I have spent a fair few hours of my life paying one video game or the other, Recently I stumbled upon Rust, through Youtube game play and thought to give it a go, and found that maybe the game play has been ever so slightly candy coated for the viewers pleasure.

I come away from my experience with mixed feelings, this game all be it is still in Alpha stage so is very much a work in progress, and is Graphically very Beautiful especially compared with other Early Access Games, as well as being slightly more reasonably priced to say 7Days to Die, and is engrossing and enjoyable to play with, especially if you have a group of friends to play it with, but has still opened its doors to a very large player base, Youtube and other video channels helps towards this I am sure, so I will be treating this as a finished product, one that they have seen fit for market or send to the slaughter house.

Rust for those who do not know already is a Survival game, starting naked as the day you were born with nothing but a large rock which sole purpose is to bash trees, other larger rocks and inevitably any other player or animal you think you have a chance of taking on, along with 2 med packs to stop bleeding and a torch with limited burn time.

gathering resources such as lumber allows you to build shelters, small huts that last for around 12 hours and the all powerful stone axe, which you may feel a god send after spending long tedious hours hitting trees with a rock to collect enough lumber to build a shelter (50 wood each tree holds 5-7, it is also without a door that is another 30 wood), as it speeds the process up immensely, surviving long enough allows you to build up a resource base enabling you to build bigger and longer lasting things, from a more fancy shelter to guns to help fend off those pesky naked men with rocks, but other people are all striving for the same goal and have even reached there before you, so don't go relaxing just yet, they might have ways of blowing you house down quite literally.

after playing Rust for a while I realised that many of the players like nothing more to cave your head in for your rock, or the remote off chance that that other naked guy running away has some cloth, one way round this is to play with friends building a virtual little community of your own while some hold down the fort, others run off collecting wood, stone and other resources to keep your primitive utopia going.

This Communal Antisocial Socialising isn't without its difficulties, let's start with the first problem you may encounter which is you all spawn in different locations, way round this is to find the main and only road round this island of social disorder, getting some to wait buy the roadside as others make their way round in a frenzy of naked , rock wielding madness hoping that their friends are not picked off for this rare and elusive rock....
the next small but significant challenge you will encounter, is there is no map of any kind this all relies on your memory to remember if you passed that rock or tree before, luckily there are more notable features to help guide you, but if you are in a small group of say 2 or 3 giving descriptions of where your hut is wont help as much as you think.
Next comes the problem of sleep, "sleep" is achieved by logging out, a sure fire way of keeping your stuff and staying safe in a time of need right?

Sorry Bugsy no luck this time, your avatar, character call it what you will just lays down with all your stuff for a nap and has no way of defending themselves, somewhat realistic if you have a community of narcoleptic deep sleepers.

So you dedicate yourself and the others you are paying with to build the best damn village you can, you overcome your nakedness with clothes and fire, you fend off the other naked men who want your rocks, now comes the issue that many won't be able to live with, Rust has Provided many servers for you to play on, in the UK and out of the UK along with many community servers as well, however many of the Community servers require a subscription to play on costing more, setting one up yourself is costly and time consuming to maintain and run.

Rust provides free ones, free ones unfortunately rife with "Hackers" or exploiters whose only goal is to ruin your day, who will fly round and kill you in your homes to get at your rocks and other resources and with these servers being open community servers no admin monitors them relying on the community and those effected to report them via steam, unfortunately many of these names do not appear in game above the character like most, be it through a exploit or because the name in question contains characters that cannot be displayed, makes reporting of these individuals near impossible.

That all said and many will feel I have come down harsh and unforgiving on this game, highlighting the worst this game has to offer or casting a derogatory eye on it, it is a game I enjoyed and engrossing and feel has the potential if done properly be a great survival game, and is well worth a risk of paying for.
