if you recall i made a small thread about my deck and if it was any decent. but one of my most recent game made me question one of the "rules".

according to this guy i played you can block instants or sorceries that do damage to the target player or creature with another creature. for example he blocked my lighting bolt with his 5/6 spider when i wanted to hit him directly. IS that allowed or was he blowing smoke out his ass? i really hope its the latter cause most of my cards deal damage through instants or sorceries

Smoke out of his ass. You can't block spells without a counterspell. You can only block attacks.

Smoke out his ass. You assign the target for a lightning bolt, it can't be redirected unless a card specifically allows it. He assigns blockers for combat.

well his explanation was that the card has to target the player directly and that in the explanation of the card if it said target creature or player he could block it.

It is hard for me to give a concrete and brief answer because for just about any scenario you can conceive, there is probably a card that does any given ability. But for a scenario where you play lightning bolt and target the player, he cannot just switch the target to a runeclaw bear on his board. There are instants out there that will allow it, but if he is the target, then he takes the damage. A player only assigns blockers when being attacked by a creature.

This has already been answered well but I am curious as to where he got this idea from? Please share with us when you find out.
