself. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, and Kamelot are on the front lines of my metal repertoire. I also have a few Dragonforce songs, as well. If you haven't already checked out Dragonforce, look up Through the Fire and the Flames for a good taste of what they do. Soldiers of the Wastelands is my favorite from them, however.
I've heard Dragonforce be described as "hyper metal," and I think it's rather fitting.
I listen to pretty much every type of metal, mainly death though. Here is alist a great bands:
Light This City
Bless The Fallen- not Bless The Fall
Here Comes The Kraken
Nile
Amon Amarth
Edge of Sanity

No one ever says Chimaira on these threads! One of the heaviest bands I've ever heard with matching technical skill.
Also check out Scar Symmetry for melodic mastery mixed with death metal growls.
Don't know if anyone's said this already, but Children of Bodom is a must.
And pretty much anyone based in Norway.
Also, my band's coming out with a demo soon, so look for Daimon come new year.
Static X (classic.)
Bleeding Through (I LOVE Sister Charlatan)
Avatar (my brother-in-law is in love with them)
Dethklok (they're just funny)
Iced Earth
Kittie (Cut Throat is another great song)
Queensrÿche
Hammerfall
Symphony X
Skindred is also interesting, they're an English metal band, that also has like... a jamacian flavour I guess. (maybe its his accent?) Check out Roots Rock Riot by them.
Kreator (My favorite of all time band. Their early work is the most fast and loud stuff at the time. Nothing, literally nothing was as loud and fast as Kreator in the 80's. And i always say, kick Anthrax out of the big four and put Kreator in it. They made the first step towards death metal in their album Endless Pain. This albums vocals are insanely evil sounding. Their newer work is good too. But nothing can beat the endless pain!)
Sodom (Very good thrash metal band. Especially their early work. Most of their albums are about Vietnam. And they are very good.)
Death (This is one of the bands that started to make Death Metal. Hence it is called "Death Metal" since the band Death gave the genre a kick start)
Slayer (I fucking love Slayer. From their first album till even their later albums. Although they had a shitty period like most thrash bands had in the 90's. But still Spill the Blood, Disciple and Black Magic remain some of my favorite tracks today.)
Bloodbath (This band kicks ass. The lead singer is Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth. And well... They are just one kick ass death metal band. Although it is not like Opeth.)
Mastodon (It is a really good band. But i have to say one thing. I find Crack the Skye their worst album. It is not bad, but it isn't their best. Remission is still the best thing they have created. Technically, yes it is better but it is not as catchy.)
Megadeth (Groovy thrash, Jazzy i like a lot of their songs. Mustaine rules but Broderic is still one of my favorite guitarplayers.)
Judas Priest (They are truelly one of the most kickass heavy metalbands ever. THIS IS THE PAINKILLER!)
Gojira (Before i learned of them i hated the French. Let it be known. But this band kicks so much ass that they changed that hate.)
Nile (No band is as technical or as fast as Nile. Kollias is the best drummer in the world and you can say Mike Portnoy or Neil Pearth all you want but this guy is faster then all of them. Their Egyptian theme always comes back in their music. And it is the most brutal music ever created by a human being.)
Anyways I am sick of typing. So I'll see if I put the rest up later...
