He was expected to be Muslim. <- Correct.

It was expected to be Islamic. <- Correct.


The first thing people jump at is: "He is Islamic Muslim!" This isn't the first time a soldier snapped and killed people. When it happens at other times, nobody says "A Christian/Jew attacked an army base!". They say "A man with a mental condition." Now? This, kids, is called racism.

And let it be clear, I condemn what he did, I don't advocate murder.
