I was recently picking my way through oblivion dark brotherhood missions when I came across my favorite one. The Clue mystery game mission. (I don't remember the exactly name of it.)

Pretty much the mission boils down to you and a group of people in a house and one by one. (doing this the right way mind you) you pick off the people in the house in secret, all of whom were all lured here like sheep to be executed by you. While it's sort of simplistic in execution the evil mastermind part of me liked the idea of working through the house fooling them like a real horror movie villain into falling for every old trope while picking them off till it was just you... and the terrified face of the last victim as he does the math in his head.

I was just curious if anyone else knew of any other games that had this as a premise or even just a level or so as a premise.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be just a giant game of murder mystery either. Sure you could work this into a thief esc burglary game as well. I'de even settle for playing the "good guy" in it and having to run the investigation team without falling for traps and fake outs by the killer before a time limit runs out (say your trapped at sea on a cruise ship, or locked overnight in a house or building for some reason where the killer escapes into the world when your free.) or he picks you and everyone else off.

If it hasn't been done already I think it could be an interesting game idea if you tried to work into a sort of deeper npc mechanics. Doing things like setting up frame ups on other characters while some start investigating who killed the first and start searching for the "missing" characters. (or players if you wanted to make this a multiplayer thing.) it could be a fun deeper planning and executing big of gameplay. Like getting that perfect silent thief run or silent assassin mission on Hitman.

The closest to this type of game set up i've played is the Mafia custom game on Starcraft 2. Less gameplay and more lieing and deceit via chat boxes.. but something that sort of feel to it would lend well to the sort of gameplay..

Anyway.. got of topic a bit... if anyone happens to know if any games like this exist please share. ^_^

Play the Batman games. There are rooms where you have to take thugs out one after another. You can lay traps and start silent. If they get suspicous they`ll get nervous and carefull. It`s fun to see them going from calm to total panic after each takedown.

Hitman- You`re the hitman and kill people(the piano wire from behind is a classic). You can also disguise yourself with the victims clothes. I only played 1 and 2 but i`m pretty sure you can make it look like accidents in the later games. What you described sounds alot like Hitman.

Thief is by far the best game that ever used stealth. Batman is more action orientated but you get segments of stealth in it.

Theif you must not kill the enemy or at least in a quiet area as blood stains will be left and you must drag the bodies into the darkness and shadow. Its a true stealth game even to the point of loud sounds on metal surfaces to alert guards and using water arrows to douse lights.

The only other game I can suggest is Splinter Cell or Assasins creed both are reasonably good but I never found them to be quite the same as theif.

There is a puzzle game also called "the Orient Express" a point and click where you solve murder mysteries. Similar story structure but you will miss out on mechanics and be replaced by much more interesting problem solving and detective work.

Try out The Thing map for Starcraft. very similar. You could also try The Hidden: Source mod for Half Life 2, or the infestation mode in AVP 2010, or the one multiplayer mode in Condemned where one man is a serial killer.

Thief, Splinter Cell and Commandos series all go very close to that sort of thing.
Also Hitman but that game will frown upon your incompetence if you kill many people.
