OK, I wouldn't call myself one but I know friends that spend hundreds every month on retro gaming; build their own arcade cabinets, own every obscure gaming device they can find on ebay (a friend just picked up a PC Engine for about £30) and have retro gamer magazine on subscription. Most are characterised by being serious anti-emulation and are on the religious belief that 16bit or less 'owns' any of the latest systems.

Anyone here a hardcore retrogamer?

ENTRY LEVEL TEST: Do you know what a Neo Geo is?

Sort of. I'm a retro gamer, but then I replay every game I own multiple times, as long as I liked it the first time.

As for hardcore... Maybe from some people's viewpoints, but from a hardcore gamers perspective I'm not a hardcore gamer.

I know what a Neo Geo is. But I wouldn't say I'm hardcore... I just like to dabble.

I'm a big fan of older consoles but I don't think I'd go past the NES, I like the adventure games and I'm not so much into the arcady ones.

Sega Genesis+Sega CD, Saturn, PSOne, SNES, NES, Gamegear, Gameboy, NeoGeo Pocket Color etc etc. I love Neo Geo but I don't have the notes for that kinda deal.

Edit: I forgot the older games I have on PC, Sam and Max anyone? How about some Tie Fighter?

I loved that game so much when i was young... Sweet childhood memories..
That and Rebel Assault 1 and 2 (which were all bundled together.) were the days.
While i had finished with all my games on the Mega Drive.

Isnt hardcore retro gamer oxymoronic. I dont think that retro games had the capabitliy to create diversity in game play to draw such a distinct like that would allow a clear casual and hardcore fanbase. I mean the first super mario brothers can be argued as both casual and hardcore.
I guess it could be defined by how I listed it above. I've seen hobbiests who make their own arcade cabinets, or go out of their way to achieve a perfect collection for an old system.

Anyone who thinks that retro gamers can't be hardcore needs to go watch "The King of Kong." If anything, they're MORE hardcore then modern gamers.

I'm a retro gamer, but not really hardcore. I'm more of an NES/SNES nut.

I don't think the Neo Geo was ever actually released it Aus.
At least, not the home port...
Earliest console I own is the Commodore 64, which my father played when he was a kid and I dug up a few years back at my grandparents place.
My first console was a NES, though.

I'm not hardcore but I've probably played half the games in the neo geo library.

to be a hardcore teenage hardcore retro gamer is pretty hard because it's not like it's nostalgia driving you.
i'm nineteen and the earliest platform i can remember was the NES, and i think that was during the end of it's era.

if any one has watched AVGN where he reviews the godzilla franchise on the NES and SNES and then compares it to the ps2 and xbox versions, i think it would be something like that - i don't think one could grow up in a glittery graphics saturated world and then move back to 16bit.

a step backwards. i played super mario 3 on an emulator for a bit during year twelve exams, and that got pretty tiring pretty quickly.

Tie Fighter rules, I recently got it working on Vista, fantastic game. Rebel Assault I wasn't as fond of but it was awesome.

Rebel assault 2's greatest feature that i adored was its 'create your own difficulty' setting.
You could adjuect the frequency, damage, fire rate, accuracy etc of your enemies. It was interesting having a ton of stormtroopers with shit accuracy and moderate damage fire at you with a berserk fire rate.
Kinda makes me wish that this could occur on games. (As a core package, not an extra.)
I loved Tie fighter... but i lost my disk movie house. When this season is over, i will probably find it again.
