I think almost everything I've tried smells and tastes like rubbing alcohol. Maybe I've just been exposed to all the wrong ones. Any recommendations?

In my experience? No. If I'm drinking to get drunk, the cheap beer tastes good after the 4th one. If I'm actually enjoying myself, I'm spending a little more to get labels that don't make me wrinkle my nose. I can't tolerate cheap hard liquor anymore however...

That depends on what you consider "cheap."

To me Buffalo Trace is quite cheap at about $20-$25, but to others that might be considered mid-range, or even expensive on their budget.

Generally with liquor though you get what you pay for. Most of the time stuff that's under about $30 is not great.

I have fallen in love with 'stone IPA' myself, the stuff is rocket fuel!

depends what you are after I guess, what is your taste? sweet? bitter?

Sweet, I suppose.
That is the thing with alcohol it is generally bitter.

cider is kind of sweet though.

Well, if you like wine, Red and White Moscatto is usually a good, inexpensive way to get yourself going. It's a sweet dessert wine and I've paid as little as $5 a bottle, and it's surprisingly nice tasting.

Red wine or Rose wines can be quite decent and cheap, if you have a sweet tooth. Ditto sherry.

The real cheapo's drink for me though will always be a combination of budget scotch and some sort of carbonated drink, like Coke or Sprite.

Well here in SA the main student drink is something called Cane (basically a very very very cheap white rum or maybe white rum by-product) which is around R100 (~$9) for a 1L bottle which contains 40-43% alcohol. I just normally mix it with Cream Soda or another soft drink and bam you good to get wasted.

In my experience as a long time drinker it is all down to taste and experience. You have no choice but to experiment and try as many different grogs as you can, you will find something tolerable eventually. But in general every cheap alcohol will get you wasted with a terrible taste in your mouth

Vodka mixed with Grapefruit Soda or Ginger Ale/Ginger Soda.

Cheap, tasty and very low alcohol taste if you mix them weak.

And you should - Getting dead drunk on Vodka is NOT nice. Did that once. Poured my own drinks and did not know my own limits and was sitting down while was drinking (Much harder to tell how drunk you are) - Bad idea. Only time in my life I've gotten memory blackouts.

Basically, just pour yourself a glass of vodka, mix it about 5%-10% vodka (Very weak, but I am a lightweight) and the rest soda and you have a good sipping drink that won't taste all alcohol.

In a bar though I wouldn't know what is or isn't cheap. Few times I've been drinking in a bar I got a Smirnoff Ice (Which is really just vodka with lemon) or a Bacardi Breezer (Fruits and berries that are sour in taste tend to cover the alcohol taste best, but it's a matter of taste really). Those are not cheap, but they taste good.

Another good drunk tip - Don't go to sleep right away once you get back home after drinking. Try to wait until you've sobered up a little and make sure to drink a lot of water. Your hangover will be less severe if you do this. Dehydration is a very large contributor to the pain of a hangover.

Stay off teh Vodka

One suggestion is mixing, try getting a glass and fill it 1/2 with weak beer like budwiser and the rest with coke, lemonade, whatever softdrink you like....Or you could try Shandy.

Well anything with alcohol in it will inevitably smell like alcohol, so the best way to get away with it cheap is buying a generic tasteless spirits brand and then mix with whatever your favourite beverage is (I found sweet fruity stuff to work best). Not only cheap but you can always adjust the taste/alcohol content.

Another thing to consider also is that you won't taste shit after a glass or two(or rather won't care), so getting a little of the good stuff for starters is a very sensible option.

This is very much true. This is the only way I can get a few beers in me. Why drink beer when I don't like it? It's cheap and I just want to keep the comfy inebriated buzz going.

Though I've heard people say that you get a worse hangover if you mix drinks (As in drink beer, wine, rum, vodka), but I don't really understand how that would work. I can understand people having a worse hangover if they drink a large quantity of different things though.

Ive found in my own experience that certain drinks give me worse hangovers. Downing 8 or so Boags Red Beers gives me a monster of a headache the next day. While whisky drinking feels almost like I didnt do anything but miss sleep.

If you like sweet, you'd probably like Malibu (though I think it's almost too sweet). It's quite cheap and it's pretty good to mix with. Whatever you do, try to put some lemon juice in with whatever you're mixing it with. It'll cut the sweetness quite a bit and turn it into something that tastes quite refreshing.

You'd probably also like Schnapps since it's quite sweet. I'm partial to the root beer flavour.

Finally, there's the classic rum and coke. I would recommend using the Kraken Black Spiced Rum. It's more expensive than some of the cheaper rums, but not by much and it tastes a lot better.

I personally don't really like beer, at all. I would recommend giving apple ales a shot. Redd's and Angry Orchard are both pretty good. If you want something more in the line of mixed drinks, give Kahlua, an Irish Cream, and milk a shot. Also if you ever find yourself drinking in Japan, order a Cassis Orange. Most places will serve it and its usually pretty mild in terms of alcohol taste.

1795 Dark.

It's a Czech lager beer with a dark tone, and a sweet'ish taste.

It's really good, and actually fairly cheap compared to what you actually get.
