Splinter Cell Conviction is really great as an action game, but as a Splinter Cell game its meh.
Gameplay: Sam Fisher feels like a complete badass now. Shooting feels really tight and intuitive. The "Mark and Execute" feature which yes is a ,little bit cheap, is awesome. But there is a tactical advantage to the "Mark and Execute" feature. Example: I had a "Mark and Execute" ready to go so I marked 4 enemies with still 4 enemies still up ahead so I threw a grenade to the 4 enemies farther ahead and when the grenade went off killing all 4, i executed the remaining 4 enemies and when I did this I felt a feeling of badassness that I haven't felt in a action game in awhile. People say that Conviction felt less like or even didn't even feel like a Splinter Cell game and was more an action game than anything. I do agree but the more action route made sense. Sam wasn't bound by the restrictions of Third Echelon so he basically decided that he had the fifth freedom all the time. What I really liked about Conviction was that it was more like the Predator-type gameplay like in Batman Arkham Asylum, it wasn't "How do I sneak past these guys," it was more "When do pop out of the shadows at the right moment and strike?" The only problem with this is that the game isn't that difficult, even if you screw it up you can fix you mistake with a assault rifle. First time going through on normal took about 6 hours and then going back on the hardest difficulty it took about 3 hours. The game was short and easy, unlike the past Splinter Cells which could be unforgiving. CO-OP and multiplayer were a good addition but multiplayer is limited to 2 players which sucks but its still fun.
Story: The story involves Sam investigating hints about his daughter's death which leads him back to the Agency he walked away from after the events of Double Agent. The story is engaging enough to get you through the game and it is well written but still feels familiar with conspiracy theorists/thriller people.
Controls: Well.....Splinter Cell games have always had great tight controls and this one is no different. There is only one problem and that involves the climbing onto stuff which is a little bit stiff but its a tiny nit pick in a solid game.
Graphics: Its a next gen game, of course its going to look pretty. The problem is that the character's mouths do not match with the dialogue at all. Yeah that's about the only complaint.
Verdict: If you are a fan of the series and will mind the more action approach this game will satisfy you, but for everyone else this is probably a rental or at least wait until it drops in price because its is a good experience.
