I made a thread a while back asking guitar players who they thought was the greatest guitar player ever. Now I realize that there was no greatest guitarists in the world and there will never be one. So now I'm asking who you guys think is an overrated and underrated guitarist. Remember this is an opinion question. You're neither right or wrong.
I believe that if a guitarist is considered the Greatest guitarist in the world, then they are way overrated, but the most overrated guitarist of all, I think is Jimi Hendrix.

Yeah, same here
Agreed.
I personally beleive there is NO "Greatest" Guitar player, there is so much diversity in the way or style to play your guitar.

Care to elaborate? Especially seeing as Hendrix is often considered the best ever.
I think he's great but here's why many disagree.
1) He didn't really make woodstock go crazy, he was one of the last to perform, most had already left.
2) His death makes everyone see what he could have been, not what he was.
3) A huge amount of his music were covers from other artists.
I hope this helped.

Stanley Jordan is quite possibly the most underrated guitarist of all time. He invented finger-tapping, by the way.

Honestly, you can make the same thread a billion times under the same name, and people will always submit the same answer. Hendrix is often considered "the" best not because of his technical skill, because I bet my playing hand that there are a billio better guitarists in that sense. But as a rather clever analogy, The Ramones is considered one of the best bands ever, not due to their technical level (or the technical level they demonstrated, which frankly isn't too high), but due to the fact that they were liked by many, many, many people, and so was, is, and always will be our beloved Hendrix (mind you, I have barely heard anything by him). It all depends on the people, if a vast majority likes that artist, then he is probably gonna be considered the best. Why do you think so many people throw wars about Metallica and Megadeth? Because they make music that many people like, although bear in mind who has entered the hall of fame :p

Thank you.
Overrated, overrated!?!!?

The guy could play his guitar with his teeth and behind his back! How is that overrated?
It isn't hard to play backwords and I saw some guy play with his dick so teeth must not be so hard.

One of my buddies can do that. It's actually not that hard.
Quite true, think about it, your just replacing a pick with one of your canines. It not hard to do except guitar strings taste like crap.

Yeah, many people think it was Van Halen, but of course this guy didn't have so much of an impact. And I agree, the fact that Hendrix could pull that sort of thing off, is in short amazing, but it's still their opinion.

Possibly.
Stanley Jordan is probably better, though. AND he invented a whole different technique and style.

Nope. He ripped it off from Stanley.

Hmmm... my forte is more classical music, but the three songs of Hendrix which stand out in my mind would be 'All along the watchtower', 'Voodoo child' and 'Machine Gun', all of which contain insane guitar which I have trouble finding a song to match. Even Jimmy Paige going nuts during the stairway to heaven solo doesn't match it, especially watchtower and Machine Gun. I didn't even know a guitar could do that until I heard them...
