I've been recently looking into reading a bit more, and until the next ASOIF book comes out, I'm coming up dry on good sci fi or fantasy to read. I like these two genres because fantasy has the fantastical and sci fi is always allowed to defy your expectations.

I tend to dislike predictable stories that seem to follow a formula. You know those authors, they use the same old archetypes in every book and just plug them into different situations or occasionally as different roles within the story. Everything folds out in the usual manner and the good guy always wins in the end and rescues the girl.

Well I'm sorry but all I have is the obligatory Brave New World by Alduis Huxley, but you've probably heard of it already. If you haven't it was written in the early 1930's. It's a dystopian future lead by genetics and the application of scientific method. Shouldn't be too hard to come across, most libraries around my area have a copy, well the three I've been to since reading it do anyways.

I've always been more interested in reading books on philosophy or biographies though, hopefully you get a more of an experienced answer.

The Night's Dawn Trilogy -Peter F. Hamilton:
Ghosts coming back from the dead, space weirdness, aliens, live/death, and some even MORE messed up and weird stuff.

I, Jedi - Michael A. Stackpole:
One of the best Star Wars novels out there, great character drama.
