Remember last month? there was an article about the New Zealand ISP Slingshot offering a VPN for its customers to bypass the much hated geo-locking of content on sites like Netflix and Hulu.

Well it turns out the nay-sayers are still wrong, as today I received this rather interesting email from my own ISP, Orcon.
It's certainly gone a long way from a monopoly that a US ISP would have salivated over, now the question is will the larger corps like Spark (formally known as Telecom) will follow suit.

Another New Zealand ISP is joining Slingshot in actively providing a way to access media normally unavailable through legal channels in a timely manner. Many of you have asked, and we are now stoked to announce, Global Mode has been turned on for all Orcon residential customers.
What?s Global Mode you say? Well it?s a neat feature we?ve brought in that is designed to unlock access to some of the most popular TV streaming websites in the world!
Why do we need to do this? Well some of these websites are normally not available to people living in NZ. On top, the number of options available to Kiwis in regards to streaming TV is very limited. We think this is unfair and want to give our customers a fair shot at enjoying the same content the rest of the world gets.
Last week we surveyed over 4,000 of you, and the results screamed at us to do something about getting more streaming into your home. Global mode will give you access to a much broader range of options when it comes to choosing your entertainment.
For example, Netflix is the most popular streaming service in the world with 50 million subscribers, yet Kiwis aren?t included. With Global Mode you can give it a go too.
Some quick Q&As
How do I enable Global Mode? We?ve already turned it on, so as long as you haven?t touched your modem?s DNS settings, you?re good to go ? find out more.
Will it affect my internet experience? Apart from giving you access to overseas sites that are normally blocked, it shouldn?t have any impact at all.
How do I disable Global Mode? There aren?t many reasons why you?d need to, but if you really want it off give us a call.
What can I do with Global Mode? You can access websites that are normally blocked to New Zealanders. For a start you can try Netflix.com, hulu.com, crackle.com or bbc.co.uk. Remember to read their terms of service; you?ll often need to have a USA address.
