I mean this as in computer ones I have played and enjoyed a range of RL ones most notably of course magic. Im really looking for one in comp form given that I rarely get chance to play in RL anymore.

Now I would really prefer a full game i.e something like the old microprose magic the gathering game and its expansions something where I can make whatever deck I want and dont have to worry about having to get the cards first so basically a set price and thats the game. Does anything like this even exist now?

I tried Hearthstone ofc but strongly dislike the business model and the game does not allow enough variables and interesting interactions to offer long term appeal for me. I would have enjoyed it more if I could make the decks I want to make but I still dont think it offers enough in terms of gameplay. It just felt like a 80% magic clone with great presentation and much less intricate and interesting gameplay.

I also recently tried Hex but that is still in development and again the business model rubbed me the wrong way. I liked the gameplay enough but it felt even more like magic than Hearthstone so much so that I was thinking why dont I play magic instead?

I know there is a lot out there but most seem to offer a freemium service as these games can easily change their RL models into digital through immitation but thing is even when I played in RL I rarely bought cards we just used proxies as I loved making decks and trying stuff out so did not want to be hampered by what I dont own or waste loads of money on an idea for a deck I made just for fun.

Ideally I am looking for a full game one that does not have microtransactions but I suppose modular would be ok i.e more expansion based. It would also need to have a fair amount of depth. It does not have to play like magic any kind of card game would be fine original or not.

Also feel free to list other non TCG/CCGs you think are good i.e ones with a set deck or ones with modular expansion etc.

What you're looking for seems to be just using Cockatrice and XMage to play CCGs online in a virtual tabletop setting, yes?

Cockatrice even has server-based play, and you can use MTG decks and rules.

I haven't really found anything that 'fits the bill' either. I tried infinity wars and ederon, but neither of them really 'worked' for me. Infinity wars was at least positional, though.

You might like Might & Magic: Duel of Champions, but it has a similar business model to the other problematic ones that you mentioned.

Always meant to try Legends of Norrath, but never got around to it.

I feel like I should mention that Pokemon / Yu-Gi-Oh do have digital versions that one can play.

Also, Card Hunter is worth looking up.

Thanks for the suggestions Cockatrice and Xmage may indeed be more of what I am looking for so I will take a look at them.

I have never played Yu-Gi-Oh at all as it has never really appealed to me but it may be worth a shot. I played Pokemon CCG back in the day it was fun for a while but again lacked depth imo.

I will try Legends of Norrath see what that is like. I also tried Card Hunter long ago and it was great for a while but then it felt like it lost its way a bit.

Guess the problem is a lot of these games just end up with me working at them so I can play to enjoy myself. Which I do not like as I can play many other games and just enjoy them likewise if I am going to work I have to feel like I am getting something out of it and I have never found a freemium game that has a good work to gain ratio yet.

I suppose I could always go back and complete Baten kaitos on gamecube or Lost Kingdom 1 and 2 (never played them). There was also that phantasy star card one which I never finished and probably did not give a fair go at.

There is also one for PS3 with camera and PSP judgement or something but I found that extremely shallow and not very enjoyable.

While it doesn't entirely fit what you're asking for I'd highly recommend Card Hunter. You'll not get a full playset of cards without ridiculous grinding but it has an excellent single player mode that makes working with the cards you have really interesting. It has some annoying free to play mechanics but you can still play the entire main campaign for nothing and then see if you want to buy the expansions separately. You still won't have all the cards but it's an amazing ccg/rpg that works brilliantly that way.

Multiplayer will be a pain though and it does try to sell you on extras pretty hard.
